Effect of Surface Anatomy Practicals on Students’ Recognition of Underlying Structures
Abstract
The study examines the effect of surface anatomy practicals on students’ recognition of underlying anatomical structures. Surface anatomy provides an important link between visible features of the body and the deeper structures located beneath the skin. The ability to identify surface landmarks and relate them to underlying muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, and organs is essential for developing practical anatomical knowledge and understanding clinical examination. Practical exposure to surface anatomy may therefore help students develop stronger spatial awareness and improve their ability to recognize structures based on their external anatomical relationships. The study will assess students’ baseline ability to recognize selected underlying anatomical structures and determine the effect of structured surface anatomy practicals on their performance. The practical sessions will involve identification of surface landmarks, palpation where appropriate, observation of external anatomical features, use of anatomical diagrams or models, and guided correlation of surface markings with underlying structures. Students will also be required to identify the anatomical structures associated with selected body regions and explain their spatial relationships during the practical activities. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to a surface anatomy practical group and a comparison group receiving conventional anatomy instruction. The intervention group will participate in structured surface anatomy practical sessions, while both groups will undergo standardized assessments before and after the instructional period. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests used to determine differences in students’ recognition of underlying structures. The study is expected to reveal improved recognition of underlying anatomical structures among students exposed to surface anatomy practicals. Students may demonstrate better ability to identify surface landmarks and relate them to deeper structures, particularly in regions where external anatomical features provide useful guides to underlying anatomy. Improved recognition may also be observed in the identification of muscles, bones, vessels, nerves, and selected organs. However, students may continue to experience difficulty with structures that are deep, small, closely related, or poorly represented by external surface features. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical educators, curriculum planners, academic administrators, and undergraduate students by providing information on the value of practical surface anatomy in anatomy education. The findings may support greater integration of surface anatomy activities into practical teaching, especially where students require stronger understanding of spatial relationships between external landmarks and deeper structures. Such practical exposure may also provide a foundation for subsequent learning in physical examination and other clinically related activities. The study will conclude by determining the effect of surface anatomy practicals on students’ recognition of underlying anatomical structures. It is recommended that structured surface anatomy practicals be incorporated into anatomy education using appropriate supervision, anatomical models, diagrams, and practical identification activities. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of surface anatomy practicals in improving anatomical recognition and the application of anatomical knowledge.
