Impact of Liquidity Analysis Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Assess Business Financial Position in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
This study examined the impact of liquidity analysis knowledge on students’ ability to assess business financial position in Nigerian polytechnics. Liquidity analysis knowledge refers to students’ understanding of liquidity concepts, measures, ratios and techniques used to determine the ability of a business to meet its short-term financial obligations. The ability to assess business financial position involves students’ capacity to examine financial information and determine the financial strength, stability and short-term financial condition of a business. The study was motivated by the importance of liquidity analysis in financial statement interpretation and the need for accounting students to develop practical skills for evaluating business financial information. Some students may understand liquidity ratios theoretically but experience difficulties when interpreting liquidity results and relating them to the financial position of a business. The study therefore investigated whether liquidity analysis knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to assess business financial position in Nigerian polytechnics. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ liquidity analysis knowledge and their ability to assess business financial position. Liquidity analysis knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of current assets, current liabilities, working capital and liquidity ratios, while the ability to assess financial position was considered in terms of students’ capacity to interpret financial information, evaluate short-term financial strength, identify financial weaknesses and determine the ability of a business to meet its current obligations. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that liquidity analysis knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to assess business financial position. Students with adequate knowledge of liquidity analysis may be better able to understand the relationship between current assets and current liabilities and determine the short-term financial strength of a business. Knowledge of liquidity ratios can help students interpret financial information, compare business results and identify whether a business has sufficient resources to meet its short-term obligations. It may also enable students to recognize potential liquidity problems and understand their possible implications for business operations and financial stability. Furthermore, practical exposure to liquidity analysis can strengthen students’ analytical and decision-making skills. Classroom exercises involving financial statements, liquidity ratios, working capital calculations and business cases can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic financial situations. Regular practice can help students move beyond memorizing formulas and develop the ability to interpret liquidity results and explain what they indicate about the financial position of a business. The findings will be useful to accounting students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics. Lecturers should provide regular practical exercises that require students to calculate, interpret and apply liquidity measures using realistic financial information. Accounting departments should also integrate liquidity analysis and financial statement interpretation into relevant accounting courses and assessments. Students should be encouraged to develop both computational and interpretative knowledge of liquidity analysis. The study concludes that strengthening liquidity analysis knowledge can improve students’ ability to assess business financial position and contribute to stronger financial analysis, analytical skills, decision-making ability, accounting competence and professional preparedness.
