Impact of Financial News Interpretation Activities on Students’ Economic Awareness among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Economic awareness is an important component of Accounting Education because accounting professionals and students are expected to understand how economic developments influence businesses, financial decisions, markets, government policies, and organizational performance. Financial news provides current information on inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, taxation, government budgets, public debt, monetary policy, banking activities, financial markets, business performance, and other economic developments. However, Accounting Education students may have limited exposure to activities that require them to interpret current financial news and connect economic events with accounting and business concepts. Financial News Interpretation Activities provide students with opportunities to examine, analyse, discuss, and interpret current financial information from newspapers, business publications, television reports, online financial platforms, official economic reports, and other credible sources. Such activities may improve students’ ability to understand economic events and their implications for businesses and individuals. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial News Interpretation Activities on economic awareness among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Information Processing Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop knowledge through practical experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active application. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes how learners construct knowledge by connecting new information with existing knowledge and experiences. Information Processing Theory explains how students receive, organize, interpret, store, and retrieve information in order to develop meaningful understanding. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial News Interpretation Activities may influence students’ economic awareness. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, economic-awareness assessment scales, financial-news interpretation tasks, case-study exercises, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial News Interpretation Activities will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of financial-news exposure, selection of financial-news sources, newspaper analysis, online financial-news analysis, television financial-news analysis, business-publication analysis, interpretation of economic reports, identification of economic indicators, identification of financial terms, identification of economic events, identification of policy announcements, identification of business developments, identification of market developments, identification of government fiscal measures, identification of monetary-policy measures, identification of taxation changes, identification of budget developments, identification of public-debt developments, identification of inflation reports, identification of interest-rate changes, identification of exchange-rate movements, identification of employment developments, identification of economic-growth information, identification of trade developments, identification of investment developments, identification of banking-sector developments, identification of financial-market developments, identification of corporate-performance information, identification of consumer-price information, identification of commodity-price information, identification of oil-market information, identification of foreign-exchange information, comparison of financial-news reports, identification of reliable information, identification of misinformation, verification of financial information, identification of news bias, interpretation of financial terminology, extraction of relevant information, summarization of financial news, discussion of financial news, group analysis, individual analysis, classroom presentations, financial-news debates, case-study interpretation, economic-event discussions, policy-impact discussions, business-impact discussions, accounting-impact discussions, decision-making exercises, reflective activities, lecturer-guided analysis, peer discussions, source evaluation, evidence assessment, data interpretation, trend interpretation, cause-and-effect analysis, economic reasoning, and practical application of financial news to accounting and business situations. Students’ economic awareness will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of inflation, understanding of interest rates, awareness of exchange-rate movements, knowledge of taxation, awareness of government budgets, understanding of public debt, awareness of monetary policy, awareness of fiscal policy, understanding of economic growth, awareness of unemployment, knowledge of trade activities, understanding of investment conditions, awareness of banking-sector developments, knowledge of financial markets, awareness of business conditions, understanding of consumer-price changes, knowledge of commodity prices, awareness of oil-market developments, understanding of foreign-exchange conditions, awareness of government economic policies, ability to identify economic indicators, ability to explain economic terms, ability to interpret financial information, ability to connect economic events with business activities, ability to relate economic developments to accounting decisions, ability to identify implications of economic policies, ability to interpret economic trends, ability to compare economic developments, ability to evaluate financial information, ability to distinguish reliable information from misleading information, ability to identify financial-news bias, ability to identify credible information sources, ability to explain economic developments, ability to discuss current economic issues, ability to apply economic knowledge to practical situations, ability to analyse business implications, ability to evaluate financial implications, ability to make informed economic judgments, ability to interpret government economic decisions, ability to understand monetary-policy decisions, ability to understand fiscal-policy decisions, ability to understand taxation changes, ability to understand budgetary developments, ability to understand debt-management issues, ability to understand inflationary pressures, ability to understand interest-rate movements, ability to understand exchange-rate changes, ability to understand economic-growth trends, ability to understand employment trends, ability to understand trade developments, ability to understand investment conditions, ability to understand banking developments, ability to understand financial-market movements, ability to understand corporate developments, ability to understand consumer-market changes, ability to understand commodity-market developments, ability to understand oil-sector developments, ability to understand foreign-exchange developments, ability to evaluate economic information, ability to interpret numerical information, ability to analyse charts and tables presented in financial news, ability to interpret percentages and rates, ability to interpret financial figures, ability to compare economic data, ability to identify changes over time, ability to recognize economic relationships, ability to identify potential business consequences, ability to identify potential accounting implications, ability to communicate economic information, ability to explain financial news clearly, ability to summarize economic developments, ability to participate in economic discussions, ability to support economic opinions with evidence, ability to critically evaluate financial information, ability to use multiple financial-news sources, ability to verify information against official sources, ability to distinguish facts from opinions, ability to identify speculative claims, ability to identify promotional content, ability to recognize misleading headlines, ability to assess source credibility, ability to demonstrate economic literacy, and overall economic awareness.
