Impact of Structured Industry Visits on Students’ Understanding of Contemporary Accounting Practice in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The changing nature of the accounting profession has increased the need for accounting education programmes that provide students with meaningful exposure to contemporary accounting practice beyond the traditional classroom environment. Structured industry visits provide students with opportunities to observe accounting professionals, workplace processes, accounting systems, technologies, internal controls, financial reporting procedures, auditing activities, taxation processes, and other professional practices within authentic organizational settings. When properly planned and integrated with classroom instruction, industry visits may help students connect theoretical accounting concepts with their practical application and develop a clearer understanding of professional expectations. In Nigerian universities, where students may have limited opportunities to observe real accounting workplaces before graduation, structured industry visits may contribute to a more practical and relevant accounting education experience. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of structured industry visits on students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Situated Learning Theory, and Social Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for structured industry visits. Situated Learning Theory emphasizes the development of knowledge and skills through participation in authentic social and professional contexts, making it particularly relevant to students' exposure to real accounting workplaces. Social Learning Theory explains learning through observation, interaction, modelling, and feedback, providing a basis for understanding how students may learn contemporary accounting practices by observing professional accountants and workplace processes. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how structured industry visits may influence students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Structured industry visits will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of visits, duration of visits, relevance of organizations visited, pre-visit preparation, clearly defined learning objectives, exposure to accounting departments, interaction with accounting professionals, observation of accounting procedures, exposure to accounting software, digital accounting systems, financial reporting processes, auditing activities, taxation procedures, internal controls, budgeting, financial analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity practices, sustainability reporting, professional ethics, post-visit reflection, lecturer supervision, practitioner presentations, student questions, feedback, assessment activities, and opportunities for repeated industry exposure. Students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of current accounting procedures, understanding of digital accounting systems, awareness of accounting technologies, knowledge of contemporary financial reporting practices, understanding of auditing processes, taxation practices, internal control procedures, financial analysis, data analytics, cybersecurity considerations, sustainability reporting, professional ethics, workplace expectations, professional roles, accounting career pathways, and ability to relate theoretical accounting concepts to real-world accounting practice. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized contemporary accounting practice knowledge tests, observation checklists, industry-visit records, reflective reports, case-based assessment tasks, professional-practice scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, industry-visit experiences, exposure to accounting professionals, and levels of understanding of contemporary accounting practice. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of structured industry visits on students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' contemporary accounting practice knowledge scores before and after participation in structured industry visits may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that structured industry visits have a significant positive impact on students' understanding of contemporary accounting practice in Nigerian universities. Students who participate in well-planned and professionally guided industry visits are expected to demonstrate stronger understanding of how accounting principles and procedures are applied within real organizations than students without comparable industry exposure. Direct observation of accounting workplaces may improve students' understanding of financial reporting, auditing, taxation, internal controls, budgeting, accounting information systems, digital accounting technologies, data analytics, professional ethics, and emerging accounting practices. Interaction with accounting professionals may also help students understand workplace expectations, professional responsibilities, communication practices, career opportunities, and the competencies required in contemporary accounting roles. Pre-visit preparation and post-visit reflection may further strengthen students' ability to connect workplace observations with accounting concepts learned in the classroom. However, inadequate planning, limited access to accounting departments, weak university–industry partnerships, transportation and logistical challenges, insufficient funding, large student groups, restricted access to confidential organizational information, and limited follow-up activities may reduce the effectiveness of industry visits. The study therefore expects structured, purposeful, adequately supervised, and curriculum-linked industry visits to contribute significantly to improved understanding of contemporary accounting practice among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on structured industry visits, contemporary accounting practice, accounting education, experiential learning, workplace learning, industry–academia collaboration, professional exposure, accounting pedagogy, employability skills, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, accounting firms, employers, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating structured industry visits into accounting education programmes, establishing formal partnerships with accounting firms and organizations, developing clear pre-visit and post-visit learning activities, involving accounting professionals in student orientation and reflection sessions, exposing students to contemporary accounting technologies and practices, ensuring appropriate student supervision and safety, and creating regular opportunities for students to observe and understand the realities of professional accounting practice in Nigeria.
