Impact of Lecturer Assessment Techniques on Students’ Achievement in Management Accounting in Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the impact of lecturer assessment techniques on students’ achievement in Management Accounting in Nigeria. Assessment is an essential component of the teaching and learning process because it provides a systematic means of determining the extent to which students have acquired the knowledge, skills and competencies specified in an academic programme. In Management Accounting, assessment is particularly important because students are expected to develop both conceptual understanding and practical abilities in areas such as cost classification, cost behaviour, budgeting, marginal costing, standard costing, variance analysis, cost-volume-profit analysis, decision-making and performance evaluation. Lecturer assessment techniques refer to the various methods and procedures employed by lecturers to evaluate students’ learning and academic progress, including tests, assignments, quizzes, examinations, practical exercises, case studies, problem-solving tasks, presentations and other forms of classroom assessment. Students’ achievement in Management Accounting refers to the level of academic performance demonstrated by students through their understanding and application of Management Accounting concepts, principles, procedures and techniques. This study therefore investigated whether lecturer assessment techniques have a significant impact on students’ achievement in Management Accounting in Nigeria. The study was motivated by concerns regarding students’ varying levels of achievement in Management Accounting and the possible influence of assessment practices on learning outcomes. Management Accounting is a highly applied accounting discipline that requires students to understand quantitative information, perform calculations, analyze cost and revenue relationships, interpret accounting data and make appropriate decisions based on financial information. Consequently, the techniques lecturers use to assess students may influence how students approach learning and prepare for academic tasks. Assessment techniques that emphasize only memorization may provide limited opportunities for students to demonstrate their ability to apply Management Accounting knowledge. In contrast, assessment techniques involving computational exercises, practical problems, case studies and analytical questions may encourage students to develop deeper understanding and stronger problem-solving abilities. The study therefore considered lecturer assessment techniques as an important factor that may influence students’ achievement in Management Accounting. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised students offering Management Accounting courses in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on lecturer assessment techniques and students’ achievement in Management Accounting. The assessment techniques examined included continuous assessment, class tests, assignments, quizzes, practical exercises, computational problems, case-based assessment, essay questions, objective tests and semester examinations. Students’ achievement was considered in relation to their understanding of Management Accounting concepts, ability to perform calculations, application of costing techniques, interpretation of accounting information, problem-solving ability and academic performance in Management Accounting courses. The research instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education, Accounting and related fields to ensure that the items adequately represented the variables under investigation. A reliability procedure was also conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before its administration to the respondents. Data obtained from the respondents were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from the respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was employed to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether lecturer assessment techniques have a statistically significant impact on students’ achievement in Management Accounting. The study is expected to establish that lecturer assessment techniques have a significant impact on students’ achievement in Management Accounting. Different assessment techniques provide students with different opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Objective tests may be useful for assessing students’ knowledge of concepts and principles, while computational questions may provide opportunities to demonstrate their ability to apply Management Accounting procedures. Practical exercises and case studies may further require students to analyze realistic business situations, identify relevant information and apply appropriate Management Accounting techniques. A balanced combination of assessment techniques may therefore provide a more comprehensive evaluation of students’ achievement. The study further recognizes that assessment techniques can influence students’ learning behaviour. When students are assessed regularly through quizzes, assignments, class exercises and practical problems, they may be encouraged to study consistently throughout the academic period rather than concentrating entirely on final examinations. Frequent assessment can also help students identify areas of difficulty and seek assistance before such weaknesses affect their overall academic achievement. Where assessment activities require students to apply knowledge to practical problems, students may be encouraged to focus on understanding concepts and procedures rather than relying exclusively on memorization. Practical assessment is particularly relevant to Management Accounting because of the applied nature of the discipline. Students are expected to use accounting information to support planning, cost control, budgeting and managerial decision-making. Assessment techniques that require students to solve realistic business problems can provide opportunities for them to demonstrate these abilities. For example, students may be required to prepare budgets, calculate variances, determine contribution margins, analyze cost behaviour or evaluate alternative business decisions. Such activities can help students connect theoretical knowledge with practical accounting applications and may contribute to stronger academic achievement. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students because they may increase awareness of the importance of participating actively in different forms of assessment. Students may be encouraged to approach assignments, quizzes, practical exercises and examinations as opportunities to strengthen their understanding of Management Accounting. Regular engagement with different assessment formats can help students become familiar with various ways of presenting accounting problems and develop the ability to apply knowledge to both familiar and unfamiliar situations. Students may also identify their academic weaknesses earlier and take corrective measures before major examinations. The findings will also be beneficial to Management Accounting lecturers in Nigeria. The study may provide lecturers with information about the relationship between assessment techniques and students’ achievement. Lecturers may use the findings to review the effectiveness of their existing assessment practices and adopt techniques that provide adequate opportunities for students to demonstrate different aspects of Management Accounting competence. Lecturers may combine objective questions, computational exercises, assignments, case studies, practical tasks and analytical questions according to the learning objectives of individual courses. The study will further be relevant to curriculum planners and educational administrators. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening assessment practices within Management Accounting programmes. Curriculum planners should ensure that assessment methods are aligned with the knowledge, skills and competencies expected from students. Since Management Accounting requires both conceptual and quantitative competence, assessment should provide opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding, application, analysis, computation and problem-solving. Universities and other tertiary institutions should also encourage assessment practices that support continuous learning and practical competence. Another important aspect of lecturer assessment techniques is the provision of feedback. Assessment becomes more useful when students receive timely and constructive information about their performance. In Management Accounting, feedback can help students identify errors in calculations, understand why a particular costing procedure is appropriate and recognize areas where their reasoning needs improvement. Lecturers should therefore provide clear explanations of students’ errors and guide them toward appropriate solutions. Effective feedback can help students learn from their mistakes and improve their performance in subsequent assessment activities. The study also highlights the importance of fairness and consistency in assessment. Assessment techniques should be applied in a manner that is clear, transparent and consistent with the objectives of the course. Students should understand the expectations associated with assignments, tests, practical exercises and examinations. Assessment criteria should also be communicated clearly where appropriate. Fair and consistent assessment practices can help students prepare effectively and may improve their confidence in the assessment process. Technology-supported assessment may also provide additional opportunities for improving Management Accounting learning. Digital learning platforms can facilitate online quizzes, electronic assignments, computer-based examinations and other assessment activities. Spreadsheet exercises and accounting software can also be incorporated into practical assessment where appropriate, allowing students to work with numerical and financial information in ways that resemble contemporary accounting practice. However, technological assessment should remain focused on the intended learning outcomes and should not introduce technical difficulties that are unrelated to students’ Management Accounting competence. The study may also have implications for the frequency and timing of assessment. Assessment that is appropriately distributed throughout a semester can provide students with repeated opportunities to practice and demonstrate their knowledge. Excessive assessment may create unnecessary academic pressure, while inadequate assessment may provide insufficient information about students’ learning progress. Lecturers should therefore adopt assessment schedules that provide meaningful opportunities for learning, practice and feedback without unnecessarily overburdening students. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that lecturers in Nigerian tertiary institutions should adopt varied and appropriately structured assessment techniques in Management Accounting. Assessment should include a suitable combination of objective questions, computational exercises, assignments, practical activities, case studies, analytical questions and examinations. The choice of technique should be determined by the learning objectives and the particular competencies students are expected to develop. The study further recommends that Management Accounting lecturers should increase the use of practical and application-based assessment activities. Students should regularly be given opportunities to solve realistic costing and managerial accounting problems involving budgeting, cost analysis, variance analysis, decision-making and performance evaluation. Lecturers should also provide timely and constructive feedback that helps students understand their errors and improve their subsequent performance. Universities and other tertiary institutions should support lecturers through professional development programmes on contemporary assessment techniques, question construction, practical assessment and effective feedback. Curriculum planners should ensure that assessment requirements are properly aligned with Management Accounting course objectives and that students are assessed on both theoretical understanding and practical application. Institutions should also provide appropriate technological and instructional resources to support modern assessment practices. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of lecturer assessment techniques in influencing students’ achievement in Management Accounting in Nigeria. Assessment techniques determine, to a considerable extent, the opportunities students have to demonstrate their knowledge, computational skills, analytical abilities and capacity to apply Management Accounting concepts to practical problems. Varied, relevant and well-structured assessment techniques can encourage consistent learning, provide useful feedback and support the development of practical accounting competence. Strengthening lecturer assessment practices through appropriate assessment methods, practical exercises, clear assessment standards, timely feedback and technology-supported activities can therefore contribute to improved achievement in Management Accounting and better preparation of students for future accounting and managerial responsibilities.
