Impact of Stock Market Education on Accounting Students’ Understanding of Investment Risk in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Stock market education is an important component of Accounting Education because students need to understand investment opportunities, market conditions, and the risks associated with investing in securities. Stock market education provides students with knowledge of shares, securities, market operations, investment decisions, price fluctuations, and factors that influence investment outcomes. However, inadequate knowledge of stock market activities may make it difficult for students to properly recognize and evaluate investment risks. This study examines the impact of stock market education on accounting students’ understanding of investment risk in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is aimed at determining whether stock market education improves students’ understanding of the nature, causes, and implications of risks associated with stock market investments. Stock market education involves structured learning activities through which students acquire knowledge about the operation and characteristics of securities markets. It may cover stock market terminology, types of securities, buying and selling of shares, market price movements, investment returns, diversification, and factors that influence investment decisions. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, case studies, market-related examples, and analysis of investment information, students can develop a clearer understanding of how stock markets function. Such education can also expose students to the relationship between potential investment returns and the risks that may accompany different investment choices. Students’ understanding of investment risk refers to their ability to recognize, explain, and evaluate the possibility of financial loss or uncertain investment outcomes. Investment risk may arise from changes in market prices, economic conditions, business performance, interest rates, and other factors affecting investment value. Stock market education can improve students’ understanding by providing them with knowledge and analytical skills for examining investment alternatives and recognizing factors that may influence investment outcomes. Adequate understanding of investment risk may therefore enable accounting students to make more informed judgments when evaluating stock market investment opportunities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to stock market education and their understanding of investment risk. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the impact of stock market education on students’ understanding of investment risk. The study is expected to establish that stock market education has a positive impact on accounting students’ understanding of investment risk. Students who receive adequate exposure to stock market education are expected to demonstrate stronger knowledge of market-related risks, factors influencing investment outcomes, and the importance of evaluating investment alternatives before making decisions. The study may further establish that practical exposure to stock market concepts and investment scenarios improves students’ ability to recognize uncertainty and potential losses associated with securities investments. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education in polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may need to provide students with greater exposure to practical stock market concepts and investment risk analysis. Classroom activities involving securities information, investment scenarios, market price movements, and comparative evaluation of investment alternatives may help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with real-world financial decisions. Such instructional approaches may also improve students’ financial awareness and analytical skills in relation to investment activities. The study is expected to be significant to accounting students, lecturers, polytechnic management, curriculum developers, financial educators, and other stakeholders in Accounting Education. Students may benefit from improved understanding of investment risk and greater ability to evaluate stock market opportunities, while lecturers may gain insight into the importance of integrating investment education into accounting instruction. Curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen investment and financial market content within Accounting Education programmes. The study may also contribute to preparing graduates who possess relevant knowledge for making informed financial and investment judgments. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen stock market education within Accounting Education programmes by providing students with both theoretical and practical knowledge of securities markets and investment risk. Lecturers should use case studies, market-based examples, practical exercises, and investment analysis activities to improve students’ understanding of risk. Students should also be encouraged to develop the ability to critically evaluate investment information before making financial decisions. The study concludes that effective stock market education can contribute to improving accounting students’ understanding of investment risk and preparing them for informed participation in financial and investment activities.
