Impact of Marginal Costing Knowledge on Students’ Short-Term Business Decision-Making Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

This study examined the impact of marginal costing knowledge on students’ short-term business decision-making skills in Nigerian universities. Marginal costing knowledge refers to students’ understanding of the relationship between variable costs, fixed costs, contribution and profit, as well as their ability to apply marginal costing techniques in evaluating short-term business alternatives. Short-term business decision-making skills involve the ability to analyze available financial information, compare alternatives, identify relevant costs and revenues, and select appropriate courses of action within a limited period. The study was motivated by the importance of marginal costing in managerial decision-making and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical skills that enable them to apply accounting information when making short-term business decisions. Students who possess adequate knowledge of marginal costing may be better equipped to understand the financial implications of decisions involving pricing, production levels, special orders, product selection and the use of available resources. The study therefore investigated whether marginal costing knowledge has a significant impact on students’ short-term business decision-making skills in Nigerian universities. Marginal costing provides useful information for separating variable costs from fixed costs and determining the contribution generated by business activities. Knowledge of contribution, marginal cost and relevant costs can help students understand which financial information should be considered when evaluating short-term alternatives. Students who understand these concepts may be better able to determine the effects of changes in production volume, selling prices and variable costs on business results. Marginal costing knowledge can also help students recognize that not all accounting costs are relevant to every short-term decision. This understanding is important because effective decision-making requires attention to costs and revenues that are directly affected by the decision being considered. For Accounting Education students, developing this competence can strengthen their ability to connect management accounting principles with practical business situations. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ marginal costing knowledge and short-term business decision-making skills. Marginal costing knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of variable costs, fixed costs, contribution, marginal cost, contribution-to-sales relationships and relevant cost information. Short-term business decision-making skills were considered in terms of students’ ability to evaluate alternative courses of action, assess special orders, make short-term pricing decisions, determine product priorities, evaluate make-or-buy situations and allocate limited resources. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that marginal costing knowledge has a significant impact on students’ short-term business decision-making skills. Students with adequate knowledge of marginal costing may be better able to identify the financial information that is relevant to a particular decision and distinguish it from costs that are not affected by the decision. Knowledge of contribution can help students assess the financial effect of accepting additional orders, changing production levels or selecting between alternative products. Similarly, understanding variable and fixed costs can enable students to evaluate how changes in activity levels may affect business costs and profitability. These competencies can provide students with a stronger basis for making logical and financially informed short-term decisions.  Furthermore, practical exposure to marginal costing can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Classroom exercises involving special-order decisions, product-mix decisions, make-or-buy alternatives, limiting-factor situations and short-term pricing problems can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic business situations. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing marginal costing concepts and develop the ability to interpret financial information and justify their decisions. Regular practice can also improve students’ confidence in evaluating alternatives and recognizing the financial consequences of different short-term decisions. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian universities. Students can benefit from developing practical knowledge of marginal costing and understanding how it can be applied to short-term business decisions. Lecturers should provide realistic business cases and practical exercises that require students to identify relevant costs, calculate contribution and evaluate alternative decisions. Accounting departments should also integrate marginal costing applications into relevant management accounting courses and assessments. This approach can help students develop practical competencies that extend beyond theoretical knowledge and prepare them for accounting, financial and managerial responsibilities. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction on marginal costing with practical problem-solving activities, case studies and decision-making exercises. Students should be encouraged to develop a clear understanding of variable costs, fixed costs, contribution and relevant costs and apply these concepts to realistic business situations. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical learning opportunities that expose students to different short-term decision-making scenarios. In conclusion, strengthening marginal costing knowledge can improve students’ short-term business decision-making skills and contribute to stronger analytical reasoning, cost analysis, financial interpretation, problem-solving ability, accounting competence and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities.
