Impact of Research Supervision on Undergraduate Research Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Undergraduate research skills are important competencies for Accounting Education students because they enable students to identify researchable problems, review relevant literature, formulate research objectives and questions, select appropriate research methods, collect and analyse data, interpret findings, and communicate research outcomes effectively. However, many undergraduate students may experience difficulties in developing these competencies due to limited research experience, inadequate guidance, challenges in understanding research methodology, and insufficient interaction with experienced research supervisors. Research supervision provides students with structured academic guidance throughout the research process and may improve their ability to undertake independent and systematic research. Effective supervision may involve topic development, proposal preparation, literature review guidance, methodological support, data-collection guidance, data-analysis assistance, academic writing feedback, research ethics guidance, and continuous monitoring of students' research progress. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Research Supervision on undergraduate research skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Scaffolding Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop research competencies through active participation in research activities, reflection on research experiences, conceptual understanding, and application of knowledge. Scaffolding Theory emphasizes the importance of structured guidance and progressively reduced support as students develop independent research abilities. Social Cognitive Theory explains how students develop research skills through observation, modelling, interaction, feedback, self-efficacy, and reinforcement. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Research Supervision may influence undergraduate research skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise undergraduate Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities and other relevant tertiary institutions offering Accounting Education programmes. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, institutions, departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Research Supervision will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of supervisor-student meetings, accessibility of supervisors, guidance on research-topic selection, proposal development support, literature-review guidance, research-methodology guidance, research-design guidance, instrument-development support, data-collection guidance, data-analysis guidance, interpretation of findings, academic-writing guidance, referencing guidance, research-ethics guidance, feedback on research drafts, monitoring of research progress, correction of research errors, encouragement of independent research activities, and completion support. Undergraduate research skills will be assessed using indicators such as problem identification, topic development, research-problem formulation, research-objective formulation, research-question development, hypothesis formulation, literature-search skills, literature-review skills, source evaluation, theoretical-framework development, conceptual-framework development, research-design selection, population identification, sampling-technique selection, sample-size determination, research-instrument development, questionnaire construction, interview-guide development, validity assessment, reliability assessment, data-collection skills, ethical research practices, data organization, data coding, data entry, descriptive data analysis, inferential data analysis, interpretation of statistical results, discussion of findings, conclusion development, recommendation development, academic writing, referencing, citation, plagiarism avoidance, research presentation, research defence, research communication, critical thinking, analytical thinking, problem-solving, information literacy, digital research skills, statistical-software use, research-management skills, time management, independent learning, and overall research competence. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, research-skills assessment scales, supervisor-assessment forms, research-project evaluation rubrics, proposal-assessment records, and students' research-project performance where available. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, supervision experiences, and levels of research competence. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Research Supervision on undergraduate research skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' research-skills scores before and after structured research supervision may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional research guidance. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Research Supervision has a significant positive impact on undergraduate research skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students who receive structured, accessible, and continuous research supervision are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify research problems, formulate research objectives and questions, review relevant literature, select appropriate research methods, collect and analyse data, interpret findings, and communicate research outcomes. Guidance on research-topic selection may improve students' ability to develop relevant and manageable research topics. Research-problem guidance may strengthen students' ability to identify gaps and clearly state research problems. Support in formulating objectives and research questions may improve the alignment between the research problem and the purpose of the study. Hypothesis-development guidance may strengthen students' understanding of testable research relationships. Literature-search supervision may improve students' ability to locate relevant academic sources. Literature-review guidance may strengthen students' ability to evaluate, synthesize, and organize previous research. Guidance on theoretical and conceptual frameworks may improve students' ability to connect existing theories and concepts with their research problems. Methodology supervision may strengthen students' understanding of research designs, populations, sampling techniques, sample-size determination, data-collection procedures, and research instruments. Support in questionnaire and interview-guide development may improve students' ability to construct appropriate data-collection instruments. Guidance on validity and reliability may strengthen students' ability to assess the quality of research instruments. Data-collection supervision may improve students' ability to administer instruments appropriately, observe ethical requirements, maintain accurate records, and manage respondents professionally. Data-analysis guidance may strengthen students' ability to organize, code, enter, and analyse research data. Support in the use of statistical techniques may improve students' ability to select appropriate analytical procedures. Guidance on interpretation of results may strengthen students' ability to explain statistical findings accurately. Discussion guidance may improve students' ability to relate findings to previous studies and theoretical expectations. Supervision during conclusion and recommendation development may strengthen students' ability to derive appropriate conclusions and practical recommendations from research findings. Academic-writing guidance may improve students' ability to present research ideas clearly and logically. Referencing and citation guidance may strengthen students' ability to acknowledge academic sources appropriately. Research-ethics guidance may improve students' understanding of informed consent, confidentiality, voluntary participation, responsible data management, and academic integrity. Feedback on research drafts may help students identify and correct conceptual, methodological, analytical, and writing errors. Continuous monitoring may improve students' research progress and reduce delays in completing research projects. Supervisor accessibility may provide timely clarification when students encounter research difficulties. Regular supervisor-student meetings may strengthen communication and provide opportunities for progressive research development. Encouragement of independent research activities may improve students' confidence and ability to conduct research without excessive dependence on supervisors. Research supervision may also strengthen students' critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem-solving, information-search, academic communication, digital research, research-management, and time-management skills. However, the effectiveness of Research Supervision may be constrained by large numbers of students assigned to individual supervisors, limited supervisor availability, inadequate research facilities, insufficient access to academic databases, limited statistical-software resources, poor internet connectivity, inadequate research-methodology training, delayed feedback, inconsistent supervisor-student interaction, limited funding for student research, weak institutional research support, students' limited research experience, poor time management, and inadequate integration of practical research training into Accounting Education programmes. The study therefore expects structured, accessible, timely, supportive, and research-oriented supervision to contribute significantly to improved undergraduate research skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Research Supervision, undergraduate research skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Scaffolding Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, accounting education, research methodology, undergraduate research, academic supervision, research competence, research training, research skills development, literature-review skills, research-design skills, sampling skills, research-instrument development, data-collection skills, data-analysis skills, academic writing, referencing, research ethics, statistical skills, digital research skills, critical thinking, analytical skills, problem-solving skills, research communication, research management, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, faculties of education, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, research supervisors, curriculum developers, academic researchers, professional accounting bodies, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving undergraduate research competence. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening research-supervision practices, improving supervisor-student interaction, establishing structured supervision schedules, providing timely and constructive feedback, strengthening students' access to research resources and statistical tools, improving research-methodology instruction, promoting independent research activities, reducing excessive supervisory workloads, strengthening institutional research-support systems, and integrating practical research-skills development into Accounting Education programmes across Nigeria.
