Impact of Royalty Accounting Instruction on Students’ Ability to Account for Royalty Transactions in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Royalty Accounting Instruction refers to the teaching and learning activities designed to help students understand the principles, procedures, and accounting treatments associated with royalty transactions. Knowledge of royalty accounting is important because royalty agreements involve specific accounting procedures relating to minimum rent, short workings, recoupment, royalties payable and receivable, and other relevant adjustments. However, students may experience difficulties in understanding and applying these procedures when practical exposure to royalty transactions is inadequate. This study therefore examines the impact of Royalty Accounting Instruction on students’ ability to account for royalty transactions in Nigerian polytechnics. Royalty Accounting Instruction exposes students to the concepts, terminology, calculations, and recording procedures associated with royalty agreements. Through lectures, worked examples, practical exercises, transaction analysis, case studies, and classroom discussions, students can learn how to determine royalty amounts, calculate minimum rent and short workings, account for recoupment, and prepare appropriate accounting entries. Regular exposure to practical royalty problems may enable students to understand the relationship between contractual terms and their accounting treatment. Students’ ability to account for royalty transactions refers to their capacity to correctly analyse, calculate, record, and present transactions arising from royalty agreements. This ability involves interpreting royalty terms, determining relevant amounts, preparing appropriate ledger accounts, and applying the required accounting procedures accurately. Effective Royalty Accounting Instruction may improve this ability by providing students with structured opportunities to practise royalty calculations, analyse transactions, prepare accounting entries, and correct errors in their work. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on Royalty Accounting Instruction and students’ ability to account for royalty transactions. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that Royalty Accounting Instruction has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to account for royalty transactions. Students who receive effective instruction and adequate practical exposure may demonstrate greater competence in interpreting royalty agreements, performing relevant calculations, preparing accounting entries, and maintaining appropriate royalty accounts. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Financial Accounting in polytechnics. Lecturers may need to place greater emphasis on practical application when teaching royalty accounting rather than relying mainly on theoretical explanations. Worked examples, royalty agreement scenarios, calculation exercises, ledger preparation, and transaction-based assignments may provide students with opportunities to develop stronger practical skills in accounting for royalty transactions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, polytechnic administrators, curriculum planners, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger knowledge and practical competence in handling royalty transactions, while lecturers may gain insight into effective instructional approaches for teaching specialized accounting topics. Polytechnic administrators and curriculum planners may also use the findings to strengthen practical components of Financial Accounting courses. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen Royalty Accounting Instruction through practical exercises, worked examples, case-based activities, and regular assessments involving royalty transactions. Lecturers should provide students with sufficient opportunities to analyse royalty agreements, perform relevant calculations, prepare accounting entries, and correct identified errors. The study concludes that effective Royalty Accounting Instruction can enhance students’ ability to account for royalty transactions and contribute to stronger practical competence in Financial Accounting.
