Impact of Spreadsheet-Based Data Analysis Training on Accounting Students’ Quantitative Analysis Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Spreadsheet-based data analysis training refers to structured instruction that equips students with practical skills for using spreadsheet applications to organize, process, analyze, and interpret quantitative data. Quantitative analysis skills are important to accounting students because accountants frequently work with numerical information, financial data, calculations, summaries, and analytical reports. However, some students may experience difficulties in applying appropriate quantitative techniques and using digital tools to analyze numerical information accurately. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of spreadsheet-based data analysis training on accounting students’ quantitative analysis skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Spreadsheet-based data analysis training exposes students to practical techniques for entering, organizing, sorting, filtering, calculating, summarizing, and analyzing numerical data using spreadsheet applications. The training may include the use of formulas and functions, tables, charts, descriptive statistics, data sorting, data filtering, and basic quantitative analysis procedures. Through guided exercises and practical tasks, students can work with accounting-related datasets and develop familiarity with computerized approaches to quantitative analysis. Regular practical engagement may enable students to apply spreadsheet techniques more effectively when working with numerical information. Accounting students’ quantitative analysis skills refer to their ability to accurately process numerical information, perform relevant calculations, identify patterns in quantitative data, compare numerical results, and draw appropriate conclusions from analyzed data. These skills are essential for understanding financial information, evaluating business performance, and making evidence-based accounting judgments. Spreadsheet-based data analysis training may improve these skills by providing students with practical opportunities to manipulate and analyze numerical information using digital tools. The combination of quantitative reasoning and spreadsheet practice may therefore strengthen students’ accuracy and efficiency in handling accounting-related data. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, using an appropriate quasi-experimental approach to determine the impact of spreadsheet-based data analysis training on students’ quantitative analysis skills. The population will comprise accounting students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured quantitative analysis skills assessment administered to students before and after exposure to spreadsheet-based data analysis training. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test employed to determine the impact of the training on students’ quantitative analysis skills. The study is expected to establish that spreadsheet-based data analysis training has a positive impact on accounting students’ quantitative analysis skills. Students exposed to structured spreadsheet training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to organize numerical data, perform calculations, apply appropriate spreadsheet functions, analyze quantitative information, and interpret numerical results. The study is also expected to indicate that practical use of spreadsheet applications can strengthen students’ confidence and competence in handling accounting-related quantitative tasks. The study will have important implications for teaching and learning in accounting education. Accounting lecturers may place greater emphasis on practical spreadsheet activities when teaching quantitative and accounting-related courses. Students can be provided with accounting datasets and practical exercises that require them to apply spreadsheet functions to real-world numerical problems. Integrating spreadsheet-based activities into accounting instruction may also help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge of quantitative techniques and the digital skills required for contemporary accounting practice. The findings will be beneficial to accounting students, accounting lecturers, heads of accounting departments, curriculum planners, and polytechnic authorities. Students may benefit from improved quantitative analysis and digital data-handling skills that can support both academic performance and future accounting responsibilities. Lecturers may gain useful information for improving practical instruction in quantitative analysis, while accounting departments and curriculum planners may use the findings to strengthen technology-oriented components of accounting education. Polytechnic authorities may also benefit from evidence supporting greater integration of practical digital learning activities. The study recommends that accounting departments in Nigerian polytechnics incorporate spreadsheet-based data analysis training into relevant accounting and quantitative analysis courses. Lecturers should provide students with regular practical exercises involving accounting datasets, spreadsheet formulas, data organization, quantitative calculations, and interpretation of results. Adequate access to computers and spreadsheet applications should also be provided to support effective practical learning. The study concludes that spreadsheet-based data analysis training can strengthen accounting students’ quantitative analysis skills and better prepare them for the numerical and digital demands of modern accounting practice.
