The modern Pentecostal church has experienced remarkable growth across Africa and globally, yet this expansion has brought concerning patterns of ministerial gift abuse that demand careful examination (Ngwoke, 2024). Many sincere believers enter Pentecostal spaces seeking spiritual guidance, healing, and community support, only to encounter leaders who misuse their God given authority for personal gain (Stone, 2025). The abuse of ministerial gifts manifests in various forms including financial exploitation, emotional manipulation, and the distortion of biblical teachings to serve leadership agendas (Orogun & Pillay, 2022). When pastors and church leaders prioritize wealth accumulation over genuine spiritual care, they fundamentally betray the trust placed in them by their congregations (Smith, 2021). This betrayal creates deep wounds that can cause individuals to question their faith and withdraw from religious community’s altogether (Stone, 2025).
Financial exploitation represents one of the most visible forms of ministerial abuse in contemporary Pentecostalism (Ngwoke, 2024). Some church leaders promote teachings that link financial giving directly to divine blessings, creating pressure on vulnerable members to contribute beyond their means (Akabike et al., 2021). Congregants seeking breakthroughs in employment, health, or relationships may feel compelled to give large sums with promises of miraculous returns that rarely materialize (Ngwoke, 2024). Emotional and spiritual manipulation often accompanies financial exploitation in abusive Pentecostal settings (Orogun & Pillay, 2022). When congregants are taught that questioning leadership equals resisting God, critical thinking becomes discouraged and blind obedience is elevated as spiritual virtue (Orogun & Pillay, 2022). This environment makes it difficult for members to recognize abuse or seek help when they experience harm within the church community (Stone, 2025). The resulting isolation can deepen the impact of abuse and delay healing for those affected (Orogun & Pillay, 2022).
The commercialization of spiritual items and services further illustrates how ministerial gifts can be abused in modern Pentecostalism (Ngwoke, 2024). Anointing oils, miracle stickers, and special prayer sessions are sometimes sold at high prices with claims of supernatural power (Ngwoke, 2024). These practices transform sacred rituals into commodities, reducing faith to a transactional relationship rather than a genuine spiritual journey (Smith, 2021). Vulnerable people seeking divine intervention may spend money they cannot afford on items that promise solutions to their deepest struggles (Ngwoke, 2024). When these promises fail to materialize, individuals may experience disappointment, shame, and spiritual confusion (Stone, 2025).
Leadership structures in some Pentecostal churches enable abuse by concentrating power in the hands of a few individuals without adequate accountability (Adedibu, 2023).
