Impact of Spreadsheet Formula Training on Students’ Accounting Calculation Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Spreadsheet proficiency has become an important component of accounting education because modern accounting tasks increasingly require the use of digital tools for computation, data analysis, financial reporting, budgeting, record keeping, and decision-making. Accounting Education students are expected to apply spreadsheet formulas accurately when performing accounting calculations and managing financial information. However, inadequate practical exposure to spreadsheet formula functions may limit students’ ability to perform accounting calculations efficiently and accurately. Spreadsheet Formula Training provides students with structured opportunities to learn and practise the application of spreadsheet formulas to accounting-related tasks. Such training may strengthen students’ computational accuracy, speed, analytical ability, and practical digital accounting competence. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Spreadsheet Formula Training on students’ accounting calculation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical skills through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical digital skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for workplace responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Spreadsheet Formula Training may influence students’ accounting calculation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, spreadsheet formula competency assessment tests, practical accounting calculation tasks, spreadsheet-based exercises, performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, accounting calculation scores before and after the training may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Spreadsheet Formula Training has a significant positive impact on students’ accounting calculation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured spreadsheet formula training are expected to demonstrate improved accuracy, speed, confidence, and efficiency when performing accounting calculations. Training in basic arithmetic formulas may strengthen students’ ability to perform routine accounting computations. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division exercises may improve students’ ability to calculate financial amounts accurately. Percentage calculations may strengthen students’ ability to determine tax, discounts, commissions, markups, margins, and other percentage-based accounting figures. Average and total calculations may improve students’ ability to summarize financial information. Ratio and proportion exercises may strengthen students’ ability to perform financial analysis. Discount and markup calculations may improve students’ ability to determine appropriate selling and purchasing figures. Tax-calculation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to apply relevant tax computations to accounting transactions. Depreciation exercises may improve students’ ability to calculate depreciation expenses and asset values.
