Impact of Personal Cash-Flow Tracking on Financial Management Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Personal cash-flow tracking is an important practical financial-management activity that enables individuals to monitor income, expenditure, savings, and available cash balances. For Accounting Education students, developing the ability to track and analyse personal cash flows may strengthen practical understanding of budgeting, expenditure control, financial planning, saving behaviour, and responsible financial decision-making. However, some students may have limited practical experience in systematically recording and reviewing their personal financial transactions, which may affect their ability to apply financial-management principles effectively. Personal Cash-Flow Tracking provides students with an opportunity to record income and expenditure, categorize financial transactions, prepare personal cash-flow statements, monitor spending patterns, identify financial gaps, and make informed financial decisions. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Personal Cash-Flow Tracking on financial management skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical financial competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, self-regulation, feedback, self-efficacy, and behavioural reinforcement. Human Capital Theory explains how the development of relevant knowledge and practical financial skills can improve students' productivity, employability, financial competence, and preparedness for future professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Personal Cash-Flow Tracking may influence financial management skills among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial-management skills assessment scales, personal cash-flow tracking templates, budgeting exercises, practical financial-management tasks, performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Personal Cash-Flow Tracking will be assessed using indicators such as income identification, income recording, salary recording, allowance recording, business-income recording, casual-income recording, gift-income recording, scholarship-income recording, other-income recording, expenditure identification, expenditure recording, food-expense recording, transportation-expense recording, accommodation-expense recording, communication-expense recording, educational-expense recording, healthcare-expense recording, entertainment-expense recording, personal-care expense recording, utility-expense recording, subscription-expense recording, shopping-expense recording, debt-payment recording, savings recording, investment recording, emergency-expense recording, financial-support recording, transaction-date recording, transaction-description recording, amount recording, payment-method recording, cash-payment recording, electronic-payment recording, bank-transfer recording, mobile-payment recording, transaction categorization, fixed-expense identification, variable-expense identification, essential-expense identification, non-essential-expense identification, recurring-expense identification, one-time-expense identification, spending classification, cash-balance calculation, opening-balance recording, closing-balance calculation, daily cash-flow recording, weekly cash-flow recording, monthly cash-flow recording, cash-inflow tracking, cash-outflow tracking, net-cash-flow calculation, positive-cash-flow identification, negative-cash-flow identification, cash-flow variance identification, expenditure comparison, spending-pattern analysis, expenditure monitoring, income monitoring, savings monitoring, budget preparation, budget implementation, budget review, spending-limit establishment, financial-goal setting, emergency-fund planning, savings planning, debt-management planning, financial-priority setting, financial forecasting, financial decision-making, financial record keeping, receipt preservation, transaction verification, financial-data accuracy, record updating, document organization, spreadsheet-based cash-flow tracking, mobile financial-record tracking, digital budgeting, financial-management applications, digital transaction monitoring, financial-data security, password protection, privacy awareness, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, repeated practice, self-monitoring, peer assessment, lecturer feedback, reflective activities, and progressively challenging financial-management scenarios. Students' financial-management skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify sources of income, record income accurately, classify income appropriately, record different forms of expenditure, categorize expenses correctly, distinguish essential from non-essential expenditure, identify fixed and variable expenses, distinguish recurring and one-time expenses, calculate cash balances, determine opening and closing balances, monitor daily and monthly cash flows, calculate net cash flow, identify positive and negative cash-flow positions, monitor expenditure, compare actual spending with planned spending, identify spending patterns, prepare personal budgets, implement budgets, review budgets, establish spending limits, set financial goals, plan savings, establish emergency funds, manage debts, establish financial priorities, forecast future cash requirements, make appropriate financial decisions, maintain accurate financial records, preserve transaction evidence, verify financial information, update records, organize financial documents, use spreadsheets for cash-flow tracking, use digital financial-management tools, monitor electronic transactions, protect financial information, maintain confidentiality, demonstrate financial discipline, demonstrate numerical competence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate planning ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate self-control, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate digital competence, and demonstrate overall financial-management competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, personal financial-management practices, cash-flow tracking activities, and financial-management skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Personal Cash-Flow Tracking on students' financial-management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial-management skill scores before and after participation in cash-flow tracking activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Personal Cash-Flow Tracking has a significant positive impact on financial-management skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to systematic cash-flow tracking are expected to demonstrate improved ability to record, classify, monitor, analyse, and manage their personal financial activities. Income-identification and recording exercises may improve students' awareness of their available financial resources. Expenditure-recording activities may strengthen students' understanding of how money is spent across different categories. Expense-classification activities may improve students' ability to distinguish essential and non-essential spending. Fixed- and variable-expense activities may strengthen students' understanding of different expenditure patterns. Cash-balance calculations may improve students' ability to determine available funds. Daily, weekly, and monthly tracking activities may strengthen students' ability to monitor financial movements over time. Cash-inflow and cash-outflow monitoring may improve students' understanding of the relationship between income and expenditure. Net-cash-flow calculations may strengthen students' ability to determine whether their financial position is positive or negative. Spending-pattern analysis may improve students' ability to identify unnecessary or excessive expenditure. Budget-preparation and implementation activities may strengthen students' ability to plan and control spending. Budget-review activities may improve students' ability to compare planned and actual expenditure. Spending-limit activities may encourage greater expenditure discipline. Financial-goal-setting exercises may strengthen students' ability to establish realistic financial objectives. Savings-planning activities may improve students' ability to allocate available funds toward future needs. Emergency-fund planning may strengthen students' preparedness for unexpected expenses. Debt-management activities may improve students' ability to monitor and prioritize financial obligations. Financial-priority activities may strengthen students' ability to make informed choices when resources are limited. Financial-forecasting exercises may improve students' ability to anticipate future cash requirements. Practical tracking may also strengthen students' awareness of their financial behaviour and encourage more responsible financial decision-making. Spreadsheet and digital cash-flow tracking activities may improve students' ability to use technology for personal financial management. However, the effectiveness of Personal Cash-Flow Tracking may be constrained by irregular income, limited financial resources, poor record-keeping habits, low student participation, inadequate access to digital financial-management tools, limited financial literacy, privacy concerns, inconsistent tracking, inaccurate transaction records, lack of practical supervision, limited time, and weak integration of personal financial-management activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects systematic, practical, continuous, and well-supervised Personal Cash-Flow Tracking to contribute significantly to improved financial-management skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Personal Cash-Flow Tracking, financial-management skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical financial education, personal finance, cash-flow management, budgeting, expenditure monitoring, savings management, debt management, financial planning, financial decision-making, financial record keeping, digital financial management, spreadsheet-based financial tracking, financial literacy, financial discipline, student financial management, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, financial-education practitioners, financial institutions, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' practical financial-management competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Personal Cash-Flow Tracking activities into Accounting Education programmes, providing practical financial-tracking templates and digital tools, strengthening students' budgeting and expenditure-monitoring skills, incorporating savings and debt-management activities into practical instruction, providing repeated financial-management exercises and structured feedback, improving students' digital financial-management competence, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with practical personal-finance and financial-management requirements in Nigeria.
