Impact of Non-Current Asset Revaluation Education on Students’ Understanding of Asset Measurement in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

This study examined the impact of non-current asset revaluation education on students’ understanding of asset measurement in Nigerian universities. Non-current assets constitute an important component of the financial position of an entity and include property, plant and equipment and other long-term assets held for use in business operations. The measurement of these assets is an important aspect of financial reporting because the amounts reported in financial statements can influence the understanding and decisions of users of financial information. Non-current asset revaluation involves the reassessment of the carrying amount of an asset to reflect its appropriate current value in accordance with applicable financial reporting requirements. Therefore, Accounting students need to understand the principles, procedures and accounting treatments associated with asset revaluation in order to develop adequate competence in financial reporting. However, students may experience difficulties in understanding the difference between historical cost measurement and revaluation, determining the appropriate treatment of revaluation gains or losses, and understanding the effect of revaluation on the carrying amount of non-current assets and related financial statement items. These difficulties may affect their overall understanding of asset measurement. This study therefore examined whether education on non-current asset revaluation can significantly improve students’ understanding of asset measurement. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of the study comprised Accounting students in selected Nigerian universities. A representative sample was selected from the population using an appropriate sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured research instrument designed to obtain information on students’ exposure to non-current asset revaluation education and their understanding of asset measurement. The instrument covered relevant areas including the meaning and purpose of non-current asset revaluation, the revaluation model, determination of revalued amounts, treatment of increases and decreases arising from revaluation, accounting entries associated with revaluation, and the presentation of revalued assets in financial statements. Students’ understanding of asset measurement was assessed based on their ability to explain, distinguish and apply relevant measurement principles to practical accounting situations. The instrument was subjected to appropriate validation procedures by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while a reliability procedure was conducted to establish the consistency of the instrument before administration. Data collected were organized, coded and analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize the responses obtained from respondents. An appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the stated research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The analysis focused on determining whether non-current asset revaluation education has a significant impact on students’ understanding of asset measurement. The study specifically examined whether adequate exposure to revaluation concepts enables students to understand how the carrying amounts of non-current assets may be determined and reported under relevant financial reporting requirements. The study is expected to establish that effective non-current asset revaluation education can improve students’ understanding of asset measurement. Adequate knowledge of revaluation may enable students to distinguish between the cost model and revaluation model and understand the circumstances under which revaluation may be applied. It may also improve their ability to determine appropriate accounting treatments for changes in the carrying amounts of non-current assets and understand how such changes affect financial statements. A clear understanding of asset revaluation is important because students need to develop the ability to apply accounting principles to practical financial reporting situations rather than relying solely on memorization of accounting procedures. The findings of the study will be useful to Accounting students, accounting lecturers, university management, curriculum planners and other stakeholders in accounting education. For Accounting students, the study may emphasize the importance of understanding the principles underlying asset measurement and revaluation. A strong understanding of these concepts can assist students in solving accounting problems, analyzing financial statements and applying relevant financial reporting requirements. For accounting lecturers, the findings may provide useful information on students’ level of understanding of non-current asset revaluation and may encourage the adoption of more practical teaching methods. Lecturers can use worked examples, financial statement analysis, case studies and classroom exercises to demonstrate the application of revaluation principles. The study will also be relevant to curriculum planners and university administrators. The findings may provide a basis for strengthening the treatment of non-current asset measurement and revaluation within accounting education programmes. Accounting curricula should provide students with adequate opportunities to study the theoretical principles of asset measurement while also applying those principles to realistic financial reporting situations. Universities may further support effective learning by providing current accounting standards, textbooks, professional publications, digital learning materials and other instructional resources that reflect contemporary financial reporting requirements. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of practical instruction in teaching non-current asset revaluation. Students should be exposed to practical scenarios involving the initial recognition of non-current assets, subsequent measurement, revaluation, depreciation after revaluation and the accounting treatment of changes in asset values. These activities can help students understand the relationship between asset measurement and financial statement presentation. They can also strengthen students’ analytical and problem-solving abilities and improve their confidence in handling asset measurement questions. Based on the expected findings, the study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen the teaching of non-current asset revaluation through a combination of conceptual explanations and practical exercises. Accounting lecturers should provide students with regular opportunities to calculate revalued amounts, prepare relevant accounting entries and examine the effects of revaluation on financial statements. Students should also be encouraged to study relevant accounting standards and participate in practical financial reporting activities. Universities should provide current instructional materials and resources to support effective teaching and learning of asset measurement and revaluation concepts. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of non-current asset revaluation education in developing students’ understanding of asset measurement in Nigerian universities. Effective education on revaluation can provide Accounting students with the conceptual knowledge and practical skills required to understand changes in the measurement and carrying amounts of non-current assets. Strengthening the teaching of non-current asset revaluation through practical, conceptual and application-based approaches can therefore contribute to improved financial reporting knowledge and better preparation of Accounting students for future academic and professional responsibilities.
