Impact of Forensic Accounting Education on Students’ Ability to Identify Financial Statement Manipulation in Nigerian Universities

 

Abstract

Financial statement manipulation remains an important concern in accounting and financial reporting because deliberate misrepresentation of financial information may mislead users of financial statements, distort business performance, conceal financial problems, and undermine confidence in financial reporting. Forensic accounting education provides accounting students with specialized knowledge and analytical skills that can support the identification and investigation of suspicious financial reporting practices. Through forensic accounting instruction, students may learn about financial statement fraud, earnings manipulation, fraudulent journal entries, revenue manipulation, improper expense recognition, asset misstatement, liability concealment, unusual accounting transactions, ratio analysis, trend analysis, red-flag identification, and other techniques used to detect potentially manipulated financial information. In Nigerian universities, strengthening forensic accounting education may help prepare accounting education students to recognize financial reporting irregularities and respond appropriately to emerging fraud risks. However, inadequate practical exposure, limited access to forensic accounting tools, outdated instructional materials, insufficient specialist expertise, and an overreliance on theoretical teaching may limit students' ability to apply forensic accounting knowledge effectively. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of forensic accounting education on students' ability to identify financial statement manipulation in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Fraud Triangle Theory, Agency Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory. Fraud Triangle Theory explains financial statement fraud through the interaction of pressure, opportunity, and rationalization, providing a framework for understanding the circumstances under which manipulation may occur and the warning signs associated with fraudulent reporting. Agency Theory explains the potential conflict of interests between managers and owners or other stakeholders and highlights the importance of monitoring and controls in reducing information asymmetry and opportunistic financial reporting. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through practical experience, reflection, application, and problem-solving, making it particularly relevant to the use of forensic accounting cases and simulated financial statement investigations. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how forensic accounting education may influence students' ability to identify financial statement manipulation. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Forensic accounting education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to forensic accounting courses, financial statement fraud concepts, fraud-risk assessment, financial statement analysis, ratio analysis, trend analysis, forensic data analysis, Benford's Law, journal-entry analysis, revenue-recognition analysis, expense manipulation, asset and liability misstatement, earnings management, fraud red flags, digital forensic techniques, case-based learning, simulated fraud investigations, forensic accounting software, practical exercises, professional case studies, and lecturer guidance. Students' ability to identify financial statement manipulation will be assessed using indicators such as recognition of unusual accounting entries, identification of suspicious revenue transactions, detection of inappropriate expense recognition, identification of asset overstatement, recognition of liability understatement, detection of abnormal accounting ratios, identification of unusual trends, recognition of inconsistent financial information, analysis of journal entries, interpretation of financial statement relationships, identification of fraud red flags, assessment of suspicious transactions, and ability to distinguish legitimate accounting decisions from potentially manipulative reporting practices. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized forensic accounting knowledge tests, financial statement analysis exercises, manipulated financial statement cases, journal-entry investigation tasks, ratio and trend analysis exercises, fraud-risk scenarios, practical forensic accounting assessments, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to forensic accounting education, practical learning experiences, and levels of financial statement manipulation identification ability. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of forensic accounting education on students' ability to identify financial statement manipulation. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' manipulation-identification scores before and after exposure to forensic accounting education may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that forensic accounting education has a significant positive impact on students' ability to identify financial statement manipulation in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured, practical, and case-based forensic accounting education are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify suspicious financial reporting patterns, unusual journal entries, revenue manipulation, expense misclassification, asset overstatement, liability understatement, abnormal financial ratios, and other potential indicators of financial statement manipulation than students with limited forensic accounting exposure. Practical analysis of manipulated and authentic financial statements may help students develop investigative thinking, professional scepticism, analytical reasoning, and evidence-based judgement. Exposure to forensic accounting technologies and realistic fraud scenarios may further improve students' ability to recognize complex manipulation techniques that may not be easily identified through conventional accounting instruction. However, limited access to forensic accounting software, inadequate practical facilities, shortage of forensic accounting specialists, outdated case materials, large class sizes, and excessive reliance on theoretical instruction may reduce the effectiveness of forensic accounting education. The study therefore expects practical, technology-supported, case-based, and professionally oriented forensic accounting education to contribute significantly to improved identification of financial statement manipulation among accounting education students in Nigerian universities.

The study is expected to contribute to the literature on forensic accounting education, financial statement manipulation, fraud detection, financial reporting, accounting education, fraud-risk assessment, professional scepticism, forensic data analysis, financial statement analysis, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, forensic accounting practitioners, auditors, financial reporting regulators, curriculum developers, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening fraud-detection competencies among accounting students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical forensic accounting activities into accounting education curricula, strengthening students' exposure to financial statement fraud cases, incorporating forensic data-analysis tools and techniques into instruction, improving access to forensic accounting software and simulated financial statements, strengthening lecturers' forensic accounting competencies, promoting collaboration between universities and forensic accounting practitioners, and preparing accounting education students to identify and respond appropriately to financial statement manipulation in professional accounting environments in Nigeria.
