Impact of Control Account Exercises on Students’ Ability to Reconcile Subsidiary Ledger Balances in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Control account exercises are an important practical component of accounting education because they provide students with opportunities to apply accounting principles in the recording, summarization, and verification of transactions. Control accounts are used to summarize transactions recorded in subsidiary ledgers and provide a means of checking the accuracy and completeness of subsidiary ledger records. Students therefore need adequate knowledge and practical skills in preparing and using control accounts to reconcile subsidiary ledger balances. This study examines the impact of control account exercises on students’ ability to reconcile subsidiary ledger balances in Nigerian universities. Control account exercises expose students to the practical procedures involved in preparing sales ledger control accounts, purchases ledger control accounts, and other relevant control accounts. Through these exercises, students learn how individual transactions recorded in subsidiary ledgers are summarized in control accounts and how differences between control account balances and subsidiary ledger totals can be identified. Regular practice may also help students understand the relationship between control accounts and subsidiary ledgers while improving their accuracy in accounting reconciliation. The ability to reconcile subsidiary ledger balances is an important practical accounting skill because discrepancies may arise from errors, omissions, incorrect postings, or differences in recording procedures. Students need to be able to compare control account balances with the corresponding subsidiary ledger totals, identify differences, investigate possible causes, and make appropriate corrections where necessary. Control account exercises can provide repeated opportunities for students to develop these skills and strengthen their ability to detect inconsistencies in accounting records. The study will adopt a survey research design and focus on accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on students’ exposure to control account exercises and their ability to reconcile subsidiary ledger balances. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, and the hypothesis formulated for the study will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that control account exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ ability to reconcile subsidiary ledger balances. Students who engage regularly in control account exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to compare ledger balances, identify discrepancies, trace accounting errors, and determine appropriate adjustments. Continuous practice may also enhance students’ analytical skills and confidence in handling reconciliation problems involving subsidiary ledgers. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of financial accounting in Nigerian universities. Accounting lecturers may be encouraged to provide students with regular and practical control account exercises rather than relying primarily on theoretical explanations. Classroom activities involving sales ledger control accounts, purchases ledger control accounts, reconciliation tasks, error identification, and adjustment procedures can provide students with valuable opportunities to develop practical accounting competence. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, curriculum developers, university administrators, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger reconciliation and error-detection skills, while lecturers may gain insight into the importance of practical exercises in improving students’ understanding of control accounts. Curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen practical accounting activities relating to subsidiary ledgers and reconciliation procedures within accounting education programmes. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen the teaching of control accounts through regular practical exercises, subsidiary ledger reconciliation activities, error-identification tasks, and guided correction of discrepancies. Lecturers should expose students to different reconciliation situations and provide timely feedback on their procedures and calculations. The study concludes that effective control account exercises can significantly improve students’ ability to reconcile subsidiary ledger balances and contribute to the development of stronger practical accounting skills.
