Impact of Financial Planning Education on Students’ Long-Term Financial Planning Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Long-term financial planning is an important financial competency that enables individuals to make informed decisions about income management, saving, investment, debt management, risk protection, and future financial goals. Accounting Education students require adequate financial planning skills because their academic and professional background involves financial information, financial decision-making, budgeting, and resource management. However, exposure to accounting knowledge does not necessarily guarantee that students possess sufficient practical skills for planning their personal finances over the long term. Financial Planning Education provides an opportunity to equip students with the knowledge and practical abilities required to set financial goals, develop financial plans, manage resources, evaluate financial alternatives, and prepare for future financial needs. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial Planning Education on long-term financial planning skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Financial Literacy Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Financial Literacy Theory explains how financial knowledge and understanding influence individuals’ ability to make informed financial decisions and manage financial resources effectively. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, behavioural modelling, reinforcement, and environmental influences in the development of financial behaviours and planning competencies. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant financial knowledge and practical skills can improve students’ decision-making abilities, economic productivity, employability, and preparedness for future financial responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Planning Education may influence students’ long-term financial planning skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial planning knowledge assessments, long-term financial planning skills scales, financial planning case studies, personal financial planning exercises, practical performance rubrics, financial decision-making scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial Planning Education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to financial planning lessons, financial goal-setting activities, income planning, expenditure planning, savings planning, budgeting, emergency-fund planning, investment planning, retirement planning, debt-management education, insurance planning, risk-management education, tax-planning awareness, financial record keeping, cash-flow planning, financial forecasting, financial needs assessment, financial priority setting, short-term and long-term goal differentiation, financial-plan preparation, financial-plan implementation, financial-plan monitoring, financial-plan review, financial decision-making exercises, financial scenario analysis, investment evaluation, savings-product evaluation, financial-product comparison, interest-rate interpretation, inflation awareness, purchasing-power awareness, compound-growth understanding, opportunity-cost assessment, financial risk assessment, diversification awareness, investment-return assessment, debt-cost assessment, loan repayment planning, credit management, responsible borrowing, debt repayment strategies, financial contingency planning, education-fund planning, housing-fund planning, business-fund planning, wealth-accumulation planning, asset-building awareness, financial independence planning, succession and estate-planning awareness where appropriate, financial security planning, financial counselling exposure, digital financial planning, personal finance applications, spreadsheet-based financial planning, financial calculators, financial planning templates, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer feedback, self-assessment, reflective activities, and progressively challenging financial planning scenarios. Students’ long-term financial planning skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify financial goals, establish realistic financial objectives, prioritize financial needs, distinguish short-term from long-term goals, assess current financial positions, calculate available financial resources, plan income, plan expenditures, prepare budgets, develop savings plans, establish emergency funds, evaluate investment alternatives, compare financial products, interpret interest rates, understand inflation, assess purchasing power, understand compound growth, evaluate opportunity costs, assess financial risks, understand diversification, estimate investment returns, evaluate debt costs, prepare loan repayment plans, manage credit, develop debt repayment strategies, plan for financial contingencies, plan education expenses, plan housing expenses, plan business capital needs, plan wealth accumulation, develop asset-building strategies, plan for financial independence, consider long-term financial security, maintain financial records, prepare cash-flow projections, forecast future financial needs, develop personal financial statements, prepare financial plans, implement financial plans, monitor financial progress, review financial plans, adjust financial plans, analyse financial scenarios, make informed financial decisions, use financial planning tools, use spreadsheets for financial planning, use financial calculators, interpret digital financial information, demonstrate financial confidence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate self-control in financial decisions, demonstrate financial discipline, demonstrate goal-oriented planning, demonstrate risk awareness, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate financial responsibility, and demonstrate overall long-term financial planning competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, financial knowledge, financial behaviours, exposure to Financial Planning Education, and long-term financial planning skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Financial Planning Education on students’ long-term financial planning skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, long-term financial planning skill scores before and after participation in the educational intervention may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Financial Planning Education has a significant positive impact on long-term financial planning skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured Financial Planning Education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to establish financial goals, assess their financial positions, plan income and expenditure, save consistently, evaluate investments, manage debt, prepare for financial risks, and make informed long-term financial decisions. Financial goal-setting activities may improve students’ ability to establish realistic and measurable financial objectives. Financial priority-setting activities may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish essential financial needs from less important expenditures. Short-term and long-term goal differentiation may improve students’ understanding of different planning horizons. Income-planning activities may strengthen students’ ability to anticipate and allocate available financial resources. Expenditure-planning exercises may improve students’ ability to control spending and align expenses with financial objectives. Budgeting activities may strengthen students’ ability to prepare and implement realistic personal budgets. Savings-planning exercises may improve students’ ability to establish regular saving habits and allocate funds toward future goals. Emergency-fund activities may strengthen students’ ability to prepare for unexpected financial obligations. Investment-planning exercises may improve students’ ability to evaluate investment opportunities according to risk, return, time horizon, and financial objectives. Savings- and investment-product comparison may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate available financial alternatives. Interest-rate interpretation may improve students’ understanding of borrowing and investment costs or returns. Inflation-awareness activities may strengthen students’ ability to account for changing purchasing power in long-term financial plans. Compound-growth exercises may improve students’ understanding of how savings and investments can accumulate over time. Opportunity-cost activities may strengthen students’ ability to consider the financial consequences of alternative decisions. Financial-risk assessment may improve students’ ability to identify potential threats to long-term financial stability. Diversification activities may strengthen students’ understanding of spreading investment risk. Investment-return assessment may improve students’ ability to evaluate expected financial outcomes. Debt-cost assessment may strengthen students’ understanding of the long-term implications of borrowing. Loan-repayment exercises may improve students’ ability to prepare realistic debt repayment schedules. Credit-management activities may strengthen students’ ability to use credit responsibly. Debt-repayment strategy exercises may improve students’ ability to prioritize and manage outstanding obligations. Financial-contingency planning may strengthen students’ ability to prepare for unexpected financial circumstances. Education-fund planning may improve students’ ability to anticipate future educational expenses. Housing-fund planning may strengthen students’ ability to prepare for accommodation or property-related financial needs. Business-fund planning may improve students’ ability to plan future capital requirements. Wealth-accumulation activities may strengthen students’ ability to develop long-term asset-building strategies. Asset-building education may improve students’ understanding of accumulating productive financial resources. Financial-independence planning may strengthen students’ ability to establish strategies for reducing future financial dependence. Financial-security activities may improve students’ ability to prepare for long-term financial stability. Financial record-keeping exercises may strengthen students’ ability to monitor income, expenditure, savings, investments, and liabilities. Cash-flow planning may improve students’ ability to anticipate future inflows and outflows. Financial forecasting may strengthen students’ ability to estimate future financial needs and resources. Financial-needs assessment may improve students’ ability to identify future financial requirements. Personal financial-statement exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of their financial position. Financial-plan preparation may improve students’ ability to translate financial objectives into actionable strategies. Financial-plan implementation may strengthen students’ ability to apply planned financial decisions. Financial-plan monitoring may improve students’ ability to assess progress toward financial goals. Financial-plan review may strengthen students’ ability to identify changes in financial circumstances. Financial-plan adjustment may improve students’ ability to modify plans when income, expenses, goals, or economic conditions change. Financial decision-making exercises may strengthen students’ ability to select appropriate financial alternatives. Financial scenario analysis may improve students’ ability to respond to different financial circumstances. Financial counselling exposure may provide students with additional guidance for complex financial decisions. Digital financial-planning activities may strengthen students’ ability to use technology in monitoring and planning personal finances. Spreadsheet exercises may improve students’ ability to organize and analyse financial information. Financial-calculator activities may strengthen students’ ability to perform relevant financial calculations. Practical demonstrations may provide clear models of financial-planning procedures. Guided exercises may provide structured support during skill development. Individual assignments may strengthen independent financial-planning abilities. Group activities may improve collaborative financial problem-solving. Case studies may expose students to realistic long-term financial situations. Role-play activities may simulate practical financial decision-making situations. Repeated practice may improve students’ accuracy, confidence, discipline, and independence in financial planning. Peer assessment may expose students to alternative approaches to financial decision-making. Lecturer feedback may help students identify weaknesses in their financial plans and improve their decisions. Self-assessment may encourage students to evaluate their financial-planning competence. Reflective activities may help students learn from previous financial decisions. Progressively challenging financial scenarios may prepare students for increasingly complex long-term financial responsibilities. However, the effectiveness of Financial Planning Education may be constrained by limited financial-planning resources, inadequate practical financial education, insufficient access to financial-planning tools, limited exposure to realistic financial scenarios, large class sizes, inadequate instructional time, insufficient lecturer training, outdated instructional materials, limited access to digital financial-planning applications, low student participation, inadequate financial-literacy support, limited access to professional financial guidance, and weak integration of personal financial planning into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects practical, structured, evidence-based, student-centred, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Financial Planning Education to contribute significantly to improved long-term financial planning skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Financial Planning Education, long-term financial planning skills, financial literacy, personal financial management, financial goal setting, budgeting, savings planning, investment planning, debt management, credit management, financial risk management, emergency-fund planning, financial forecasting, cash-flow planning, wealth accumulation, asset building, financial independence, financial security, digital financial planning, financial decision-making, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, Accounting Education, practical financial education, financial competence, financial responsibility, workplace readiness, employability skills, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, Nigerian polytechnics, and financial education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education, university and polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, financial institutions, professional accounting bodies, financial-planning professionals, employers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ long-term financial planning competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Financial Planning Education into Accounting Education programmes, strengthening practical personal-finance instruction, providing realistic financial-planning simulations, improving students’ budgeting and savings competencies, incorporating investment and debt-planning activities, strengthening digital financial-planning skills, providing repeated practical exercises and structured feedback, increasing access to appropriate financial-planning resources, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with students’ long-term financial-management needs in Nigeria.
