Impact of Real-Life Business Cases on Students’ Ability to Apply Management Accounting Concepts in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The increasing complexity of modern business environments has created a growing need for accounting graduates who can apply management accounting concepts to practical organizational problems. Management accounting requires students to understand and apply concepts such as cost behaviour, budgeting, standard costing, variance analysis, marginal costing, cost-volume-profit analysis, relevant costing, pricing decisions, performance measurement, and strategic decision-making. However, traditional classroom instruction may emphasize theoretical explanations and numerical exercises without providing sufficient opportunities for students to apply management accounting knowledge to realistic business situations. Real-life business cases provide an opportunity for students to examine actual or realistic organizational problems, analyse financial and non-financial information, evaluate alternatives, and make evidence-based management decisions. In Nigerian universities, the use of business cases may help bridge the gap between theoretical management accounting knowledge and practical decision-making requirements. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of real-life business cases on students' ability to apply management accounting concepts in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Situated Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, making it suitable for examining how business cases can provide practical management accounting experiences. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and knowledge construction through meaningful learning activities. Situated Learning Theory emphasizes that knowledge and skills are better developed when learning occurs within contexts that resemble the situations in which such knowledge will be applied. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how real-life business cases may influence students' ability to apply management accounting concepts. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Real-life business case learning will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of case exposure, relevance of cases to management accounting, use of Nigerian business scenarios, cost analysis cases, budgeting cases, variance analysis cases, pricing decisions, cost-volume-profit analysis, make-or-buy decisions, resource allocation, performance measurement, strategic decision-making, financial and non-financial information, case discussions, group analysis, problem-solving activities, presentation of recommendations, lecturer guidance, and feedback. Students' ability to apply management accounting concepts will be assessed using indicators such as cost classification, cost behaviour analysis, budgeting, standard costing, variance analysis, marginal costing, cost-volume-profit analysis, relevant costing, pricing decisions, make-or-buy decisions, performance evaluation, resource allocation, interpretation of management accounting information, analysis of business alternatives, problem-solving, decision-making, and ability to provide justified recommendations based on financial and non-financial information. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized management accounting application tests, real-life business case exercises, scenario-based questions, practical cost-analysis tasks, decision-making exercises, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to real-life business cases, case-learning experiences, and levels of management accounting application ability. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of real-life business cases on students' ability to apply management accounting concepts. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, management accounting application scores before and after exposure to real-life business cases may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that real-life business cases have a significant positive impact on students' ability to apply management accounting concepts in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to relevant, realistic, and structured business cases are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to analyse costs, prepare and interpret budgets, conduct variance analysis, evaluate pricing alternatives, apply cost-volume-profit analysis, assess relevant costs, make resource-allocation decisions, evaluate performance, and provide appropriate managerial recommendations than students with limited exposure to case-based learning. Realistic business cases may help students understand how management accounting information is used by managers to solve organizational problems and make decisions under conditions of uncertainty. The use of Nigerian business situations may further improve the relevance of learning by enabling students to examine practical issues involving changing costs, inflation, resource constraints, competition, taxation, exchange-rate fluctuations, and other business conditions. However, limited access to reliable business data, inadequate case-development skills among lecturers, large class sizes, limited instructional time, insufficient industry collaboration, and students' unfamiliarity with case-based learning may reduce its effectiveness. The study therefore expects practical, contextually relevant, interactive, and professionally guided business case learning to contribute significantly to improved application of management accounting concepts among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on real-life business cases, management accounting education, application of accounting concepts, case-based learning, experiential learning, management accounting skills, decision-making, accounting education, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of education and management sciences, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, business organizations, curriculum developers, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical management accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating real-life Nigerian business cases into management accounting courses, developing industry-relevant case materials, strengthening lecturers' case-development competencies, promoting university-industry collaboration, incorporating financial and non-financial business information into case analysis, using case presentations and group problem-solving activities, and preparing accounting education students to apply management accounting concepts effectively in contemporary Nigerian business environments.
