Impact of Accounting Knowledge Retention on Students’ Performance in Advanced Accounting Courses in Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined the impact of accounting knowledge retention on students’ performance in advanced accounting courses in Nigeria. Accounting education is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to understand and apply accounting principles across different academic and professional situations. However, the effectiveness of accounting education does not depend only on students’ ability to acquire knowledge during classroom instruction but also on their ability to retain and retrieve such knowledge when it is required. Accounting knowledge retention refers to the ability of students to preserve previously acquired accounting concepts, principles, procedures and techniques in memory and recall or apply them appropriately over time. This ability is particularly important in advanced accounting courses because such courses build extensively on knowledge acquired from introductory and intermediate accounting subjects. Students are often required to recall previously learned accounting principles before they can understand more complex areas such as advanced financial accounting, consolidation of financial statements, partnership accounting, company accounting, accounting for business combinations and other specialized accounting topics. Where previously acquired knowledge is poorly retained, students may experience difficulties in understanding new concepts, solving complex accounting problems and applying appropriate accounting procedures. This study therefore examined whether accounting knowledge retention has a significant impact on students’ performance in advanced accounting courses in Nigeria. The study was motivated by concerns about students’ difficulties in progressing from basic accounting concepts to more advanced areas of accounting. Although students may perform satisfactorily immediately after receiving instruction, their ability to recall and apply the knowledge at a later stage may decline. Poor retention of accounting knowledge can create learning gaps, particularly where advanced courses require students to integrate several previously learned principles and procedures. For example, students undertaking advanced accounting may need to recall fundamental principles relating to double-entry bookkeeping, preparation of financial statements, adjustments, depreciation, inventory valuation, provisions, taxation and other accounting treatments before they can successfully address more complex accounting problems. When these foundational concepts are not adequately retained, students may spend considerable time relearning basic principles rather than concentrating on advanced accounting issues. This may consequently affect their academic performance and ability to solve higher-level accounting problems. The study therefore considered accounting knowledge retention as an important factor that may influence students’ performance in advanced accounting courses. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting students offering advanced accounting courses in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on students’ accounting knowledge retention and their performance in advanced accounting courses. The instrument covered relevant areas of accounting knowledge retention, including students’ ability to recall previously learned accounting concepts, remember accounting principles and procedures, retrieve relevant knowledge when solving accounting problems and apply previously acquired accounting knowledge to new accounting situations. Students’ performance in advanced accounting courses was examined in relation to their ability to understand advanced accounting concepts, solve accounting problems, apply accounting procedures, analyze financial reporting situations and arrive at appropriate accounting solutions. Where applicable, students’ academic performance records or appropriately structured performance assessment items may also be used to provide additional evidence of their performance. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. The instrument was also subjected to an appropriate reliability procedure to establish its consistency before administration to the respondents. Data collection was conducted using procedures that ensured adequate participation and retrieval of the research instruments. Respondents were provided with appropriate instructions to enable them to provide accurate responses to the items presented. The data obtained from the study were organized, coded and analyzed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the data collected. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis was designed to determine whether accounting knowledge retention has a statistically significant impact on students’ performance in advanced accounting courses. The study focused on the extent to which students’ ability to retain accounting knowledge contributes to their success in advanced accounting learning. Accounting knowledge retention encompasses more than remembering isolated definitions or accounting rules. It involves students’ ability to maintain previously acquired knowledge and retrieve it when faced with new accounting problems. Effective retention allows students to establish connections between basic and advanced accounting concepts and use prior knowledge as a foundation for acquiring more complex knowledge. Students with stronger retention may therefore be better positioned to recognize accounting principles, select appropriate procedures, perform required calculations and explain the accounting treatment applicable to different situations. In contrast, inadequate retention may result in confusion, repeated errors, difficulty in recalling accounting procedures and dependence on memorization without adequate understanding. The study is expected to establish that accounting knowledge retention has a significant impact on students’ performance in advanced accounting courses. Students who are able to retain and retrieve previously acquired accounting knowledge are expected to demonstrate greater competence in understanding and solving advanced accounting problems. Retention of foundational accounting principles may enable students to approach advanced topics with greater confidence because they can draw upon existing knowledge when learning new concepts. It may also improve their ability to integrate different accounting principles, identify relationships among accounting concepts and apply appropriate accounting treatments to complex financial reporting situations. Effective knowledge retention may therefore contribute to improved academic performance and deeper understanding of advanced accounting courses. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students because they may create greater awareness of the importance of retaining previously learned accounting knowledge. Students may be encouraged to adopt learning practices that promote long-term retention rather than relying solely on short-term memorization for examinations. Regular revision, retrieval practice, practical accounting exercises, problem-solving activities and continuous engagement with previously learned accounting concepts may assist students in retaining important knowledge. The findings may also encourage students to revisit foundational accounting concepts before progressing to advanced topics, thereby reducing learning gaps and improving their ability to handle complex accounting problems. The findings will also be beneficial to accounting lecturers. The study may provide lecturers with useful information about the relationship between students’ retention of accounting knowledge and their performance in advanced courses. Lecturers may use the findings to identify areas in which students demonstrate weaknesses in recalling prerequisite accounting concepts and provide appropriate reinforcement before introducing more complex topics. Teaching strategies such as cumulative revision, frequent formative assessments, retrieval exercises, practical demonstrations, worked examples and problem-based learning may be incorporated into accounting instruction to strengthen students’ retention. Lecturers may also deliberately connect new accounting concepts to previously learned topics so that students can develop stronger relationships between different areas of accounting knowledge. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and educational administrators in Nigeria. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening the continuity and progression of accounting education programmes. Accounting curricula should be structured in a manner that allows students to build progressively on previously acquired knowledge rather than treating accounting courses as completely separate subjects. Prerequisite knowledge should be clearly identified, reinforced and integrated into advanced accounting courses. Curriculum planners may also consider the inclusion of learning activities that encourage continuous revision and application of accounting principles throughout the programme. Such an approach can help students maintain important foundational knowledge as they progress to more complex accounting subjects. University and institutional management may also benefit from the findings by recognizing the importance of providing learning environments and resources that support long-term knowledge retention. Adequate accounting textbooks, current financial reporting materials, digital learning platforms, accounting practice software and other instructional resources may provide students with opportunities to repeatedly engage with accounting concepts. Institutions may also support lecturers through professional development programmes that expose them to innovative teaching approaches for improving knowledge retention and academic performance. The effective use of technology-supported learning resources may provide additional opportunities for students to review accounting concepts outside normal classroom hours. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of moving away from teaching approaches that rely excessively on short-term memorization. Accounting is a cumulative discipline in which knowledge acquired at one level frequently serves as the foundation for understanding concepts at a higher level. Consequently, students need to retain and apply accounting knowledge over an extended period. Instructional strategies that promote active learning, repeated practice, retrieval of previously learned information, classroom discussion, case studies and practical problem-solving may help students develop more durable accounting knowledge. Continuous assessment can also assist lecturers in identifying areas of weak retention and providing timely corrective instruction before students progress to more advanced topics. The study also highlights the importance of practical application in strengthening accounting knowledge retention. Students may retain accounting concepts more effectively when they are given opportunities to apply them repeatedly to different accounting situations. For example, knowledge of basic accounting adjustments can be reinforced through exercises that require students to apply those adjustments in more complex financial statement preparation and analysis. Similarly, knowledge of accounting principles can be reinforced through case studies involving realistic business transactions. Such practical applications can help students understand not only what an accounting principle means but also how and when it should be applied. This may result in stronger knowledge retention and improved performance in advanced accounting courses. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian tertiary institutions should strengthen strategies aimed at improving the retention of accounting knowledge among students. Accounting lecturers should incorporate regular revision, retrieval practice, cumulative assessments and practical problem-solving exercises into accounting instruction. Students should be encouraged to review foundational accounting concepts continuously and relate previously learned knowledge to new and more advanced accounting topics. Lecturers should also identify prerequisite concepts before teaching advanced accounting topics and provide reinforcement where students demonstrate gaps in their prior knowledge. The study further recommends that curriculum planners should ensure that accounting programmes provide a logical progression from basic to advanced accounting knowledge. Advanced accounting courses should build clearly on relevant concepts previously taught, while appropriate revision activities should be incorporated to reinforce prerequisite knowledge. Educational institutions should also provide lecturers and students with current learning resources and digital tools that facilitate continuous engagement with accounting materials. In addition, assessment practices should include questions that require students to retrieve and apply knowledge acquired in earlier courses rather than focusing exclusively on newly taught material. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting knowledge retention in improving students’ performance in advanced accounting courses in Nigeria. Accounting knowledge acquired at the foundational level provides an essential basis for understanding more complex accounting concepts and solving advanced accounting problems. Students who can retain, retrieve and apply previously acquired accounting knowledge are likely to be better equipped to understand advanced accounting principles, analyze complex financial reporting situations and arrive at appropriate accounting solutions. Strengthening accounting knowledge retention through continuous revision, practical application, active learning, retrieval-based activities and appropriate assessment strategies can therefore contribute to improved academic performance and more effective accounting education in Nigeria.
