Impact of Performance Measurement Exercises on Students’ Business Performance Evaluation Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Performance measurement is an important component of accounting and management education because it equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to assess how effectively and efficiently businesses achieve their financial and operational objectives. Accounting education students need practical competence in selecting appropriate performance indicators, analysing financial and non-financial measures, comparing actual performance with established targets, identifying performance gaps, and formulating evidence-based recommendations for improving organizational performance. However, students may experience difficulties evaluating business performance when instruction focuses mainly on theoretical concepts without sufficient opportunities to work with realistic organizational data and performance reports. Performance Measurement Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to analyse key performance indicators, financial ratios, budget variances, productivity measures, profitability indicators, efficiency measures, customer-related indicators, and other performance information used to evaluate business outcomes. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of performance measurement exercises on students' business performance evaluation skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Performance Measurement Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical performance measurement exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, prior knowledge, problem-solving, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Performance Measurement Theory emphasizes the use of appropriate financial and non-financial measures to assess organizational performance, identify deviations from objectives, and support managerial improvement. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how performance measurement exercises may influence students' business performance evaluation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Performance measurement exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of key performance indicators, financial performance measures, non-financial performance measures, profitability analysis, liquidity analysis, efficiency analysis, productivity measurement, return on investment, return on assets, return on equity, residual income, economic value added where applicable, budget performance analysis, variance analysis, cost efficiency, revenue performance, asset utilization, employee productivity, customer-related measures, quality measures, benchmarking, trend analysis, balanced performance perspectives, divisional performance evaluation, responsibility accounting, target setting, performance comparison, performance-report interpretation, realistic business cases, performance measurement simulations, spreadsheet-based analysis, group problem-solving, individual exercises, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' business performance evaluation skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to select appropriate performance measures, calculate and interpret performance indicators, analyse profitability, assess liquidity and efficiency, evaluate productivity, interpret return-based measures, compare actual performance with targets, analyse budget and operational variances, identify performance gaps, evaluate departmental or divisional performance, compare current performance with historical or benchmark information, integrate financial and non-financial indicators, identify factors affecting business performance, interpret performance reports, evaluate organizational strengths and weaknesses, formulate evidence-based conclusions, recommend appropriate improvement strategies, communicate performance findings, and apply performance evaluation techniques to unfamiliar business situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized business performance evaluation skills tests, practical performance measurement tasks, organizational performance case studies, performance-report interpretation exercises, benchmarking activities, spreadsheet-based exercises, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to performance measurement exercises, practical management accounting experiences, and levels of business performance evaluation skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of performance measurement exercises on students' business performance evaluation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, business performance evaluation skill scores before and after exposure to performance measurement exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional management accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that performance measurement exercises have a significant positive impact on students' business performance evaluation skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical performance measurement exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to calculate and interpret performance indicators, compare actual results with targets, identify performance gaps, analyse organizational strengths and weaknesses, and formulate appropriate recommendations than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical profitability and efficiency analysis may help students understand how financial measures can be used to evaluate organizational performance. Budget and variance analysis exercises may strengthen students' ability to identify deviations from planned performance and investigate their causes. Productivity and asset-utilization exercises may improve students' ability to assess how efficiently organizational resources are being used. Benchmarking and trend analysis may help students compare performance across periods, departments, or comparable organizations. Exercises incorporating both financial and non-financial measures may strengthen students' ability to develop a more comprehensive evaluation of business performance rather than relying solely on accounting figures. Performance measurement simulations may further improve students' ability to interpret performance reports and make evidence-based recommendations. Spreadsheet-based performance analysis may enhance students' ability to organize performance data, calculate indicators, identify trends, and present analytical findings efficiently. However, inadequate access to realistic business data, limited spreadsheet and accounting software, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty integrating multiple performance indicators may reduce the effectiveness of performance measurement exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised performance measurement exercises to contribute significantly to improved business performance evaluation skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on performance measurement exercises, business performance evaluation skills, accounting education, management accounting education, performance measurement, key performance indicators, benchmarking, responsibility accounting, experiential learning, constructivist learning, performance measurement theory, practical accounting skills, managerial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical management accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating performance measurement exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic business performance cases and simulations, strengthening students' ability to interpret financial and non-financial performance indicators, incorporating benchmarking and trend analysis into instruction, using spreadsheet-based performance measurement tools, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, training accounting educators in contemporary performance evaluation techniques, developing competency-based business performance evaluation assessments, and aligning accounting education with the practical performance measurement competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
