Impact of Digital Identity Education on Accounting Students’ Knowledge of Secure Financial Transactions in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

The increasing use of digital platforms for banking, electronic payments, online purchases, and other financial activities has made digital identity an important component of secure financial transactions. Digital identity education provides students with knowledge of digital identification methods, identity verification processes, authentication practices, and the protection of personal information during electronic financial activities. However, inadequate understanding of digital identity may expose individuals to identity misuse, unauthorized access, and insecure financial transactions. This study examines the impact of digital identity education on accounting students’ knowledge of secure financial transactions in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is aimed at determining whether digital identity education improves students’ understanding of practices required to conduct financial transactions safely in digital environments. Digital identity education involves structured learning activities that help students understand how personal and digital identities are created, verified, authenticated, and protected when using electronic services. The education may cover digital identification, identity verification, passwords, authentication methods, personal information protection, account security, and responsible use of digital financial platforms. Through classroom instruction, practical demonstrations, case studies, and technology-based activities, students can develop greater awareness of the relationship between digital identity and financial security. Such education can also help students understand the importance of protecting their identity information when accessing digital financial services. Students’ knowledge of secure financial transactions refers to their understanding of the practices and precautions required to conduct electronic financial activities safely. This includes knowledge of secure authentication, protection of personal financial information, verification of transaction requests, recognition of suspicious activities, and responsible use of digital financial platforms. Digital identity education may strengthen this knowledge by helping students understand how digital identity information is connected to access, verification, and security in financial transactions. Adequate knowledge can therefore help students make informed decisions and adopt safer practices when engaging in digital financial activities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to digital identity education and their knowledge of secure financial transactions. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the impact of digital identity education on students’ knowledge of secure financial transactions. The study is expected to establish that digital identity education has a positive impact on accounting students’ knowledge of secure financial transactions. Students who receive adequate exposure to digital identity education are expected to demonstrate stronger knowledge of identity verification, authentication, personal information protection, and safe practices for conducting electronic financial transactions. The study may further establish that increased awareness of digital identity contributes to students’ ability to recognize potential security risks and take appropriate precautions when using digital financial platforms. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate digital identity and financial security concepts into relevant accounting, information systems, and financial education courses. Practical demonstrations, case studies, simulations, and technology-supported learning activities may provide students with opportunities to understand how digital identity practices affect financial transaction security. Such approaches can help connect accounting education with the technological and security requirements of contemporary financial environments. The study is expected to be significant to accounting students, lecturers, polytechnic management, curriculum developers, financial educators, and other stakeholders. Students may benefit from improved knowledge of digital identity practices and secure financial transactions, while lecturers may gain greater awareness of the importance of integrating digital identity concepts into accounting instruction. Curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen digital financial security components within Accounting Education programmes. The study may also contribute to preparing graduates who can interact responsibly with digital financial systems in academic, personal, and professional environments. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen digital identity education within Accounting Education programmes by providing students with practical knowledge of identity verification, authentication, information protection, and secure electronic financial practices. Lecturers should use practical examples, demonstrations, simulations, and case studies to improve students’ understanding of digital identity and financial security. Students should also be encouraged to adopt responsible practices when using digital financial platforms and protecting personal financial information. The study concludes that effective digital identity education can contribute to improving accounting students’ knowledge of secure financial transactions and preparing them for increasingly digital financial environments.
