Impact of Inventory Management Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Evaluate Business Operational Performance in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the impact of inventory management knowledge on students’ ability to evaluate business operational performance in Nigerian polytechnics. Inventory management knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the principles, methods and techniques used to plan, control, monitor and manage inventory in a business organization. Business operational performance refers to the extent to which a business effectively utilizes its resources to achieve its operational objectives, minimize unnecessary costs, maintain adequate stock levels and ensure smooth business activities. The study was motivated by the importance of inventory management in business operations and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical knowledge that enables them to evaluate how inventory-related activities influence operational outcomes. Poor inventory management may result in excessive stock, stock shortages, unnecessary storage costs, wastage and disruptions in business activities. Students with adequate knowledge of inventory management may therefore be better equipped to understand inventory-related information and use it when assessing operational performance. The study consequently investigated whether inventory management knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to evaluate business operational performance in Nigerian polytechnics. Inventory represents an important component of business resources, particularly in organizations involved in manufacturing, merchandising and other activities requiring the continuous availability of goods and materials. Effective inventory management requires an understanding of stock levels, inventory turnover, ordering decisions, storage, stock control and the costs associated with holding or replenishing inventory. Students who possess knowledge of these areas may be better able to identify whether inventory resources are being managed efficiently and determine how inventory practices affect business operations. Understanding inventory turnover can help students assess how efficiently stock is being utilized, while knowledge of inventory control can enable them to recognize the consequences of excess or insufficient inventory. This knowledge is relevant to Accounting Education students because it connects accounting concepts with practical cost management, resource utilization and operational performance evaluation. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ inventory management knowledge and their ability to evaluate business operational performance. Inventory management knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of inventory planning, stock control, inventory turnover, ordering procedures, storage costs, stock levels and inventory valuation. Students’ ability to evaluate operational performance was considered in terms of their capacity to assess resource utilization, identify operational inefficiencies, evaluate inventory-related costs, examine stock movement and determine the effectiveness of business operations. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that inventory management knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to evaluate business operational performance. Students with adequate knowledge of inventory management may be better able to understand the relationship between inventory levels, business costs and operational efficiency. Knowledge of stock control can help students identify situations where excessive inventory may increase storage and handling costs, while inadequate inventory may result in shortages and interruptions in business activities. Similarly, understanding inventory turnover may enable students to assess how effectively a business converts its inventory into sales and identify possible weaknesses in stock management. These competencies can provide students with a stronger basis for evaluating operational performance and making appropriate judgments about inventory-related business activities. Furthermore, practical exposure to inventory management can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning and decision-making skills. Classroom exercises involving inventory records, stock movement, inventory turnover calculations, stock control problems and realistic business cases can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Students can be required to examine inventory information, identify operational problems and recommend appropriate measures for improving stock management. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing inventory management concepts and develop the ability to interpret inventory information in relation to business performance. Regular practice can also improve students’ ability to identify inefficiencies and understand the operational consequences of different inventory management decisions. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics. Students can benefit from developing practical inventory management knowledge that enables them to evaluate the operational implications of inventory decisions. Lecturers should provide regular exercises involving inventory control, stock analysis, inventory turnover and operational performance evaluation. Accounting departments should also integrate practical inventory management activities into relevant accounting and management accounting courses. Case studies and realistic business scenarios can expose students to situations involving excess stock, stock shortages, storage costs and inventory movement, thereby helping them understand the relationship between inventory management and operational performance. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction on inventory management with practical exercises, business cases and problem-solving activities. Students should be encouraged to develop a clear understanding of inventory control, stock levels, inventory turnover, ordering procedures and inventory-related costs and apply these concepts when evaluating business operations. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical opportunities for students to analyze inventory information and assess operational outcomes. In conclusion, strengthening inventory management knowledge can improve students’ ability to evaluate business operational performance and contribute to stronger analytical reasoning, cost management skills, resource evaluation, decision-making competence, accounting knowledge and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
