Impact of Professional Accounting Competence on the Employability of Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Professional accounting competence refers to the knowledge, practical skills, professional abilities, and work-related capabilities required to perform accounting duties effectively, while employability refers to the ability of accounting education students to obtain, perform, and sustain employment by demonstrating relevant knowledge, skills, adaptability, communication, and professional capabilities. The growing expectations of employers for accounting graduates who can combine accounting knowledge with practical and professional skills have increased the importance of professional competence in accounting education. However, some accounting education students may possess theoretical knowledge without having sufficient professional competencies required for employment. Therefore, this study examines the impact of professional accounting competence on the employability of accounting education students in Nigeria. Professional accounting competence encompasses knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, auditing, taxation, accounting information systems, ethical practices, problem-solving, professional communication, and the practical application of accounting knowledge. It also includes the ability to perform accounting tasks accurately, interpret financial information, use relevant accounting technologies, and demonstrate appropriate professional conduct. Developing these competencies through accounting education, practical exercises, professional training, and workplace-related learning experiences can prepare students for the demands of the accounting profession and other related employment opportunities. Employability of accounting education students involves their capacity to demonstrate the skills and attributes valued by employers and to adapt effectively to workplace requirements. It may be reflected in students’ job-related knowledge, communication skills, problem-solving ability, digital competence, teamwork, adaptability, and confidence in performing professional tasks. Professional accounting competence can contribute to employability by giving students practical capabilities that complement their academic qualifications. Students who possess stronger professional accounting competence may therefore be better positioned to demonstrate their suitability for entry-level accounting and related positions. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise accounting education students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure professional accounting competence and employability. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that professional accounting competence has a significant positive impact on the employability of accounting education students. Students who demonstrate stronger professional accounting knowledge and practical abilities are expected to show greater readiness to meet workplace expectations and compete for employment opportunities. The findings may further indicate that developing professional competencies alongside academic knowledge can strengthen students’ ability to transition from university education into professional employment. The findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of accounting education. Accounting education programmes may need to place greater emphasis on practical competence, professional accounting tasks, workplace simulations, communication skills, ethical practice, digital accounting applications, and problem-solving activities. Providing students with opportunities to apply accounting knowledge to realistic professional situations may help bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations. This approach can make accounting education more responsive to changing employment requirements. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, university administrators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and employers. Students may gain improved preparation for employment, while lecturers may obtain useful information for strengthening professional skills development in accounting education. Curriculum developers and institutional administrators may use the findings to improve the practical and professional components of accounting programmes, while employers may benefit from graduates who possess competencies that are relevant to workplace accounting activities. The study recommends that accounting education programmes strengthen professional competence development through practical accounting exercises, workplace-oriented learning, professional skills training, digital accounting activities, and exposure to real-world accounting tasks. Lecturers should provide learning activities that encourage students to apply accounting knowledge to practical situations and develop relevant professional abilities. Universities should also strengthen collaboration with professional accounting organizations and employers to ensure that students acquire competencies relevant to contemporary employment requirements. The study concludes that developing professional accounting competence can play an important role in improving the employability of accounting education students and preparing them for successful transition into the world of work.
