Impact of Accounting Students’ Participation in Business Networking Events on Their Professional Networking Skills in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Business networking events provide students with opportunities to interact with professionals, employers, entrepreneurs, colleagues, and other individuals who can contribute to their professional development. Professional networking skills refer to the ability to establish, develop, maintain, and effectively manage professional relationships for purposes such as information sharing, career development, collaboration, and employment opportunities. For accounting students, strong networking skills can support their transition from academic environments into professional practice and help them build useful relationships within and beyond the accounting profession. However, some students may have limited opportunities to develop these skills through direct professional interaction. This study therefore examines the impact of accounting students’ participation in business networking events on their professional networking skills in Nigerian universities. The study is intended to determine whether participation in business networking events improves students’ ability to develop and maintain professional relationships. Business networking events may include professional conferences, career fairs, business forums, accounting association meetings, entrepreneurship events, seminars, workshops, and other organized gatherings that facilitate interaction among students and professionals. Through participation in these events, students can introduce themselves to professionals, exchange contact information, engage in professional conversations, ask questions, and learn how to maintain relationships after initial contact. Such experiences can also expose students to different communication approaches, professional etiquette, and strategies for building mutually beneficial relationships. Regular participation may therefore provide practical opportunities for students to develop networking abilities that are difficult to acquire through classroom instruction alone. Professional networking skills are important to accounting students because relationships with professionals can provide access to career information, employment opportunities, mentorship, professional knowledge, and collaborative activities. Students who possess effective networking skills may be more confident when communicating with professionals, introducing themselves, maintaining professional contacts, and identifying opportunities for career advancement. Participation in business networking events can contribute to the development of these skills by providing students with direct opportunities to practise professional communication and relationship-building. The study will therefore assess the extent to which participation in business networking events influences students’ professional networking skills. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will consist of accounting students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ participation in business networking events and their professional networking skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established using a suitable reliability technique. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the impact of business networking event participation on students’ professional networking skills. The study is expected to establish that participation in business networking events has a positive impact on accounting students’ professional networking skills. Students who participate actively in such events are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in initiating professional conversations, establishing professional contacts, communicating appropriately with professionals, maintaining professional relationships, and identifying relevant networking opportunities. The study may also establish that repeated exposure to professional environments gives students greater opportunities to practise interpersonal and communication skills in realistic situations. These expected findings would demonstrate the value of business networking events as a component of professional development in accounting education. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education in universities. Accounting educators could encourage students to participate in professional and business networking activities as part of their broader academic and career development. Departments may also incorporate networking exercises, professional interaction sessions, industry engagements, and structured opportunities for students to communicate with practising accountants and business professionals. Such activities could complement classroom learning by allowing students to practise communication and relationship-building skills in professional environments. The study will be significant to accounting students, lecturers, university administrators, professional accounting organizations, employers, and career development units. Students may benefit from improved professional networking abilities and greater confidence in establishing relationships with professionals. Lecturers may gain insight into the importance of experiential professional activities in developing students’ employability skills. University administrators and career development units may use the findings to strengthen industry engagement initiatives, while professional organizations and employers may gain opportunities to interact with and support prospective accounting graduates. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should provide accounting students with regular opportunities to participate in business networking events, professional conferences, career fairs, industry forums, and other activities that facilitate meaningful professional interaction. Accounting departments should collaborate with professional accounting organizations, employers, alumni, and business communities to create suitable networking opportunities for students. Students should also be encouraged to practise professional communication, relationship-building, and follow-up skills during and after networking events. The study concludes that active participation in business networking events can contribute significantly to the development of professional networking skills among accounting students and should receive greater attention within university accounting education.
