Effect of Individual Anatomy Learning Plans on Practical Examination Performance

Abstract

The study examines the effect of individual anatomy learning plans on students’ performance in practical examinations. Individual learning plans provide students with a structured approach to organizing their anatomy study according to their learning needs, available study time, difficult topics, and practical learning requirements. Such plans may encourage systematic revision, regular practice, and better preparation for practical anatomy assessments. The study will assess the effect of individual anatomy learning plans on students’ practical examination performance. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline performance in practical anatomy, developing and implementing individualized learning plans, assessing students’ practical examination performance following the intervention, and comparing the performance of students who use individual learning plans with those who receive conventional revision guidance. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to an intervention group that will use structured individual anatomy learning plans and a comparison group that will receive conventional revision guidance. Data will be collected using standardized practical anatomy assessments covering anatomical structure identification, anatomical landmarks, terminology, and structural relationships. Pre-test and post-test assessments will be conducted, and the data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistics will be used to determine differences between the groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in practical examination performance between students who use individual anatomy learning plans and those who follow conventional revision approaches. Students using individualized plans are expected to demonstrate improved preparation, organization of revision activities, and practical identification of anatomical structures. However, some students may continue to experience difficulties with complex, small, deep, closely related, or visually similar structures despite having structured learning plans. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and students. The study may provide useful information on the potential value of individualized study planning in supporting practical anatomy learning and examination preparation. It may also assist educators in developing strategies that encourage students to organize their practical revision according to their learning needs while maintaining appropriate guidance and academic support. The study will conclude by determining the effect of individual anatomy learning plans on students’ practical examination performance. It is recommended that students should be encouraged to develop structured and realistic individual learning plans that include practical revision, repeated structure identification, and review of difficult areas, while educators should provide appropriate guidance in their development. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of individualized learning plans in practical anatomy education.
