Impact of Final Account Preparation Exercises on Financial Reporting Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
The ability to prepare accurate and complete final accounts is a fundamental competency in accounting education because financial statements provide essential information about an organization's financial performance, financial position, and cash flows. Accounting education students are expected to develop practical skills in preparing final accounts from accounting records, making necessary adjustments, presenting financial information appropriately, and interpreting the resulting statements. However, conventional approaches to teaching final accounts may emphasize theoretical explanations and routine calculations without providing sufficient opportunities for students to practise the complete financial reporting process using realistic accounting information. Final Account Preparation Exercises provide students with structured opportunities to analyse trial balances, process accounting adjustments, prepare financial statements, identify errors, and present financial information in accordance with relevant accounting principles. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of final account preparation exercises on financial reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Mastery Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' engagement with practical final account preparation activities. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Mastery Learning Theory emphasizes repeated practice, formative assessment, corrective feedback, and opportunities for learners to achieve clearly defined competencies. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how final account preparation exercises may influence students' financial reporting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Final account preparation exercises will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of practical exercises, preparation of income statements, statements of financial position, statements of cash flows, statements of changes in equity, preparation of notes to accounts where applicable, trial balance analysis, accounting adjustments, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, bad and doubtful debts, inventory adjustments, provisions, disposal of non-current assets, corrections of errors, appropriation items, taxation adjustments where applicable, financial statement classification, accounting policies, spreadsheet-based activities, accounting software, case studies, lecturer guidance, feedback, and opportunities for repeated practice. Students' financial reporting skills will be assessed using indicators such as accurate interpretation of trial balances, preparation of complete financial statements, application of accounting adjustments, classification and presentation of financial information, calculation of relevant accounting figures, preparation of supporting schedules, consistency of accounting records, identification and correction of reporting errors, application of accounting principles, interpretation of financial statement information, preparation of financial reports from incomplete or adjusted records, and ability to communicate financial information clearly and accurately. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized financial reporting skills tests, final account preparation tasks, practical accounting exercises, case studies, financial reporting scenarios, spreadsheet activities, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, final account learning experiences, practical exercise exposure, and levels of financial reporting skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of final account preparation exercises on students' financial reporting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial reporting skill scores before and after exposure to final account preparation exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional financial accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that final account preparation exercises have a significant positive impact on financial reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students who regularly engage in structured final account preparation exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to analyse trial balances, process accounting adjustments, prepare complete financial statements, classify financial information, identify reporting errors, and present accounting information accurately than students exposed primarily to conventional lecture-based instruction. Practical exercises may enable students to understand the relationships among accounting records, adjustments, financial statement elements, and reported financial performance. Repeated practice with progressively complex accounting scenarios may strengthen students' numerical accuracy, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and confidence in preparing financial reports. Case-based exercises involving incomplete records, adjustments, and reporting errors may further improve students' ability to apply accounting principles to unfamiliar situations. Spreadsheet-based and computerized accounting activities may strengthen students' digital financial reporting skills and improve their ability to process accounting information efficiently. However, inadequate access to accounting laboratories and software, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, limited lecturer training, and inadequate exposure to realistic financial reporting situations may reduce the effectiveness of final account preparation exercises. The study therefore expects structured, practical, progressively challenging, and technology-supported final account preparation exercises to contribute significantly to improved financial reporting skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on final account preparation exercises, financial reporting skills, accounting education, financial accounting education, practical accounting competence, experiential learning, constructivist learning, mastery learning, accounting pedagogy, financial statement preparation, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, employers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical financial reporting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for increasing practical final account preparation activities, developing realistic Nigerian financial reporting cases, strengthening students' training in accounting adjustments and financial statement presentation, integrating spreadsheets and accounting software into financial reporting exercises, training accounting educators in practical financial reporting instruction, using competency-based financial reporting assessments, providing continuous corrective feedback, and creating opportunities for accounting education students to develop the financial reporting competencies required for effective professional accounting practice in Nigeria.
