Impact of Accounting Students’ Reading Comprehension on Achievement in Financial Reporting among Nigerian Polytechnic Students

Abstract

This study examined the impact of accounting students’ reading comprehension on achievement in Financial Reporting among Nigerian polytechnic students. Reading comprehension is an important academic skill that enables students to understand, interpret, evaluate and apply information presented in written materials. In accounting education, the ability to comprehend written information is particularly important because students are regularly exposed to accounting textbooks, lecture notes, financial reporting standards, examination questions, case studies, financial statements and other technical materials. Financial Reporting requires students to understand accounting principles, interpret reporting requirements, analyze financial information and apply appropriate accounting treatments to different transactions and reporting situations. Students with inadequate reading comprehension may experience difficulty understanding technical accounting terminology, identifying important information in questions, interpreting accounting requirements and applying relevant Financial Reporting principles. This study therefore investigated whether accounting students’ reading comprehension has a significant impact on their achievement in Financial Reporting among Nigerian polytechnic students. The study was motivated by the observation that success in Financial Reporting may depend not only on students’ accounting knowledge and numerical ability but also on their capacity to understand and interpret written information. Financial Reporting questions often contain lengthy descriptions of business transactions, accounting policies, financial information and reporting requirements. Students are expected to read such information carefully, identify the relevant facts and determine the appropriate accounting treatment. A student may possess adequate computational skills but still perform poorly if the student misunderstands the wording of a question or fails to identify the accounting requirement being tested. Reading comprehension may therefore represent an important foundation for effective learning and achievement in Financial Reporting. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students offering Financial Reporting and related accounting courses in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on students’ reading comprehension and achievement in Financial Reporting. The reading comprehension component focused on students’ ability to understand accounting texts, identify main ideas, interpret technical terminology, recognize relevant information, draw meaning from written accounting materials and follow written instructions. Students’ achievement in Financial Reporting was considered in relation to their performance in tests, continuous assessments, assignments, examinations and other academic activities requiring the application of Financial Reporting knowledge. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether accounting students’ reading comprehension has a statistically significant impact on their achievement in Financial Reporting. The study is expected to establish that accounting students’ reading comprehension has a significant impact on achievement in Financial Reporting. Students with stronger reading comprehension may be better able to understand complex accounting explanations, interpret technical information and identify the requirements contained in Financial Reporting questions. Effective comprehension can enable students to process written information accurately before applying accounting principles or performing calculations. Consequently, students who understand what a question or accounting requirement is asking may be more likely to select an appropriate accounting treatment and arrive at a correct solution. Reading comprehension is particularly important when students study Financial Reporting standards and principles. Such materials often contain technical language, detailed requirements and specific conditions that must be understood before an appropriate accounting treatment can be determined. Students need to distinguish important words and phrases, understand the relationship between different requirements and interpret the implications of specific reporting conditions. Strong reading comprehension can therefore help students navigate technical accounting materials more effectively. The ability to identify relevant information is another important aspect of reading comprehension. Financial Reporting problems may contain several pieces of information, some of which may be essential to the solution while others may provide contextual information. Students need to determine which facts are relevant to the accounting issue being considered. Effective reading comprehension can help students separate important information from less significant details and focus their attention on the requirements necessary to solve the problem. Understanding accounting terminology is also closely related to reading comprehension. Financial Reporting uses specialized terms that may have precise meanings within accounting contexts. Students must understand terms relating to recognition, measurement, presentation, disclosure, assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, expenses, provisions, impairment and other accounting concepts. Misunderstanding a technical term may lead to an incorrect interpretation of an accounting question or reporting requirement. Regular exposure to accounting vocabulary can therefore strengthen students’ comprehension of Financial Reporting materials. The study further recognizes the importance of reading comprehension in interpreting examination questions. Financial Reporting examinations may present students with practical scenarios requiring them to identify relevant accounting principles and apply them to specific situations. Students must first understand the scenario before determining the appropriate accounting treatment. Strong comprehension skills can help students interpret instructions accurately, identify what is required and structure their responses appropriately. The findings of the study will be useful to accounting students because they may increase awareness of the importance of reading skills in accounting education. Students may be encouraged to read Financial Reporting materials regularly rather than relying exclusively on classroom explanations or memorized notes. Active reading can help students become familiar with accounting terminology, understand the structure of Financial Reporting materials and identify relationships among accounting concepts. The findings will also be beneficial to Financial Reporting lecturers in Nigerian polytechnics. The study may provide lecturers with information about the role of reading comprehension in students’ achievement. Lecturers can encourage students to read accounting materials critically and provide activities that require them to interpret written accounting information. They may also explain difficult terminology and demonstrate how to identify key information in lengthy accounting questions. Lecturers can incorporate reading-based activities into Financial Reporting instruction. For example, students can be provided with short extracts from accounting standards, financial statements or corporate reports and asked to identify the main accounting issue, relevant information and applicable reporting principle. Such activities can help students practice reading and interpreting accounting information while simultaneously developing Financial Reporting knowledge. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and polytechnic administrators. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening academic literacy within accounting education. Although accounting programmes appropriately emphasize technical and numerical skills, students also need the ability to read and interpret professional accounting materials. Curriculum planners may therefore consider learning activities that encourage students to develop effective reading and interpretation skills alongside technical accounting knowledge. The study also highlights the relationship between reading comprehension and independent learning. Students frequently study accounting materials outside the classroom, and their ability to learn independently depends partly on their capacity to understand written resources. Strong reading comprehension can enable students to use textbooks, lecture notes, accounting standards, journals and other reference materials more effectively. Students who can independently interpret these resources may have greater opportunities to reinforce classroom learning. Reading comprehension may also support students’ ability to analyze financial statements and related disclosures. Corporate financial statements contain numerical information as well as accounting policies, explanatory notes and other textual disclosures. Students need to read and understand these explanations before they can fully interpret the financial information presented. Consequently, comprehension skills can contribute to broader financial reporting and financial statement analysis abilities. The study further recognizes that reading comprehension should not be treated as a general language skill alone. Accounting students require the ability to comprehend specialized professional language. Accounting education should therefore expose students to authentic accounting texts and professional materials. Reading annual reports, accounting standards, financial reporting guidelines and accounting case studies can provide students with practical exposure to the language used in the accounting profession. Technology can also provide additional opportunities for developing reading comprehension. Electronic textbooks, online accounting resources, digital journals and financial reporting databases allow students to access a wide range of accounting materials. Students can use digital search functions to identify unfamiliar terms and compare explanations across different sources. However, students should be guided to evaluate the reliability and relevance of digital accounting information. The study may also have implications for students’ performance in advanced accounting courses. Financial Reporting provides a foundation for several areas of accounting education, including Advanced Financial Accounting, Auditing, Corporate Reporting and financial analysis. Students who develop strong comprehension skills may be better prepared to understand increasingly complex accounting materials as they progress through their academic programmes. Assessment practices can also be used to strengthen reading comprehension. Lecturers can design questions that require students to interpret accounting scenarios, explain reporting requirements and identify relevant information before performing calculations. Such assessments can help students develop the ability to read accounting questions carefully and apply appropriate reasoning to their answers. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should give greater attention to reading comprehension within accounting education. Financial Reporting lecturers should incorporate reading and interpretation activities into their lessons and encourage students to engage regularly with accounting textbooks, standards, financial reports and other professional materials. Students should be taught how to identify key information, interpret technical terminology and determine the specific requirements of accounting questions. The study further recommends that lecturers should use practical accounting documents and case studies to develop students’ comprehension skills. Students should be given opportunities to read extracts from financial statements, accounting standards and corporate reports and explain the accounting implications of the information presented. This can help students connect reading comprehension with practical Financial Reporting activities. Accounting departments should also encourage students to develop effective reading habits. Students should read accounting materials consistently, underline important information, identify unfamiliar terminology, summarize difficult passages and seek clarification when necessary. These activities can improve comprehension and make complex Financial Reporting materials easier to understand. Polytechnic administrators and curriculum planners should support the provision of current accounting textbooks, financial reporting standards, journals, corporate reports and other relevant reading materials. Access to appropriate resources can increase students’ exposure to professional accounting language and provide additional opportunities to develop their comprehension skills. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of accounting students’ reading comprehension in achieving success in Financial Reporting among Nigerian polytechnic students. Financial Reporting requires students to understand technical texts, interpret accounting requirements, identify relevant information and apply accounting principles to practical situations. Strong reading comprehension can therefore support students’ ability to understand course materials, interpret examination questions, analyze financial information and apply Financial Reporting concepts accurately. Strengthening reading comprehension through regular exposure to accounting texts, practical financial reporting materials, classroom reading activities, technical vocabulary development and appropriate assessment practices can contribute to improved achievement in Financial Reporting and better academic and professional preparation among accounting students in Nigerian polytechnics.
