Impact of Cash Discount Exercises on Students’ Discount Accounting Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Cash discounts are an important aspect of accounting practice because they affect the amounts recorded for sales, purchases, receivables, payables, and cash transactions. Accounting personnel are expected to understand discount terms, determine applicable discount amounts, distinguish between trade and cash discounts, and record discount-related transactions accurately in accounting records. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may experience difficulties in applying cash discount principles because of inadequate opportunities to engage in practical exercises involving realistic business transactions. Cash Discount Exercises provide students with opportunities to practise discount calculations, interpret payment terms, determine eligible discounts, and record discount transactions using simulated accounting situations. Such practical activities may improve students’ ability to apply discount principles accurately and develop competencies required for accounting practice. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Cash Discount Exercises on discount accounting skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop accounting competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Cash Discount Exercises may influence students’ discount accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, discount accounting skills assessment scales, practical cash discount exercises, simulated invoices and receipts, sales and purchase documents, transaction-recording tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Cash Discount Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of cash discount terms, interpretation of payment terms, discount-period identification, discount-rate identification, early-payment identification, eligible-payment identification, discount calculation, percentage calculation, net-payment calculation, gross-amount determination, discount-amount determination, invoice interpretation, receipt interpretation, sales-document analysis, purchase-document analysis, customer-account analysis, supplier-account analysis, receivable analysis, payable analysis, cash-receipt analysis, cash-payment analysis, discount-allowed identification, discount-received identification, discount-expired identification, discount-forfeiture identification, transaction-date analysis, payment-date analysis, due-date determination, settlement-period determination, cash discount computation, multiple-discount calculation, sequential discount calculation, partial-payment discount calculation, instalment-payment discount calculation, prompt-payment discount calculation, discount eligibility assessment, discount-limit identification, discount-term comparison, cash-versus-credit transaction analysis, trade-discount differentiation, cash-discount differentiation, discount documentation, discount authorization, discount verification, invoice verification, receipt verification, payment-evidence verification, transaction classification, journal-entry preparation, ledger posting, sales-account recording, purchases-account recording, discount-allowed recording, discount-received recording, cash-account recording, bank-account recording, accounts-receivable recording, accounts-payable recording, customer-account updating, supplier-account updating, transaction reconciliation, discount reconciliation, invoice-receipt matching, payment-document matching, error identification, error correction, incorrect-discount identification, incorrect-rate identification, incorrect-payment-date identification, incorrect-net-amount identification, incorrect-gross-amount identification, duplicate-discount identification, unauthorized-discount identification, expired-discount identification, unsupported-discount identification, discount-variance identification, expenditure or revenue adjustment, financial-record updating, accounting-software exercises, spreadsheet exercises, digital transaction recording, electronic invoice analysis, electronic receipt analysis, electronic payment documentation, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging discount-accounting scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Cash Discount Exercises, practical experiences, and discount accounting skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Cash Discount Exercises on students’ discount accounting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, discount accounting skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Cash Discount Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ discount accounting skills in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured cash discount exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to interpret discount terms, calculate discount amounts, determine eligible payments, and record discount-related transactions accurately. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Cash Discount Exercises to contribute significantly to improved discount accounting skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Cash Discount Exercises, discount accounting skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, cash discounts, trade discounts, discount calculations, payment terms, discount eligibility, discount allowed, discount received, sales accounting, purchase accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash transactions, transaction documentation, invoice analysis, receipt analysis, journal entries, ledger posting, transaction reconciliation, error detection, error correction, internal controls, accounting software, spreadsheet skills, digital accounting, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education, university and polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ practical discount-accounting competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Cash Discount Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, providing realistic invoices, receipts, and payment documents for practical instruction, strengthening students’ discount-calculation and transaction-recording skills, incorporating discount verification and reconciliation activities, improving digital discount-accounting competencies, providing repeated practical exercises and structured feedback, expanding collaboration between educational institutions and accounting workplaces, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary business transaction and financial-recording requirements in Nigeria.
