Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Cryptocurrency Accounting in Nigeria
Abstract
Cryptocurrency has emerged as an important digital financial technology with implications for accounting, financial reporting, taxation, auditing, internal control, and financial management. The growing use of cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based transactions has created a need for accounting professionals and students to understand how cryptocurrency transactions may be identified, measured, recorded, classified, reported, and audited. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited exposure to cryptocurrency accounting concepts, resulting in gaps between conventional accounting knowledge and emerging digital financial practices. Accounting Education provides an opportunity to equip students with relevant knowledge of cryptocurrency transactions and their accounting implications through appropriate curriculum content, classroom instruction, practical examples, case studies, and technology-supported learning activities. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of cryptocurrency accounting in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop knowledge and practical competence through experience, reflection, conceptualization, and application. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how students’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of digital financial technologies may influence their willingness to learn and understand cryptocurrency-related accounting practices. Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of investing in relevant knowledge and skills to improve students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for emerging professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Education may influence students’ knowledge of cryptocurrency accounting. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, cryptocurrency accounting knowledge tests, scenario-based assessment questions, case-study exercises, practical accounting tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to cryptocurrency accounting concepts, classroom coverage of cryptocurrency transactions, cryptocurrency accounting lectures, blockchain-related accounting instruction, cryptocurrency accounting case studies, digital-finance examples, accounting treatment of cryptocurrency transactions, cryptocurrency measurement, cryptocurrency recognition, cryptocurrency classification, cryptocurrency valuation, cryptocurrency disclosure, cryptocurrency financial reporting, cryptocurrency taxation, cryptocurrency auditing, cryptocurrency internal controls, cryptocurrency risk management, cryptocurrency transaction documentation, cryptocurrency record keeping, cryptocurrency accounting standards, regulatory guidance, accounting-software applications, spreadsheet applications, blockchain technology awareness, digital-wallet accounting, cryptocurrency transaction tracking, practical demonstrations, case analysis, problem-solving exercises, group activities, individual assignments, technology-supported learning, lecturer demonstrations, and assessment activities. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of cryptocurrency accounting. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cryptocurrency accounting knowledge scores before and after exposure to structured Accounting Education may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the educational intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Education has a significant positive effect on students’ knowledge of cryptocurrency accounting in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured cryptocurrency accounting instruction are expected to demonstrate greater understanding of cryptocurrency concepts and their accounting implications than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students’ ability to identify cryptocurrency transactions and understand their relevance to accounting practice. Instruction on cryptocurrency recognition may strengthen students’ ability to determine when cryptocurrency-related transactions should be recognized in accounting records. Classification exercises may improve students’ ability to distinguish different types of cryptocurrency holdings and transactions. Measurement and valuation activities may strengthen students’ understanding of appropriate approaches to determining the accounting value of cryptocurrency-related assets and transactions. Journal-entry exercises may improve students’ ability to record cryptocurrency purchases, sales, receipts, payments, exchanges, transfers, and related transaction fees. Ledger-posting exercises may strengthen students’ ability to maintain cryptocurrency-related accounting records. Financial-reporting activities may improve students’ understanding of how cryptocurrency-related information may be presented and disclosed in financial statements. Taxation-related instruction may improve students’ awareness of the potential tax implications associated with cryptocurrency transactions. Auditing activities may strengthen students’ understanding of procedures for verifying cryptocurrency transactions and digital financial records. Internal-control instruction may improve students’ awareness of risks associated with unauthorized transactions, fraud, private-key exposure, digital-wallet access, and cybersecurity. Blockchain-related accounting education may improve students’ understanding of transaction verification, traceability, and digital audit trails. Digital-wallet activities may strengthen students’ ability to understand how cryptocurrency transactions are initiated, received, transferred, and documented. Transaction-tracking exercises may improve students’ ability to follow cryptocurrency movements and compare them with accounting records. Reconciliation activities may strengthen students’ ability to identify differences between cryptocurrency transaction records and accounting records. Case studies may improve students’ ability to apply cryptocurrency accounting concepts to realistic business situations. Practical demonstrations may strengthen students’ understanding of emerging digital financial technologies. Problem-solving exercises may improve students’ ability to address cryptocurrency accounting issues. Group activities may encourage collaborative analysis of cryptocurrency-related accounting problems. Individual assignments may strengthen independent learning and research skills. Technology-supported instruction may improve students’ familiarity with digital financial environments. Lecturer demonstrations may provide practical explanations of complex cryptocurrency accounting concepts. However, the effectiveness of Accounting Education in developing cryptocurrency accounting knowledge may be constrained by limited cryptocurrency-related curriculum content, inadequate lecturer expertise, rapidly changing cryptocurrency technologies, uncertainty surrounding accounting and regulatory treatment, limited access to appropriate digital-finance learning resources, inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to blockchain and cryptocurrency simulation platforms, insufficient practical exercises, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, large class sizes, outdated instructional materials, limited industry collaboration, and students’ exposure to conflicting or inaccurate cryptocurrency information from social media and informal online sources. The study therefore expects current, structured, practical, technology-supported, and appropriately supervised Accounting Education to contribute significantly to improved cryptocurrency accounting knowledge among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating cryptocurrency accounting into Accounting Education curricula, updating accounting courses to reflect emerging digital assets, providing lecturers with relevant professional development, developing practical cryptocurrency accounting case studies, establishing technology-supported learning environments, strengthening students’ understanding of cryptocurrency transaction recording and financial reporting, improving awareness of taxation, auditing, internal controls, and cybersecurity considerations, expanding collaboration between educational institutions and financial-technology organizations, and preparing Accounting Education students for emerging digital accounting practices in Nigeria.
