Impact of Inventory Write-Down Education on Students’ Understanding of Net Realizable Value in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

This study examined the impact of inventory write-down education on students’ understanding of net realizable value among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Inventory is an important component of current assets and plays a significant role in determining the financial position and performance of an entity. The appropriate measurement of inventory is therefore essential for ensuring that financial statements provide reliable and useful information to users. Net realizable value represents the estimated selling price of inventory in the ordinary course of business less the estimated costs of completion and the costs necessary to make the sale. The comparison of inventory cost with net realizable value is important because inventory may need to be written down when its carrying amount is not recoverable through its sale or use. Consequently, Accounting Education students require adequate knowledge of inventory write-down principles and net realizable value to understand how inventory should be measured and reported in financial statements. However, students may experience difficulties in understanding the meaning of net realizable value, identifying situations that require inventory write-downs, determining the appropriate amount of write-down and distinguishing between inventory cost and net realizable value. These difficulties may affect their ability to correctly apply inventory measurement principles in practical accounting situations. This study therefore examined whether inventory write-down education significantly improves students’ understanding of net realizable value. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ exposure to inventory write-down education and their understanding of net realizable value. The instrument covered relevant areas including the meaning and purpose of inventory write-downs, inventory measurement, determination of net realizable value, estimated selling price, costs of completion, costs necessary to make the sale, recognition of inventory write-downs and the accounting treatment of inventory losses. Students’ understanding of net realizable value was assessed based on their ability to identify the components used in its determination, calculate or estimate the value where appropriate, compare net realizable value with inventory cost and determine the appropriate treatment when inventory requires a write-down. The instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while a reliability procedure was conducted to establish its consistency before administration to the respondents. Data collected were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether inventory write-down education has a significant impact on students’ understanding of net realizable value. The study specifically sought to establish whether adequate education on inventory write-down procedures enables students to understand the principles and calculations involved in determining the amount at which inventory should be reported. The study is expected to establish that effective inventory write-down education can improve students’ understanding of net realizable value. Adequate exposure to inventory measurement concepts may enable students to understand that inventory should not be reported at an amount exceeding the amount expected to be realized from its sale. It may also improve students’ ability to identify the relevant factors used in determining net realizable value and understand how changes in selling prices, completion costs and selling costs can affect the measurement of inventory. A sound understanding of net realizable value is important because inappropriate inventory measurement can result in the overstatement of assets and profit and consequently affect the reliability of financial statements. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, curriculum planners, polytechnic management and other stakeholders in accounting education. For students, the study may emphasize the importance of understanding inventory measurement concepts beyond memorizing accounting definitions and procedures. A strong understanding of net realizable value can assist students in analyzing inventory-related transactions, solving accounting problems and applying relevant financial reporting requirements. For accounting lecturers, the findings may provide useful information on students’ level of understanding of inventory write-downs and identify areas where additional instructional attention is required. The findings may also encourage lecturers to use practical examples, worked calculations, case studies and financial reporting exercises when teaching inventory measurement and net realizable value. The study will also be relevant to curriculum planners and administrators of Nigerian polytechnics. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening the treatment of inventory valuation, write-downs and net realizable value within Accounting Education programmes. Accounting curricula should provide students with adequate opportunities to understand the principles underlying inventory measurement and apply them to realistic financial reporting situations. Polytechnic management may further support effective teaching by providing current accounting standards, textbooks, professional publications, digital learning resources and other instructional materials that reflect contemporary financial reporting requirements. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of practical and application-based instruction in teaching net realizable value. Students should be exposed to practical situations involving damaged, obsolete, slow-moving or declining-value inventory and be required to determine whether a write-down is necessary. Classroom exercises may involve calculating net realizable value by considering estimated selling prices, costs of completion and costs necessary to make the sale. Students can then compare the resulting amount with inventory cost and determine the appropriate accounting treatment. Such activities can strengthen their computational, analytical and decision-making abilities while helping them connect theoretical concepts with practical financial reporting situations. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Accounting Education programmes in Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen the teaching of inventory write-downs and net realizable value through a combination of theoretical explanations and practical applications. Accounting lecturers should provide students with regular exercises involving inventory valuation, determination of net realizable value and recognition of inventory write-downs. Students should also be encouraged to engage in financial statement analysis, case studies and practical accounting problems that require the application of inventory measurement principles. Polytechnics should provide adequate and up-to-date instructional resources to support the effective teaching and learning of inventory accounting and related financial reporting concepts. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of inventory write-down education in developing students’ understanding of net realizable value among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Effective education on inventory write-downs can provide students with the conceptual knowledge and practical skills required to determine net realizable value, assess whether inventory requires a write-down and understand the financial reporting implications of inventory measurement. Strengthening inventory write-down education through practical, conceptual and application-based teaching approaches can therefore contribute to improved accounting knowledge and better preparation of Accounting Education students for future academic and professional responsibilities.
