Impact of Strategic Cost Management Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Evaluate Long-Term Business Decisions in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
This study examined the impact of strategic cost management knowledge on students’ ability to evaluate long-term business decisions in Nigerian universities. Strategic cost management knowledge refers to students’ understanding of cost management approaches used to improve organizational efficiency, competitiveness and long-term financial performance. The ability to evaluate long-term business decisions involves students’ capacity to examine financial and cost information, compare strategic alternatives, assess their future implications and make appropriate judgments about business choices. The study was motivated by the increasing importance of strategic cost management in modern business environments and the need for Accounting Education students to develop practical competencies for evaluating decisions that affect organizations over an extended period. Students with adequate knowledge of strategic cost management may be better equipped to understand the relationship between costs, business strategy, competitiveness and long-term performance. The study therefore investigated whether strategic cost management knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to evaluate long-term business decisions in Nigerian universities. Strategic cost management provides a broader approach to managing costs by considering both internal operations and external business factors. Knowledge of value chain analysis, strategic positioning, cost drivers, life-cycle costing and target costing can help students understand how organizations manage costs while pursuing long-term strategic objectives. Students who understand these concepts may be better able to assess the cost implications of major business decisions and determine whether different alternatives can support organizational competitiveness and sustainability. This knowledge is particularly relevant to Accounting Education students because it connects management accounting principles with strategic planning, cost efficiency and long-term business decision-making. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ strategic cost management knowledge and their ability to evaluate long-term business decisions. Strategic cost management knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of strategic cost analysis, cost drivers, value chain analysis, target costing, life-cycle costing and strategic positioning. Students’ ability to evaluate long-term business decisions was considered in terms of their capacity to compare strategic alternatives, assess long-term cost implications, evaluate investment and expansion choices, consider competitive factors and determine the likely effects of business decisions on future performance. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that strategic cost management knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to evaluate long-term business decisions. Students with adequate knowledge of strategic cost management may be better able to identify the long-term financial implications of different business alternatives. Knowledge of cost drivers can help students understand the factors responsible for changes in business costs, while value chain analysis can enable them to examine how different business activities contribute to organizational value. Understanding target costing and life-cycle costing may also help students evaluate the cost implications of products and services throughout their development and operating periods. These competencies can provide students with a stronger basis for assessing strategic alternatives and making informed long-term business judgments. Furthermore, practical exposure to strategic cost management can strengthen students’ analytical reasoning, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Classroom exercises involving strategic cost analysis, value chain activities, target costing, life-cycle costing and realistic business cases can provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. Students can be required to compare strategic alternatives, assess future costs and benefits and justify their recommendations based on available accounting information. Such activities can help students move beyond memorizing management accounting concepts and develop the ability to interpret financial information from a strategic perspective. Regular practice can also improve their confidence in evaluating complex decisions that may influence the future direction and competitiveness of a business. The findings will be useful to Accounting Education students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian universities. Students can benefit from developing strategic cost management knowledge that enables them to understand the relationship between cost information and long-term business strategy. Lecturers should provide regular exercises involving strategic cost analysis, cost drivers, value chain analysis and long-term decision-making. Accounting departments should also integrate practical strategic cost management activities into relevant management accounting courses. Business case studies involving expansion, product development, outsourcing, investment and competitive strategies can expose students to realistic long-term decisions and strengthen their ability to apply accounting information strategically. The study recommends that lecturers should combine theoretical instruction on strategic cost management with practical exercises, case studies and strategic decision-making activities. Students should be encouraged to develop a clear understanding of cost drivers, value chain analysis, target costing, life-cycle costing and strategic positioning and apply these concepts when evaluating long-term business alternatives. Accounting departments should provide adequate learning resources and practical opportunities for students to analyze strategic cost information. In conclusion, strengthening strategic cost management knowledge can improve students’ ability to evaluate long-term business decisions and contribute to stronger cost analysis, strategic thinking, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, financial evaluation, decision-making competence, management accounting knowledge and professional preparedness among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities.
