Impact of Economic Literacy on Students’ Understanding of Personal Financial Decisions in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Economic literacy is an important educational competency that may influence students’ ability to understand economic information, evaluate financial alternatives, and make informed personal financial decisions. Students in Nigerian polytechnics are increasingly required to manage personal income, allowances, savings, expenditure, borrowing, digital payments, and other financial responsibilities while navigating changing economic conditions. However, inadequate understanding of basic economic concepts such as inflation, interest rates, opportunity cost, purchasing power, taxation, demand and supply, and financial risk may affect students’ ability to make appropriate personal financial decisions. Economic literacy provides students with knowledge and analytical skills that may help them understand economic conditions and apply economic principles to everyday financial choices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of economic literacy on students’ understanding of personal financial decisions in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Economic Theory, Human Capital Theory, and Rational Choice Theory. Economic Theory provides the conceptual foundation for understanding how individuals respond to scarcity, incentives, prices, income, opportunity costs, and changing economic conditions. Human Capital Theory explains how education and acquired knowledge enhance individuals’ competencies and improve their ability to make productive and informed decisions. Rational Choice Theory explains how individuals use available information to compare alternatives, evaluate costs and benefits, and select options that provide greater expected benefits. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how economic literacy may influence students’ understanding of personal financial decisions. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, schools or faculties, departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Economic literacy will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of scarcity, opportunity cost, economic choices, demand and supply, market prices, inflation, purchasing power, interest rates, taxation, unemployment, economic growth, exchange rates, savings, borrowing, investment, financial risk, consumer decisions, budgeting, income management, expenditure planning, and interpretation of basic economic information. Students’ understanding of personal financial decisions will be assessed using indicators such as budgeting, saving, spending, borrowing, debt management, interest-rate decisions, price comparisons, financial planning, emergency-fund decisions, digital-payment decisions, consumer choices, investment awareness, financial-risk assessment, opportunity-cost evaluation, and responses to changes in inflation and other economic conditions. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized economic-literacy assessment items, scenario-based questions, personal-financial-decision tasks, decision-making scales, and pre-test and post-test instruments where appropriate. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic characteristics, economic-literacy levels, sources of economic information, and understanding of personal financial decisions. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of economic literacy on students’ understanding of personal financial decisions. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ economic-literacy and personal-financial-decision scores before and after an economic-literacy intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that economic literacy has a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of personal financial decisions in Nigerian polytechnics. Students with higher levels of economic literacy are expected to demonstrate a better understanding of how economic conditions and principles influence everyday financial choices. Understanding scarcity may improve students’ ability to recognize the limitations of available financial resources. Opportunity-cost knowledge may help students evaluate what they give up when choosing one financial alternative over another. Understanding demand and supply may improve students’ ability to interpret price changes and make more informed purchasing decisions. Knowledge of market prices may strengthen students’ ability to compare alternatives before spending. Understanding inflation may improve students’ awareness of changes in purchasing power and the importance of adjusting spending and saving decisions accordingly. Knowledge of interest rates may help students understand the cost of borrowing and the potential returns from savings. Taxation knowledge may improve students’ understanding of deductions and financial obligations. Awareness of unemployment and economic conditions may help students make more realistic income and expenditure plans. Exchange-rate knowledge may improve students’ understanding of the implications of currency changes for imported goods, digital transactions, and other financial decisions. Knowledge of savings may encourage students to consider regular saving and future financial needs. Understanding borrowing may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate loans and repayment obligations. Investment knowledge may improve students’ awareness of potential returns and associated risks. Financial-risk awareness may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate uncertain financial alternatives. Consumer-decision activities may improve students’ ability to distinguish needs from wants and evaluate the financial implications of purchases. Budgeting knowledge may strengthen students’ ability to plan income and allocate available resources. Income-management skills may improve students’ ability to distribute financial resources across competing needs. Expenditure-planning activities may reduce impulsive spending and encourage more deliberate financial choices. Emergency-fund awareness may improve students’ preparedness for unexpected financial needs. Digital-payment knowledge may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate the costs, convenience, security, and risks associated with electronic financial transactions. Price-comparison activities may improve students’ ability to identify financially advantageous alternatives. Financial-planning activities may strengthen students’ ability to consider short-term and long-term financial goals. Debt-management knowledge may improve students’ understanding of repayment responsibilities and the consequences of excessive borrowing. Interest-rate comparisons may help students select more appropriate saving or borrowing alternatives. Investment-risk assessment may improve students’ ability to consider risk before committing financial resources. Opportunity-cost evaluation may strengthen students’ ability to compare competing financial uses of limited resources. Economic-scenario exercises may improve students’ ability to respond appropriately to changes in prices, inflation, income, interest rates, and other economic conditions. However, the effectiveness of economic literacy may be influenced by limited access to reliable economic information, misinformation on social media, peer influence, inadequate financial education, low income, unstable economic conditions, limited practical exposure to financial decision-making, cultural attitudes toward money, and students’ previous financial experiences. The study therefore expects relevant, practical, accessible, and sustained economic-literacy education to contribute significantly to improved understanding of personal financial decisions among students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on economic literacy, personal financial decisions, economic education, financial decision-making, consumer behaviour, savings behaviour, borrowing decisions, budgeting, investment awareness, financial planning, inflation awareness, interest-rate understanding, purchasing power, opportunity cost, economic reasoning, financial education, student financial behaviour, and polytechnic education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, economics and business-related departments, lecturers, curriculum developers, financial-education organizations, financial institutions, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders regarding strategies for strengthening students’ economic and financial decision-making competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical economic-literacy activities into polytechnic education, strengthening students’ understanding of inflation and purchasing power, improving knowledge of interest rates and borrowing costs, promoting effective budgeting and saving practices, developing students’ ability to evaluate financial alternatives, strengthening understanding of economic information, improving financial-risk awareness, and preparing students to make more informed personal financial decisions in Nigeria.
