Impact of Practical Accounting Consultancy Training on Students’ Readiness to Provide Basic Accounting Services in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Practical accounting consultancy training refers to structured learning experiences that prepare students to provide basic accounting-related assistance to individuals, businesses, and organizations, while readiness to provide basic accounting services represents students’ preparedness to perform routine accounting tasks accurately, responsibly, and professionally. Practical consultancy training is important in accounting education because students need opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to real or realistic accounting problems before entering professional practice. However, limited practical exposure may leave students with theoretical knowledge without sufficient confidence and ability to provide basic accounting services. This study therefore examines the impact of practical accounting consultancy training on students’ readiness to provide basic accounting services in Nigerian polytechnics. Practical accounting consultancy training may involve supervised accounting assignments, business advisory exercises, client-based case studies, financial record-keeping activities, preparation of basic financial reports, bookkeeping practice, tax-related exercises, accounting software training, and practical problem-solving activities. Through these experiences, students can learn how to identify clients’ basic accounting needs, organize financial information, maintain appropriate records, prepare relevant accounting documents, and communicate accounting information clearly. Such training can provide students with opportunities to apply accounting concepts in situations that resemble actual consultancy and business environments. Readiness to provide basic accounting services involves students’ ability to perform routine bookkeeping, prepare basic financial records, organize accounting information, use relevant accounting tools, identify simple accounting problems, communicate with clients, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate professional responsibility. Practical accounting consultancy training can strengthen these abilities by giving students opportunities to practise accounting tasks and respond to realistic client and business situations. Students who receive meaningful consultancy-oriented training may therefore develop greater confidence and competence in providing basic accounting services. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to practical accounting consultancy training and their readiness to provide basic accounting services. The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at an appropriate level of significance. The study is expected to establish that practical accounting consultancy training has a significant positive impact on students’ readiness to provide basic accounting services. Students who receive greater exposure to practical consultancy activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities in bookkeeping, financial record preparation, accounting information management, client communication, problem-solving, and the use of accounting technologies. The findings may further indicate that practical consultancy experiences help students develop greater confidence in applying accounting knowledge to real business situations. The findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education in polytechnics. Greater emphasis on practical consultancy training may encourage lecturers to integrate client-based cases, simulated consultancy assignments, practical bookkeeping exercises, business advisory activities, and accounting software applications into classroom instruction. These activities can help students move beyond theoretical understanding and develop practical abilities that can be applied in small businesses and other organizational settings. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, polytechnic administrators, employers, accounting practitioners, small business owners, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and educational policymakers. Students may gain stronger practical skills and greater confidence in providing basic accounting services, while lecturers and institutions may obtain useful information for improving practice-oriented accounting education. Small businesses and other organizations may also benefit from graduates who are better prepared to provide appropriate basic accounting assistance. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen practical accounting consultancy training through supervised consultancy projects, client-based case studies, bookkeeping assignments, financial record preparation, accounting software exercises, and practical business advisory activities. Institutions should also encourage collaboration between accounting departments, practicing accountants, businesses, and relevant professional organizations to provide students with realistic consultancy experiences. Regular assessment of students’ practical performance should be conducted to ensure that they develop the competencies required to provide basic accounting services responsibly. The study concludes that effective practical accounting consultancy training can significantly improve students’ readiness to provide basic accounting services and strengthen the practical relevance of accounting education in Nigerian polytechnics.
