Impact of Accounting Knowledge Assessment on Students’ Mastery of Financial Reporting Concepts in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the impact of accounting knowledge assessment on students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting knowledge assessment refers to the systematic process of evaluating students’ understanding, recall, interpretation and application of accounting knowledge through tests, examinations, assignments, quizzes, class exercises, practical tasks and other assessment activities. Assessment plays an important role in accounting education because it provides opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learned while also helping lecturers identify areas of strength, weakness and misunderstanding. Financial Reporting is a major component of accounting education that requires students to acquire and retain a broad range of concepts relating to the recognition, measurement, presentation and disclosure of financial information. Effective assessment of accounting knowledge may therefore encourage students to engage more actively with Financial Reporting concepts and strengthen their mastery of the subject. This study investigated whether accounting knowledge assessment has a significant impact on students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. The study was motivated by the importance of effective assessment in determining and improving students’ conceptual understanding of Financial Reporting. Students may possess basic accounting knowledge but experience difficulties when required to explain concepts, interpret financial information or apply reporting principles to practical situations. Where assessment is limited to memorization or focuses predominantly on the reproduction of previously taught material, students may have fewer opportunities to develop deeper conceptual understanding. Appropriate accounting knowledge assessment can require students to recall information, explain accounting principles, analyze financial information, solve practical problems and apply Financial Reporting concepts to unfamiliar situations. Such assessment activities may reinforce learning and provide students with continuous opportunities to demonstrate and improve their knowledge. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students offering Financial Reporting and related courses in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on accounting knowledge assessment and students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts. The accounting knowledge assessment component focused on the frequency, relevance, coverage, clarity, variety and practical orientation of assessment activities. Attention was given to tests, quizzes, assignments, examinations, class exercises, practical accounting questions and other forms of knowledge assessment. Students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts was considered in relation to their ability to recall, explain, distinguish, interpret and apply Financial Reporting principles and concepts. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether accounting knowledge assessment has a statistically significant impact on students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts. The study is expected to establish that accounting knowledge assessment has a significant impact on students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts. Regular and well-designed assessment may encourage students to review accounting materials consistently and retrieve previously learned information. Continuous engagement with assessment tasks can help students identify concepts they understand and areas where further learning is required. Assessment can therefore serve not only as a means of measuring achievement but also as an instructional strategy that supports knowledge development and retention. Frequent assessment may be particularly useful in Financial Reporting because the subject contains numerous interconnected concepts. Students need to understand foundational principles before progressing to more advanced reporting issues. Regular quizzes and class exercises can help students revisit previously learned concepts and reinforce their understanding before they encounter more complex topics. This may reduce knowledge gaps and provide lecturers with opportunities to address misconceptions at an early stage. The quality of assessment questions is also important. Financial Reporting assessment should not focus exclusively on questions requiring students to recall definitions or reproduce accounting procedures. Students should also be required to explain concepts, interpret financial information, distinguish between accounting treatments, analyze practical situations and justify their answers. Such assessment approaches can provide stronger opportunities for students to demonstrate genuine conceptual mastery. Assessment can also provide useful feedback. When students receive timely and constructive feedback on their performance, they can identify errors and understand areas that require further attention. Feedback can help students correct misconceptions, improve their accounting procedures and develop more effective study strategies. Lecturers can also use assessment results to identify topics that require additional classroom explanation or practical exercises. The study further recognizes the importance of assessment coverage. Financial Reporting encompasses several areas of accounting knowledge, and assessment should adequately represent the major concepts included in the course. When important areas are consistently excluded from assessment, students may devote less attention to those areas. Comprehensive assessment coverage can encourage students to engage with the broader range of Financial Reporting concepts included in their course content. The findings of the study will be useful to accounting students because they may increase awareness of the role of assessment in strengthening learning. Students can use tests, quizzes, assignments and practice questions as opportunities to identify weaknesses and reinforce their understanding. Instead of viewing assessment solely as a means of obtaining grades, students can use assessment activities as tools for self-evaluation and continuous improvement. The findings will also be beneficial to Financial Reporting lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics. The study may provide lecturers with information about the importance of assessment in developing students’ conceptual mastery. Lecturers can design assessment activities that correspond with learning objectives and provide opportunities for students to demonstrate different levels of understanding. Questions can range from basic conceptual recall to interpretation, application and analysis. Classroom assessment can also be used to monitor students’ understanding throughout a course. Short quizzes and practical exercises can provide immediate information about whether students understand a newly introduced concept. Where many students demonstrate difficulty with a particular topic, lecturers can revisit the concept, provide additional examples and introduce alternative explanations before progressing to more advanced material. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and heads of accounting departments. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening assessment practices within accounting education programmes. Assessment policies should encourage a balance between formative and summative assessment and should provide students with sufficient opportunities to practice and demonstrate their knowledge throughout the learning process. Practical assessment is particularly relevant to Financial Reporting education. Students can be presented with financial reporting scenarios, extracts from financial statements, accounting transactions and reporting problems requiring them to apply relevant concepts. Such activities can help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical accounting application. The study also highlights the importance of aligning assessment with course objectives. If the objective of Financial Reporting education is to develop conceptual understanding and practical competence, assessment should measure these abilities directly. Students should be assessed on their ability to understand and apply accounting concepts rather than relying predominantly on memorization of accounting definitions and procedures. Technology can provide additional opportunities for accounting knowledge assessment. Computer-based tests, online quizzes, electronic question banks and digital learning platforms can enable students to undertake frequent assessment activities. Immediate feedback can help students identify areas requiring further study. Digital assessment can also provide lecturers with information that can be used to monitor students’ progress over time. The study may also have implications for students’ long-term retention of Financial Reporting knowledge. Repeated assessment requires students to retrieve previously learned information, and this repeated retrieval can strengthen memory and make knowledge more accessible. Cumulative assessments that include material from earlier topics can be particularly useful because they encourage students to revisit concepts rather than forgetting them after completing a particular unit. Assessment can also promote students’ analytical and problem-solving abilities. Financial Reporting requires students to apply accounting principles to different situations rather than simply reproduce memorized information. Questions involving interpretation, comparison, evaluation and application can encourage students to develop higher-order thinking skills that are relevant to both academic and professional accounting practice. The study further recognizes the importance of fairness and clarity in assessment. Assessment questions should be clearly worded and should correspond with the concepts taught in the course. Ambiguous or poorly structured questions may measure students’ ability to interpret confusing questions rather than their actual Financial Reporting knowledge. Clear assessment instructions can therefore improve the validity of the learning process. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen accounting knowledge assessment within Financial Reporting courses. Lecturers should provide regular assessment opportunities through quizzes, tests, assignments, class exercises and practical accounting tasks. Assessment should be distributed throughout the semester rather than concentrated exclusively at the end of the course. The study further recommends that Financial Reporting assessment should include a variety of question types. Students should be required to define and explain concepts, solve accounting problems, interpret financial information, analyze reporting situations and justify accounting treatments. This can provide a more comprehensive assessment of students’ Financial Reporting mastery. Lecturers should also provide timely and constructive feedback after assessments. Students should be informed not only of whether their answers are correct but also why particular answers are incorrect and what principles should have been applied. This can transform assessment into an opportunity for further learning and conceptual development. Accounting departments should encourage assessment practices that integrate theory and practical application. Students should be exposed to realistic financial reporting cases and financial statements that require them to apply concepts to practical situations. Such activities can strengthen their ability to transfer classroom knowledge to unfamiliar accounting problems. Students should also be encouraged to use assessment activities as part of their personal learning strategies. They can practice with past questions, create self-tests, participate actively in class exercises and review feedback from previous assessments. Regular practice can improve knowledge retention and increase confidence in Financial Reporting. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting knowledge assessment in developing students’ mastery of Financial Reporting concepts in Nigerian polytechnics. Effective assessment provides opportunities for students to retrieve, apply and reinforce accounting knowledge while enabling lecturers to identify learning difficulties and provide timely support. Regular, comprehensive, practical and well-structured assessment can strengthen conceptual understanding, knowledge retention, analytical ability and application of Financial Reporting principles. Improving accounting knowledge assessment practices can therefore contribute to stronger academic outcomes and better preparation for advanced accounting studies and professional accounting responsibilities among students in Nigerian polytechnics.
