Impact of Research Supervision Practices on Accounting Education Students’ Completion of Undergraduate Research Projects in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Research supervision practices are important in guiding students through the planning, development, execution, and completion of undergraduate research projects. Research supervision practices refer to the methods and activities used by supervisors to provide academic guidance, monitor students’ progress, review research work, provide feedback, and support students throughout the research process. Completion of undergraduate research projects refers to students’ ability to complete and submit their research projects within the required academic period and according to institutional requirements. This study therefore examines the impact of research supervision practices on Accounting Education students’ completion of undergraduate research projects in Nigerian universities, with the aim of determining whether effective supervision practices improve students’ ability to complete their research projects. Research supervision practices involve several activities that support students throughout the research process. Supervisors may assist students in selecting appropriate research topics, developing research objectives and questions, reviewing relevant literature, selecting suitable research methods, collecting and analyzing data, organizing findings, and preparing the final research report. Regular meetings, timely feedback, monitoring of research progress, clarification of research requirements, and constructive corrections may also form part of effective supervision. These practices can provide students with direction and academic support while helping them identify and correct problems encountered during their research projects. Students’ completion of undergraduate research projects refers to their ability to progress through the required stages of research and successfully produce and submit a completed project. Completion may involve developing the research proposal, conducting the study, analyzing findings, writing the required chapters, making necessary corrections, and submitting the final research report within the stipulated period. Effective research supervision may improve project completion by providing students with continuous academic guidance, timely feedback, clear direction, and monitoring throughout the research process. Adequate supervision can therefore help students remain focused and make appropriate progress toward completing their projects. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a descriptive survey design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities who are undertaking or have recently completed undergraduate research projects, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess research supervision practices and students’ completion of undergraduate research projects. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of research supervision practices on students’ project completion. The study is expected to establish that effective research supervision practices have a positive impact on Accounting Education students’ completion of undergraduate research projects. Students who receive regular guidance, constructive feedback, adequate monitoring, and timely academic support are expected to demonstrate better progress toward completing their research projects. The study may also identify areas of supervision that require improvement, particularly in relation to communication, feedback, research monitoring, and availability of supervisors to provide necessary academic guidance. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Universities may need to strengthen research supervision practices by encouraging regular interaction between supervisors and students and ensuring that students receive useful feedback at appropriate stages of their research. Supervisors may also need to provide clear guidance on research procedures, monitor students’ progress, and assist them in addressing research challenges. Improved supervision practices may create a more supportive research environment and help students progress more effectively from proposal development to final project submission. The study is expected to benefit Accounting Education students, research supervisors, universities, academic departments, research coordinators, and curriculum planners. Students may benefit from improved academic guidance and greater support throughout the research process. Supervisors may gain insight into practices that can improve students’ research progress, while universities and departments may use the findings to strengthen research supervision policies and procedures. Research coordinators and academic administrators may also use the findings to improve monitoring and support systems for undergraduate research projects. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen research supervision practices by promoting regular supervisor-student meetings, timely feedback, effective progress monitoring, and clear communication of research requirements. Departments should establish appropriate mechanisms for monitoring students’ research progress and supporting supervisors in carrying out their responsibilities effectively. Supervisors should also provide constructive academic guidance throughout the different stages of research project development. It is concluded that effective research supervision practices can improve Accounting Education students’ ability to complete undergraduate research projects successfully and within the required academic period.
