ABSTRACT

1.1 Background of the Study

David Hume's empiricist philosophy has had a profound impact on the development of Western philosophy, particularly in the areas of epistemology, metaphysics, and logic (Hume, 1739-1740; Russell, 1946). Hume's skepticism about causality, induction, and human knowledge has shaped the trajectory of philosophical thought, influencing thinkers such as Immanuel Kant (Kant, 1781), Karl Popper (Popper, 1959), and Bertrand Russell (Russell, 1912).

Hume's empiricism is rooted in his belief that all knowledge comes from experience and observation (Hume, 1739-1740, p. 1). He argued that our beliefs and ideas are shaped by our senses and that we can never truly know the nature of reality (Hume, 1739-1740, p. 2). This skepticism about metaphysics and theology has had a lasting impact on the development of philosophy, leading to a focus on epistemology and the limits of human knowledge (Russell, 1946, p. 234).
