Impact of Research Proposal Training on Accounting Students’ Ability to Formulate Research Objectives in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Research proposal training refers to structured instruction that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to develop coherent and academically acceptable research proposals. The ability to formulate research objectives is essential to accounting students because clear objectives provide direction for the research problem, methodology, data collection, analysis, and conclusions. However, some accounting students encounter difficulties in converting identified research problems into specific, measurable, and achievable research objectives. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of research proposal training on accounting students’ ability to formulate research objectives in Nigerian polytechnics. Research proposal training introduces students to the major components and processes involved in preparing a research proposal. It may cover problem identification, statement of the problem, research questions, research objectives, literature review, research methodology, scope of the study, and organization of the proposed research. Particular attention can be given to explaining how broad research problems are translated into specific objectives that clearly indicate what a study intends to investigate. Practical proposal-writing exercises can further expose students to the process of reviewing, refining, and aligning research objectives with the identified research problem. Accounting students’ ability to formulate research objectives refers to their capacity to develop clear, specific, relevant, measurable, and achievable objectives that appropriately address a research problem. Well-formulated objectives help researchers establish the direction and boundaries of a study and provide a basis for selecting suitable research methods and evaluating findings. Research proposal training may improve this ability by giving students systematic guidance on the characteristics of effective objectives and opportunities to practice developing them. Students who receive adequate training may therefore become more capable of producing research objectives that are logically connected to their research problems. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the impact of research proposal training on students’ ability to formulate research objectives. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured assessment instrument designed to measure students’ ability to formulate research objectives before and after exposure to research proposal training. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the impact of the training on students’ ability to formulate research objectives. The study is expected to establish that research proposal training has a positive impact on accounting students’ ability to formulate research objectives. Students exposed to structured proposal training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to develop objectives that are clear, specific, relevant, measurable, and appropriately related to identified research problems. The study is also expected to show that practical proposal-writing activities can strengthen students’ understanding of how research objectives provide direction for subsequent stages of academic research. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting research methods lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical proposal development when teaching research methodology. Students can be provided with opportunities to identify research problems and develop corresponding objectives through guided classroom exercises, proposal-writing tasks, and constructive feedback. Such activities may help students move from theoretical knowledge of research methods to the practical application of research planning skills. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, research supervisors, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, and polytechnic authorities. Students may benefit from improved research planning and objective-formulation skills, while lecturers and supervisors may gain useful information for strengthening research methodology instruction. Accounting departments may also use the findings to improve research proposal preparation activities and provide students with better support during undergraduate research projects. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics strengthen practical research proposal training within accounting research methodology courses. Lecturers should provide clear guidance on the characteristics of effective research objectives and give students regular opportunities to formulate, evaluate, and revise objectives based on identified research problems. Research supervisors should also provide constructive feedback on students’ objectives during proposal development. The study concludes that effective research proposal training can improve accounting students’ ability to formulate appropriate research objectives and strengthen their overall preparedness for conducting academic research.
