Impact of Inclusive Accounting Instruction on the Academic Participation of Students with Learning Difficulties in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Inclusive accounting instruction refers to teaching approaches that accommodate differences in students’ learning needs, abilities, and participation patterns within accounting classrooms. Academic participation refers to students’ involvement in classroom discussions, learning activities, practical exercises, assignments, group work, and other academic engagements. Students with learning difficulties may experience challenges in processing, understanding, or responding to conventional instructional approaches, which can affect their participation in accounting education. This study therefore examines the impact of inclusive accounting instruction on the academic participation of students with learning difficulties in Nigerian polytechnics, with the aim of determining whether inclusive instructional practices improve their involvement in academic activities. Inclusive accounting instruction may involve the use of varied teaching methods, clear explanations, structured learning activities, practical demonstrations, visual and digital learning materials, collaborative activities, and flexible approaches to classroom participation. In accounting education, these approaches can provide students with different ways of accessing, processing, and demonstrating their understanding of accounting concepts. By presenting accounting content through multiple instructional approaches and providing appropriate classroom support, lecturers may create learning environments that encourage greater involvement among students with different learning needs. Academic participation of students with learning difficulties refers to their active involvement in classroom and academic activities. Such participation may include attending lessons, contributing to discussions, asking and answering questions, completing assignments, participating in group activities, engaging in practical accounting exercises, and responding to learning tasks. Inclusive accounting instruction may improve academic participation by reducing instructional barriers, creating supportive learning environments, encouraging interaction, and providing students with appropriate opportunities to engage with accounting content. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise accounting students with learning difficulties in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through an academic participation scale and relevant observation measures designed to assess students’ involvement in accounting learning activities before and after exposure to inclusive accounting instruction. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of inclusive accounting instruction on students’ academic participation. The study is expected to establish that inclusive accounting instruction has a positive impact on the academic participation of students with learning difficulties. Students exposed to inclusive instructional approaches are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in classroom discussions, practical activities, assignments, group work, and other accounting learning activities. The study may also indicate that providing varied instructional methods and supportive learning opportunities can encourage students who experience difficulties with conventional approaches to participate more actively in accounting education. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may need to adopt instructional approaches that recognize differences in students’ learning needs and provide multiple opportunities for academic participation. Practical demonstrations, visual learning materials, structured activities, collaborative learning, clear step-by-step explanations, and appropriate digital resources may help create more supportive accounting classrooms. Such approaches may also encourage lecturers to focus on participation and engagement alongside students’ academic achievement. The study is expected to benefit accounting students with learning difficulties, lecturers, polytechnics, curriculum planners, educational administrators, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may benefit from learning environments that provide greater opportunities for participation and engagement. Lecturers may gain greater awareness of instructional approaches that can support diverse learners, while polytechnics and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen inclusive practices within accounting education programmes. The study may also contribute to the development of more accessible and student-centred accounting learning environments. The study recommends that polytechnics should encourage the adoption of inclusive accounting instructional practices that accommodate diverse learning needs. Accounting lecturers should use varied teaching methods, practical demonstrations, structured learning tasks, supportive classroom interactions, and appropriate learning resources to encourage the participation of students with learning difficulties. Institutions should also provide relevant professional development opportunities for lecturers on inclusive teaching practices. It is concluded that effective inclusive accounting instruction can enhance the academic participation of students with learning difficulties and contribute to a more supportive and accessible accounting education environment.
