Impact of Accounting Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Explain Financial Transactions in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the impact of accounting knowledge on students’ ability to explain financial transactions in Nigeria. Accounting knowledge refers to students’ understanding of accounting concepts, principles, rules, procedures and practices required to recognize, record and interpret financial transactions. The ability to explain financial transactions involves students’ capacity to describe the nature of a transaction, identify the accounts affected, explain the accounting treatment involved and provide logical reasons for the resulting entries or financial effects. This ability is important in accounting education because students are expected not only to calculate or record financial transactions but also to demonstrate an understanding of why particular accounting treatments are appropriate. The study was motivated by the observation that some accounting students may be able to prepare journal entries and perform accounting calculations without being able to clearly explain the underlying financial transactions. Adequate accounting knowledge may therefore provide students with the conceptual foundation required to interpret transactions and communicate their accounting implications effectively. The study consequently investigated whether accounting knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to explain financial transactions in Nigeria. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ accounting knowledge and their ability to explain financial transactions. Accounting knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of accounting principles, accounting concepts, double-entry procedures, classification of accounts, recognition of financial events and the relationship between accounting elements. Students’ ability to explain financial transactions was considered in terms of their capacity to identify the parties and accounts involved, describe the nature of transactions, explain debit and credit implications, determine the effects of transactions on financial statements and provide logical explanations for accounting treatments. The instrument was subjected to appropriate validation by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to explain financial transactions. Students with stronger accounting knowledge may be better equipped to identify the accounting concepts and principles underlying different transactions and explain their financial effects accurately. Understanding the relationship between assets, liabilities, equity, income and expenses can enable students to determine how individual transactions affect the financial position and performance of a business. Knowledge of double-entry principles may also help students explain why particular accounts are debited or credited rather than simply memorizing debit and credit rules. Furthermore, adequate accounting knowledge can help students distinguish between different types of transactions, recognize their effects on accounting records and communicate the reasons for particular accounting treatments. Regular opportunities to discuss and explain financial transactions may therefore help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with practical accounting application. The findings of the study will be useful to accounting students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigeria. Students may benefit from developing both theoretical accounting knowledge and the ability to communicate the reasoning behind accounting treatments. Lecturers can use practical transactions, classroom discussions, case studies, journal-entry exercises and financial statement examples to require students to explain not only what accounting entry should be made but also why it should be made. Accounting departments can strengthen instructional activities that connect accounting concepts with realistic financial transactions and encourage students to express their reasoning in written and oral forms. The study recommends that lecturers should provide regular explanation-based accounting exercises, use practical transaction scenarios and provide constructive feedback on students’ explanations. Students should also be encouraged to study the principles underlying accounting procedures rather than relying entirely on memorization. In conclusion, strong accounting knowledge can improve students’ ability to understand, interpret and explain financial transactions, thereby contributing to deeper conceptual understanding, stronger accounting communication skills, improved problem-solving ability and better academic and professional preparedness among accounting students in Nigeria.
