Relationship Between Anatomy Laboratory Resource Utilization and Practical Performance

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between anatomy laboratory resource utilization and students’ practical performance, with emphasis on how the effective use of available laboratory facilities and instructional materials may influence students’ ability to identify, interpret, and apply anatomical knowledge during practical sessions. Anatomy laboratory resources provide opportunities for students to develop hands-on experience with anatomical specimens, models, charts, imaging materials, and other practical learning aids. Effective utilization of these resources may therefore contribute to meaningful understanding and improved practical competence in anatomy. The study will assess the pattern of anatomy laboratory resource utilization among undergraduate students and determine the level of students’ practical performance in anatomy. It will consider students’ use of available resources such as anatomical specimens, models, charts, atlases, microscopes, radiological images, and other relevant laboratory materials. Students’ practical performance will be evaluated using appropriate practical identification or performance-based assessment procedures covering selected anatomical structures and relationships. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who participate in anatomy practical sessions will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on laboratory resource utilization will be obtained through a structured questionnaire or utilization checklist, while practical performance will be assessed using a standardized practical test or structured identification exercise. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical test will be used to determine the relationship between resource utilization and practical performance. The study is expected to reveal variations in the extent to which students utilize available anatomy laboratory resources and differences in their practical performance. Students who make more effective use of relevant laboratory resources are expected to demonstrate better practical identification, anatomical orientation, and application of anatomical knowledge. However, some resources may be utilized more frequently than others depending on their accessibility, familiarity, and relevance to specific practical activities, while complex structures may remain more difficult to identify. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory instructors, academic administrators, and students by providing information on the importance of effective utilization of practical learning resources in anatomy education. The findings may assist anatomy departments in identifying areas where laboratory resources are adequately utilized and areas requiring improved organization, accessibility, maintenance, or instructional guidance. The study may also encourage students to make more purposeful use of available laboratory materials during practical learning. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between anatomy laboratory resource utilization and students’ practical performance. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories be adequately equipped and that students receive appropriate guidance on the effective use of available resources during practical sessions. Regular maintenance, improved accessibility, structured practical activities, and continued integration of relevant laboratory resources into anatomy teaching should be encouraged, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are recommended.
