Effect of Financial Technology Education on Students’ Understanding of Digital Payment Accounting in Nigerian Universities

 

Abstract

The rapid growth of financial technology (fintech) has transformed payment systems and created new accounting requirements associated with electronic and digital transactions. Digital payment platforms, mobile money, electronic transfers, payment gateways, point-of-sale systems, digital wallets, and other fintech applications have become increasingly relevant to accounting practice. These technologies generate large volumes of electronic transaction records that require accurate recording, classification, reconciliation, verification, reporting, and control. Accounting education students therefore require adequate knowledge of fintech and digital payment accounting to prepare for contemporary accounting and financial management environments. However, limited exposure to fintech education, inadequate practical training, insufficient access to digital payment technologies, and weak understanding of the accounting implications of electronic transactions may constrain students' preparedness. Financial technology education provides an opportunity to bridge the gap between conventional accounting knowledge and emerging digital payment systems. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of financial technology education on students' understanding of digital payment accounting in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Human Capital Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how students' perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of fintech and digital payment technologies may influence their willingness to learn and effectively apply these technologies. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in financial technology and accounting education can improve students' knowledge, competencies, productivity, and employability. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, practical application, problem-solving, and knowledge construction through meaningful learning experiences, providing a basis for examining how practical fintech education may improve students' understanding of digital payment accounting. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how financial technology education may influence students' understanding of digital payment accounting in Nigerian universities. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate accounting students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting students. Financial technology education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to fintech instruction, frequency and duration of training, mobile banking, electronic funds transfer, mobile money, payment gateways, point-of-sale systems, digital wallets, electronic payment platforms, online payment systems, transaction authentication, digital receipts, payment processing, electronic transaction records, payment security, fraud risks, transaction reconciliation, practical demonstrations, case studies, and digital payment simulations. Students' understanding of digital payment accounting will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of digital payment transaction recording, classification of electronic transactions, recognition and documentation of digital payments, reconciliation of electronic payment records, treatment of transaction fees and charges, identification of payment errors, verification of transaction records, accounting for electronic receipts and payments, digital audit trails, internal controls, financial reporting implications, fraud risks, and application of accounting principles to digital payment scenarios. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized digital payment accounting knowledge tests, practical accounting exercises, transaction-reconciliation tasks, scenario-based questions, case studies, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to fintech education, use of digital payment platforms, practical experience, and levels of digital payment accounting knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of financial technology education on students' understanding of digital payment accounting. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, digital payment accounting knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that financial technology education has a significant positive effect on students' understanding of digital payment accounting in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured, practical, and accounting-focused fintech education are expected to demonstrate stronger knowledge of digital payment transaction recording, classification, verification, reconciliation, transaction fees, electronic documentation, internal controls, digital audit trails, and financial reporting implications than students with limited exposure. Practical simulations may help students understand how electronic payments generate accounting records and how these records can be reconciled with bank and organizational accounting systems. Exposure to realistic digital payment scenarios may also strengthen students' ability to identify transaction errors, recognize fraudulent activities, evaluate payment records, and apply appropriate accounting procedures. However, inadequate access to digital payment platforms, unreliable internet connectivity and electricity, limited practical accounting laboratories, insufficiently trained lecturers, rapidly changing fintech technologies, and cybersecurity concerns may reduce the effectiveness of fintech education. The study therefore expects practical, current, technology-supported, and professionally relevant financial technology education to contribute significantly to improved understanding of digital payment accounting among accounting students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on financial technology education, digital payment accounting, accounting education, fintech, electronic payment systems, digital accounting, accounting information systems, financial technology literacy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, faculties of education and management sciences, accounting departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, financial technology organizations, payment-service providers, curriculum developers, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' digital accounting competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating fintech and digital payment accounting into accounting education curricula, improving access to digital payment simulation platforms, strengthening lecturers' competencies in fintech applications, incorporating practical transaction-reconciliation exercises into accounting courses, promoting university-industry collaboration with fintech organizations, strengthening students' understanding of digital payment controls and security, and preparing accounting education students for Nigeria's increasingly digital financial and accounting environment.
