Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Financial Accountability Practices in Student-Owned Businesses in Nigeria

Abstract

Financial accountability is an important component of effective business management because it promotes proper documentation, transparent use of funds, accurate financial records, and responsible decision-making. Student-owned businesses provide practical environments in which students can apply financial knowledge while managing income, expenditure, assets, liabilities, and other business transactions. However, student entrepreneurs may encounter difficulties in maintaining proper financial records, separating business and personal funds, documenting transactions, monitoring expenditures, and applying appropriate financial controls. Accounting Education provides students with knowledge and practical competencies in bookkeeping, financial recording, budgeting, internal control, financial reporting, and responsible financial management, which may influence how they manage the finances of their businesses. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Education on students’ financial accountability practices in student-owned businesses in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Human Capital Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Agency Theory. Human Capital Theory explains how accounting knowledge and skills acquired through education can improve individuals’ ability to manage financial resources effectively. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes the development of practical financial competencies through experience, application, reflection, and problem-solving. Agency Theory provides a basis for understanding the importance of accountability, transparency, monitoring, and responsible management of business resources. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Education may influence financial accountability practices among students who operate their own businesses. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise students who own and operate businesses in selected universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible student entrepreneurs. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial accountability practice scales, business-record assessment checklists, and relevant financial documents where accessible. Accounting Education will be assessed using indicators such as bookkeeping knowledge, understanding of accounting principles, transaction-recording knowledge, financial reporting knowledge, budgeting knowledge, cash-management knowledge, expenditure-control knowledge, internal-control knowledge, taxation awareness, financial documentation knowledge, and practical accounting skills. Students’ financial accountability practices will be assessed using indicators such as maintenance of business records, documentation of income and expenditure, preparation of receipts and invoices, cashbook maintenance, separation of personal and business funds, bank-account management, budgeting, expenditure monitoring, cash reconciliation, inventory records, accounts receivable records, accounts payable records, financial reporting, transaction verification, supporting-document retention, authorization of expenditures, financial review, error correction, record security, transparency in financial dealings, compliance with business procedures, and responsible use of business funds. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize respondents’ characteristics, accounting-education exposure, business characteristics, and financial accountability practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including correlation analysis, t-tests, chi-square tests, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Accounting Education on students’ financial accountability practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Education has a significant positive effect on students’ financial accountability practices in student-owned businesses in Nigeria. Students with stronger accounting knowledge and practical accounting competencies are expected to demonstrate better financial documentation, transaction recording, expenditure monitoring, and financial-control practices. Bookkeeping knowledge may improve students’ ability to maintain accurate business records. Understanding of accounting principles may strengthen their ability to classify and record financial transactions appropriately. Transaction-recording knowledge may improve the completeness and accuracy of business records. Financial-reporting knowledge may enhance students’ ability to prepare and interpret financial information. Budgeting knowledge may strengthen expenditure planning and monitoring. Cash-management knowledge may improve the control and safeguarding of business funds. Internal-control knowledge may encourage students to establish appropriate procedures for authorization, verification, and monitoring of financial transactions. Taxation awareness may improve students’ understanding of financial obligations associated with their businesses. Financial-documentation knowledge may strengthen the use and retention of receipts, invoices, vouchers, and other supporting documents. Practical accounting skills may enable students to apply classroom knowledge to actual business transactions and financial-management decisions. The study therefore expects relevant and practically oriented Accounting Education to contribute significantly to improved financial accountability among student entrepreneurs in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Accounting Education, financial accountability, student entrepreneurship, financial management, bookkeeping, accounting skills, entrepreneurial education, business record keeping, financial literacy, internal control, financial documentation, budgeting, cash management, and student-owned businesses in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education, university and polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, entrepreneurship development centres, student entrepreneurship programmes, financial institutions, business-support organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders regarding the importance of accounting knowledge in promoting responsible financial management among student entrepreneurs. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening practical Accounting Education, integrating student-business accounting activities into accounting curricula, improving students’ bookkeeping and financial-record management skills, promoting separation of personal and business finances, strengthening budgeting and expenditure-control practices, encouraging proper documentation of business transactions, improving students’ understanding of internal controls, and preparing student entrepreneurs to manage business finances responsibly and accountably in Nigeria.
