Impact of Industry-Academia Collaboration on Accounting Education Students’ Employability Skills in Nigeria

Abstract

Industry-academia collaboration refers to partnerships and structured interactions between higher education institutions and organizations in the accounting and business sectors to improve students’ learning and professional preparation. Employability skills are the knowledge, competencies, attitudes, and personal attributes that enable graduates to obtain employment, perform effectively in the workplace, and adapt to changing professional demands. Concerns about the gap between university accounting education and workplace expectations have increased the need for stronger connections between accounting education and industry. This study therefore examines the impact of industry-academia collaboration on accounting education students’ employability skills in Nigeria. Industry-academia collaboration can involve internship opportunities, industry visits, guest lectures by accounting practitioners, professional workshops, workplace-based projects, mentoring programmes, joint training activities, and opportunities for students to interact with practicing accountants. These activities expose students to practical accounting procedures, professional expectations, workplace technologies, and real business situations. Regular interaction between academic institutions and industry can therefore complement classroom learning by providing students with practical experiences that reflect current workplace requirements. Employability skills among accounting education students include communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, digital competence, adaptability, professional ethics, time management, and practical accounting skills. These competencies are important because accounting graduates are expected to work effectively in environments that require both technical knowledge and transferable workplace abilities. Industry-academia collaboration can provide opportunities for students to develop and practice these competencies through direct exposure to professional activities and workplace expectations, thereby strengthening their overall employability. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure the extent of industry-academia collaboration and students’ employability skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of industry-academia collaboration on students’ employability skills. The study is expected to establish that industry-academia collaboration has a positive impact on accounting education students’ employability skills. Students who participate in meaningful industry-related activities are expected to demonstrate stronger communication, teamwork, problem-solving, digital, professional, and practical accounting competencies. The study may also indicate that continuous interaction with industry practitioners helps students develop a clearer understanding of workplace expectations and improves their preparedness for employment after graduation. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting educators may need to provide more opportunities for students to interact with practicing accountants and participate in practical workplace-related activities. Incorporating industry-based projects, professional mentoring, guest practitioner sessions, workplace simulations, and structured internship experiences into accounting education can help students connect theoretical knowledge with practical professional skills. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, university administrators, employers, professional accounting bodies, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Students may gain stronger workplace competencies and improved employment preparedness, while lecturers may obtain better understanding of the skills demanded by employers. Universities and professional bodies may also use the findings to strengthen partnerships with industry and improve the relevance of accounting education to labour-market requirements. The study recommends that universities should establish and strengthen structured partnerships with accounting firms, businesses, professional bodies, and other relevant organizations. Accounting education programmes should provide students with more opportunities for internships, industry visits, practitioner-led workshops, workplace projects, and professional mentoring. It is concluded that stronger industry-academia collaboration can enhance the development of employability skills among accounting education students and contribute to better preparation for successful participation in the accounting profession.
