Impact of Client-Service Training on Accounting Education Students’ Professional Relationship Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Client-service training is an important component of accounting education because it prepares students with the interpersonal and professional skills required to interact effectively with clients and other stakeholders in accounting-related environments. Accounting education students’ professional relationship skills are essential for effective communication, trust building, client interaction, and successful delivery of professional accounting services. However, students may possess adequate technical accounting knowledge without having sufficient skills for managing professional relationships with clients. This study therefore examines the impact of client-service training on Accounting Education students’ professional relationship skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Client-service training involves structured learning activities designed to develop students’ understanding of effective client interaction and professional service delivery. The training exposes students to areas such as professional communication, active listening, understanding client needs, responding to enquiries, handling complaints, maintaining confidentiality, managing expectations, and demonstrating appropriate professional conduct. Through practical exercises, role-playing, case scenarios, and simulated client interactions, students can develop the interpersonal abilities required in professional accounting environments. Students’ professional relationship skills refer to their ability to establish, maintain, and manage appropriate professional relationships with clients and other stakeholders. These skills include effective communication, active listening, empathy, respect, responsiveness, professionalism, conflict management, and the ability to maintain positive working relationships. Developing these skills is important because accounting professionals frequently interact with clients, colleagues, managers, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders while performing their responsibilities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on client-service training and students’ professional relationship skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while the hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that client-service training has a significant positive impact on Accounting Education students’ professional relationship skills. Effective training is expected to improve students’ communication, listening, responsiveness, professional conduct, and ability to interact appropriately with clients and other stakeholders in accounting-related situations. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate client-service activities into accounting-related courses through role-playing, simulated client meetings, case studies, communication exercises, and practical scenarios involving client enquiries and service challenges. Such activities may help students connect accounting knowledge with the interpersonal requirements of professional practice. The study is expected to benefit Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, polytechnic administrators, curriculum developers, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may develop stronger professional relationship skills and greater preparedness for workplace interactions, while lecturers may gain useful insights for improving the practical and employability focus of accounting education. Curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen professional skills development within accounting education programmes. The study recommends that accounting lecturers should integrate structured client-service training into accounting education through practical, experiential, and learner-centred activities. Greater emphasis should be placed on communication practice, client-interaction simulations, active listening, complaint handling, professional etiquette, and stakeholder relationship exercises. The study concludes that effective client-service training can improve Accounting Education students’ professional relationship skills and contribute to their readiness for effective professional accounting practice.
