Impact of Taxation Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Identify Allowable Tax Deductions in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

This study examined the impact of taxation knowledge on students’ ability to identify allowable tax deductions in Nigerian polytechnics. Taxation knowledge refers to students’ understanding of tax principles, rules, procedures, and requirements relating to the assessment of taxable income. The ability to identify allowable tax deductions relates to students’ capacity to correctly recognize expenses and deductions that may be legally deducted when determining taxable income. The study was motivated by the importance of accurate tax knowledge in solving taxation problems and applying tax regulations correctly. The study therefore investigated whether adequate taxation knowledge improves students’ ability to identify allowable tax deductions. Allowable tax deductions are important in determining the amount of income that is subject to taxation. Students studying accounting and taxation need to understand the distinction between allowable and non-allowable deductions in order to correctly calculate taxable income and apply relevant tax principles. Inadequate knowledge may lead to the incorrect classification of expenses and deductions, resulting in errors when solving taxation-related problems. Developing a sound understanding of allowable deductions can therefore improve students’ analytical skills and prepare them for future responsibilities in taxation practice, accounting, auditing, and financial reporting. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised accounting and taxation students in selected Nigerian polytechnics, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ taxation knowledge and their ability to identify allowable tax deductions. The instrument was validated by experts in accounting and taxation education, while appropriate reliability procedures were conducted to establish its consistency. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that taxation knowledge has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to identify allowable tax deductions. Students with stronger knowledge of taxation principles are expected to demonstrate greater accuracy in distinguishing deductible expenses from expenses that cannot be deducted for tax purposes. Adequate taxation knowledge may also improve students’ ability to interpret taxation questions, calculate taxable income, and apply relevant tax rules to practical situations. Conversely, inadequate knowledge may increase the likelihood of errors in identifying allowable deductions and determining the appropriate taxable income. The study also emphasizes the importance of practical approaches to taxation education in Nigerian polytechnics. Lecturers can improve students’ understanding through practical taxation exercises, case studies, examples of business expenses, and classroom activities requiring students to classify different expenses as allowable or non-allowable deductions. Students should also be encouraged to study relevant tax regulations and practice solving taxation problems involving taxable income. These approaches can help students connect theoretical taxation principles with practical applications and develop greater confidence in handling tax-related calculations. The findings of the study are expected to be useful to accounting students, taxation lecturers, accounting departments, curriculum developers, and professional accounting organizations. For students, improved taxation knowledge can strengthen their ability to solve tax-related problems and provide a useful foundation for professional practice. Lecturers may use the findings to identify areas where students experience difficulties in understanding allowable deductions and improve their instructional methods. Curriculum developers may also strengthen taxation courses by incorporating more practical exercises that require students to identify and apply allowable deductions in different taxation situations. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen taxation education through practical exercises, case studies, tax calculation assignments, and regular assessments of students’ understanding of allowable deductions. Lecturers should provide clear explanations of the principles guiding allowable and non-allowable deductions and give students opportunities to apply these principles to realistic taxation situations. Students should also engage in independent study and continuous practice of taxation problems. Overall, the study concludes that adequate taxation knowledge is important for improving students’ ability to identify allowable tax deductions and strengthening their competence in taxation-related academic and professional activities.
