Impact of Exchange Rate Education on Students’ Understanding of Foreign Currency Transactions in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Understanding foreign currency transactions is an important accounting competency for students because businesses increasingly engage in international purchases, sales, payments, receipts, investments, and other transactions involving different currencies. Exchange rate fluctuations can affect the naira value of foreign currency transactions and create accounting implications that require proper recognition, measurement, recording, and reporting. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties in understanding exchange rate concepts and applying them to practical foreign currency transactions due to limited exposure to realistic accounting situations. Exchange Rate Education provides students with opportunities to understand exchange rate determination, currency conversion, exchange rate fluctuations, foreign currency transaction recording, and the accounting treatment of exchange differences. Such education may improve students’ ability to interpret and record foreign currency transactions accurately. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Exchange Rate Education on students’ understanding of foreign currency transactions in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical understanding through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and application. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes the role of knowledge, information processing, comprehension, and problem-solving in developing students’ understanding of complex accounting concepts. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and skills improves students’ competence, productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Exchange Rate Education may influence students’ understanding of foreign currency transactions. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, foreign currency transaction knowledge tests, exchange rate interpretation exercises, currency conversion tasks, practical accounting exercises, performance assessment rubrics, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Exchange Rate Education will be assessed using indicators such as exchange rate concepts, exchange rate quotations, direct quotation, indirect quotation, buying rate, selling rate, official exchange rate, market exchange rate, foreign currency units, domestic currency equivalents, currency conversion, exchange rate calculation, appreciation, depreciation, exchange rate fluctuations, exchange rate movements, exchange rate differences, transaction-date exchange rates, settlement-date exchange rates, reporting-date exchange rates, spot exchange rates, historical exchange rates, average exchange rates, exchange rate sources, currency symbols, currency codes, foreign currency amounts, naira equivalents, foreign currency receivables, foreign currency payables, foreign currency sales, foreign currency purchases, foreign currency expenses, foreign currency income, foreign currency assets, foreign currency liabilities, foreign currency invoices, foreign currency receipts, foreign currency payments, foreign currency bank transactions, international trade transactions, import transactions, export transactions, foreign supplier transactions, foreign customer transactions, foreign currency deposits, foreign currency transfers, bank exchange charges, transaction costs, exchange gains, exchange losses, exchange difference calculations, journal-entry preparation, ledger posting, receivable recording, payable recording, foreign currency cash recording, settlement procedures, revaluation procedures, financial reporting, disclosure requirements, exchange rate risk awareness, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, case studies, individual assignments, group activities, repeated practice, lecturer feedback, and scenario-based learning. Students’ understanding of foreign currency transactions will be assessed using indicators such as ability to explain exchange rate concepts, interpret exchange rate quotations, distinguish direct and indirect quotations, identify buying and selling rates, distinguish official and market rates, identify foreign currency units, determine domestic currency equivalents, convert currencies accurately, calculate exchange rates, explain currency appreciation and depreciation, interpret exchange rate fluctuations, calculate exchange rate differences, identify appropriate transaction-date rates, settlement-date rates, and reporting-date rates, distinguish spot and historical rates, use average rates where appropriate, identify reliable exchange rate sources, interpret currency symbols and codes, convert foreign currency amounts into naira equivalents, account for foreign currency receivables and payables, record foreign currency sales and purchases, account for foreign currency expenses and income, recognize foreign currency assets and liabilities, prepare foreign currency invoices and receipts, record foreign currency payments, process foreign currency bank transactions, understand import and export transactions, record foreign supplier and customer transactions, account for foreign currency deposits and transfers, recognize bank exchange charges and transaction costs, calculate exchange gains and losses, calculate exchange differences, prepare journal entries, post ledger entries, record receivables and payables, record foreign currency cash transactions, apply settlement procedures, perform revaluation procedures, understand financial reporting implications, identify disclosure requirements, recognize exchange rate risks, apply accounting principles to foreign currency transactions, demonstrate numerical accuracy, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate confidence, and demonstrate overall understanding of foreign currency transactions. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Exchange Rate Education, exchange rate knowledge, and foreign currency transaction understanding. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Exchange Rate Education on students’ understanding of foreign currency transactions. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ foreign currency transaction understanding scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Exchange Rate Education has a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of foreign currency transactions in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured and practical exchange rate education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to interpret exchange rates, convert currencies, calculate exchange differences, and apply appropriate accounting procedures to foreign currency transactions. Exchange rate concept activities may improve students’ understanding of the relationship between currencies. Exchange rate quotation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to interpret direct and indirect quotations. Buying- and selling-rate exercises may improve students’ understanding of currency exchange transactions. Official- and market-rate activities may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish different exchange rate sources. Currency conversion exercises may improve students’ ability to determine naira equivalents of foreign currency amounts. Exchange rate fluctuation activities may strengthen students’ understanding of appreciation and depreciation. Exchange difference exercises may improve students’ ability to calculate gains and losses arising from exchange rate movements. Transaction-date, settlement-date, and reporting-date activities may strengthen students’ understanding of the appropriate exchange rates applicable to different stages of a foreign currency transaction. Spot- and historical-rate exercises may improve students’ ability to distinguish different exchange rate applications. Exchange rate-source activities may strengthen students’ ability to obtain relevant exchange rate information. Foreign currency sales and purchase exercises may improve students’ ability to record international business transactions. Foreign currency receivable and payable activities may strengthen students’ ability to account for amounts owed by customers and to suppliers in foreign currencies. Foreign currency expense and income exercises may improve students’ ability to recognize the naira equivalent of international expenditures and receipts. Foreign currency asset and liability exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of balance-sheet implications. Foreign currency invoice and receipt exercises may improve students’ ability to document international transactions. Foreign currency payment activities may strengthen students’ ability to record settlement of international obligations. Foreign currency bank transaction exercises may improve students’ ability to account for foreign currency movements through bank accounts. Import and export transaction exercises may expose students to practical applications of exchange rates in international trade. Foreign supplier and customer scenarios may strengthen students’ understanding of international accounts receivable and payable. Foreign currency deposit and transfer activities may improve students’ ability to account for international banking transactions. Bank exchange-charge exercises may strengthen students’ ability to recognize transaction costs. Exchange gain and loss activities may improve students’ ability to identify the financial effects of currency movements. Exchange difference calculations may strengthen students’ numerical and analytical skills. Journal-entry exercises may improve students’ ability to translate foreign currency transactions into accounting records. Ledger-posting exercises may strengthen students’ ability to maintain appropriate accounts. Receivable and payable recording activities may improve students’ ability to maintain accurate international transaction records. Foreign currency cash-recording activities may strengthen students’ ability to reflect cash movements accurately. Settlement exercises may improve students’ understanding of the accounting consequences of paying or receiving foreign currency amounts. Revaluation activities may strengthen students’ ability to update foreign currency balances appropriately. Financial-reporting exercises may improve students’ understanding of how foreign currency transactions affect financial statements. Disclosure activities may strengthen students’ awareness of information required for transparent financial reporting. Exchange rate risk activities may improve students’ understanding of the financial implications of currency fluctuations. Practical demonstrations may provide clear examples of foreign currency accounting procedures. Guided exercises may provide structured support as students develop their understanding. Case studies may expose students to realistic international accounting situations. Individual assignments may strengthen independent problem-solving ability. Group activities may improve collaborative analysis of foreign currency transactions. Repeated practice may improve students’ accuracy, speed, confidence, and independence. Lecturer feedback may help students identify and correct errors in exchange rate calculations and accounting entries. However, the effectiveness of Exchange Rate Education may be constrained by limited access to current exchange rate information, inadequate accounting laboratories, insufficient computers, unreliable internet connectivity, unstable electricity supply, limited practical training periods, large class sizes, inadequate lecturer training, outdated instructional materials, limited exposure to international business transactions, insufficient accounting software, inadequate practical exercises, weak industry collaboration, and inadequate integration of foreign currency accounting into practical Accounting Education. The study therefore expects practical, current, structured, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Exchange Rate Education to contribute significantly to improved understanding of foreign currency transactions among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Exchange Rate Education, foreign currency transactions, exchange rate knowledge, foreign currency accounting, currency conversion, exchange rate fluctuations, exchange gains and losses, international accounting, financial reporting, accounting education, practical accounting education, Experiential Learning Theory, Cognitive Learning Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting competence, international trade accounting, foreign currency receivables, foreign currency payables, foreign currency assets, foreign currency liabilities, exchange difference calculations, journal entries, ledger posting, financial reporting, exchange rate risk, digital accounting, accounting software, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, banking institutions, financial institutions, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ understanding of foreign currency transactions. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical Exchange Rate Education into Accounting Education programmes, providing access to current exchange rate information, incorporating realistic foreign currency transaction scenarios, strengthening currency conversion and exchange-difference exercises, improving students’ ability to record foreign currency receivables and payables, incorporating international trade accounting activities, strengthening digital exchange rate and accounting skills, providing repeated practical exercises and structured feedback, expanding collaboration between polytechnics and banking, financial, and international business organizations, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary foreign currency accounting requirements in Nigeria.
