Impact of Research Data Management Training on Accounting Students’ Ability to Organize Research Data in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Research data management training refers to structured instruction that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to collect, organize, store, protect, and maintain research data systematically. The ability to organize research data is important to accounting students because properly arranged data facilitates accurate analysis, interpretation, retrieval, and reporting of research findings. However, some students may experience difficulties in coding, classifying, labeling, storing, and maintaining research data in an orderly manner during academic research projects. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of research data management training on accounting students’ ability to organize research data in Nigerian polytechnics. Research data management training introduces students to systematic procedures for handling data throughout the research process. The training may cover data classification, coding, labeling, file organization, data entry, storage procedures, data cleaning, documentation, backup practices, and appropriate protection of research information. Through practical exercises, students can learn how to arrange datasets in logical formats that make information easier to retrieve, verify, analyze, and update. Such training can provide students with practical experience in managing both quantitative and qualitative research data appropriately. Accounting students’ ability to organize research data refers to their capacity to arrange, classify, code, label, store, and maintain research information in a systematic and accessible manner. Effective data organization enables researchers to locate relevant information efficiently, minimize errors, maintain consistency, and prepare datasets for subsequent analysis. Research data management training may improve this ability by exposing students to established procedures and practical exercises for handling research information. Students who receive adequate training may therefore demonstrate greater competence in maintaining orderly and usable research datasets. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the impact of research data management training on students’ ability to organize research data. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured research data organization skills assessment administered to students before and after exposure to research data management training. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test employed to determine the impact of the training on students’ ability to organize research data. The study is expected to establish that research data management training has a positive impact on accounting students’ ability to organize research data. Students exposed to structured training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to classify, code, label, arrange, store, and maintain research data systematically. The study is also expected to indicate that practical training can reduce difficulties associated with poorly organized research information and help students prepare research data more effectively for analysis and interpretation. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting research methods lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical data management activities alongside theoretical instruction. Students can be provided with sample research datasets and practical exercises involving coding, classification, file organization, documentation, and data storage. Integrating these activities into research methodology courses may help students develop practical data-handling skills and understand the importance of systematic data organization in academic research. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, research supervisors, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, and polytechnic authorities. Students may benefit from improved data organization skills that can enhance the quality and efficiency of their research projects. Lecturers and research supervisors may gain useful information for improving research methodology instruction and project supervision. Accounting departments and curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen practical research training, while polytechnic authorities may benefit from evidence supporting improved access to appropriate data management resources. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics incorporate practical research data management training into accounting research methodology courses and project supervision. Lecturers should provide students with regular exercises involving data coding, classification, labeling, organization, documentation, storage, and backup procedures. Students should also be encouraged to adopt systematic data management practices throughout their research projects. The study concludes that effective research data management training can strengthen accounting students’ ability to organize research data and improve their preparedness for conducting systematic and reliable academic research.
