Impact of Working Capital Knowledge on Students’ Ability to Assess Business Financial Stability in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
This study examined the impact of working capital knowledge on students’ ability to assess business financial stability in Nigerian universities. Working capital knowledge refers to students’ understanding of current assets, current liabilities, working capital management, liquidity and the relationship between short-term resources and obligations. Business financial stability refers to the ability of a business to maintain a sound financial position, meet its short-term obligations and sustain its operations effectively. The study was motivated by the importance of working capital in business operations and the need for accounting students to understand how short-term financial resources influence the financial condition of a business. Students with adequate working capital knowledge may be better able to examine financial information, identify potential financial difficulties and assess whether a business has sufficient resources to meet its obligations. The study therefore investigated whether working capital knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to assess business financial stability in Nigerian universities. The study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised Accounting and Accounting Education students in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample was selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured research instrument designed to measure students’ working capital knowledge and their ability to assess business financial stability. Working capital knowledge was examined in relation to students’ understanding of current assets, current liabilities, working capital, liquidity and short-term financial management, while financial stability assessment was considered in terms of students’ ability to evaluate a business’s capacity to meet short-term obligations, identify financial strengths and weaknesses and interpret relevant financial information. The instrument was validated by experts in Accounting Education and related fields, while appropriate reliability procedures were used to establish its consistency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique was used to test the research hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that working capital knowledge has a significant impact on students’ ability to assess business financial stability. Students with adequate knowledge of working capital may be better able to understand the relationship between current assets and current liabilities and evaluate the short-term financial position of a business. Knowledge of cash, inventories, receivables, payables and other current items can help students determine how effectively a business is managing its short-term resources and obligations. Working capital knowledge may also enable students to identify situations involving inadequate liquidity or excessive short-term resources and understand the possible implications for business operations. This knowledge can provide students with a stronger foundation for interpreting financial information and making appropriate judgments about business financial stability. Furthermore, practical exposure to working capital problems can strengthen students’ analytical and financial decision-making skills. Lecturers can use financial statements, business cases, working capital calculations and practical accounting exercises to require students to evaluate the short-term financial condition of businesses. Such activities can help students connect theoretical accounting knowledge with realistic financial situations and improve their ability to identify financial strengths, weaknesses and potential areas of concern. The findings will be useful to accounting students, lecturers, curriculum planners and accounting departments in Nigerian universities. Lecturers should provide regular practical exercises involving working capital analysis, liquidity assessment and interpretation of current assets and liabilities. Accounting departments should also integrate practical financial stability assessment into relevant accounting courses and assessments. Students should be encouraged to develop both theoretical and practical knowledge of working capital and apply this knowledge to realistic business situations. The study concludes that strengthening working capital knowledge can improve students’ ability to assess business financial stability and contribute to better financial analysis, analytical skills, decision-making ability, accounting competence and professional preparedness.
