Impact of Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises on Students’ Transaction Accuracy in Accounting Education in Nigeria

Abstract

Accurate financial transaction recording is an essential competency in Accounting Education because accounting records provide the basis for financial reporting, decision-making, internal control, auditing, and accountability. Errors in transaction recording may arise from incorrect amounts, dates, account classifications, descriptions, source documents, ledger postings, or omissions, thereby reducing the reliability of financial information. Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to compare financial records with source documents, verify transaction details, identify discrepancies, and correct recording errors. Such exercises may help bridge the gap between theoretical accounting knowledge and the practical accuracy required in accounting workplaces. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises on students’ transaction accuracy in Accounting Education in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical accounting skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises may influence students’ transaction accuracy. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, transaction-accuracy assessment instruments, source-document verification tasks, financial-record cross-checking exercises, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, error-detection tasks, error-correction exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as source-document examination, transaction-detail comparison, amount verification, date verification, account verification, transaction-description verification, payee verification, supplier verification, invoice verification, receipt verification, voucher verification, payment-evidence verification, cash-record comparison, bank-record comparison, ledger comparison, journal comparison, cash-book comparison, sales-record comparison, purchase-record comparison, expense-record comparison, accounts-receivable comparison, accounts-payable comparison, inventory-record comparison, transaction-reference verification, document-number verification, authorization verification, signature verification, supporting-document verification, transaction-classification verification, debit verification, credit verification, double-entry verification, posting verification, balancing verification, arithmetic verification, addition verification, subtraction verification, calculation verification, total verification, balance verification, reconciliation, transaction matching, record matching, duplicate-entry identification, missing-entry identification, omitted-transaction identification, incorrect-entry identification, incorrect-amount identification, incorrect-date identification, incorrect-account identification, incorrect-reference identification, incorrect-description identification, incorrect-payee identification, incorrect-supplier identification, incorrect-tax identification, unauthorized-transaction identification, unsupported-transaction identification, altered-document identification, fraudulent-record awareness, discrepancy identification, discrepancy investigation, error classification, error correction, adjusting-entry preparation, journal-entry correction, ledger correction, cash-book correction, bank-reconciliation activities, financial-record reconciliation, audit-trail review, internal-control verification, document filing, record retrieval, electronic-record verification, spreadsheet cross-checking, accounting-software verification, digital transaction matching, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging cross-checking scenarios. Students’ transaction accuracy will be assessed using indicators such as ability to examine source documents, compare transaction details, verify amounts, confirm dates, verify accounts, check descriptions, confirm payees and suppliers, verify invoices and receipts, examine vouchers and payment evidence, compare cash records, compare bank records, compare journals and ledgers, verify cash-book entries, cross-check sales and purchase records, verify expense records, compare receivable and payable records, verify inventory records, confirm transaction references, check document numbers, verify authorization and signatures, confirm supporting documents, verify transaction classifications, check debits and credits, confirm double-entry treatment, verify ledger postings, check balances, perform arithmetic checks, verify calculations and totals, match transactions across records, reconcile financial records, identify duplicate entries, identify missing entries, identify omitted transactions, detect incorrect entries, identify incorrect amounts, dates, accounts, references, descriptions, payees, suppliers, and taxes, identify unauthorized transactions, identify unsupported transactions, recognize altered documents, identify potential fraudulent records, identify discrepancies, investigate discrepancies, classify errors, correct errors, prepare adjusting entries, correct journal entries, correct ledger entries, correct cash-book entries, perform bank reconciliations, reconcile financial records, review audit trails, apply internal-control procedures, file financial records, retrieve documents, verify electronic records, cross-check spreadsheets, use accounting software for verification, match digital transactions, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate error-detection ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate adaptability, and overall transaction-accuracy competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises, practical experiences, and transaction-accuracy levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises on students’ transaction accuracy. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, transaction-accuracy scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ transaction accuracy in Accounting Education in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured financial-record cross-checking activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to examine, compare, verify, identify errors, correct discrepancies, and maintain accurate accounting records.
