Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Dividend Decision-Making in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Accounting education provides students with knowledge and skills needed to understand financial management, corporate decision-making, financial reporting, and investment-related activities. Dividend decision-making refers to the process through which a company determines how much of its earnings should be distributed to shareholders and how much should be retained for business operations and future investment. Knowledge of dividend decision-making is important to accounting students because they may be involved in preparing financial information, advising organizations, analyzing corporate performance, and supporting financial decisions in their future careers. However, some students may have inadequate knowledge of the factors and principles involved in making appropriate dividend decisions. This study therefore examines the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of dividend decision-making in Nigerian universities. The study is intended to determine whether accounting education improves students’ understanding of dividend decisions. Accounting education exposes students to concepts such as profit determination, retained earnings, shareholders’ interests, financial management, corporate finance, and financial reporting. Through these areas, students can learn how corporate earnings are managed and how decisions concerning profit distribution and retention may affect business operations. Classroom instruction, practical exercises, financial analysis, case studies, and discussions of corporate financial situations can provide students with opportunities to understand dividend-related decisions. Such learning experiences may help students recognize the importance of balancing shareholders’ expectations with the financial needs of a company. Knowledge of dividend decision-making is important because dividend policies can influence the distribution of corporate earnings, retention of funds for business activities, and the financial interests of shareholders. Students with adequate knowledge of dividend decisions may be better prepared to understand how companies determine appropriate levels of profit distribution and retention. Accounting education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting theoretical concepts in financial accounting, financial management, and corporate finance with practical business situations. The study will therefore assess the extent to which accounting education influences students’ knowledge of dividend decision-making. The study will adopt a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The population will consist of accounting students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their knowledge of dividend decision-making. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established using a suitable reliability technique. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with an appropriate statistical test used to determine the effect of accounting education on students’ knowledge of dividend decision-making. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a positive effect on students’ knowledge of dividend decision-making. Students with stronger exposure to relevant accounting education are expected to demonstrate better understanding of profit distribution, retained earnings, shareholders’ interests, and the factors considered when making dividend decisions. The study may also establish that practical financial analysis and corporate finance exercises improve students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to dividend-related business situations. These expected findings would demonstrate the importance of accounting education in developing students’ knowledge of corporate financial decision-making. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of accounting in universities. Accounting educators could give greater attention to dividend decision-making within relevant courses such as financial accounting, financial management, and corporate finance. Practical exercises involving corporate earnings, retained profits, dividend policies, and financial decision-making scenarios could help students understand how dividend decisions are made in real business situations. Such approaches may strengthen students’ analytical abilities and improve their understanding of the relationship between accounting information and corporate financial decisions. The study will be significant to accounting students, lecturers, university administrators, professional accounting organizations, employers, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may benefit from improved knowledge of dividend decisions and greater preparedness for professional roles involving corporate financial information. Lecturers may use the findings to strengthen practical aspects of accounting instruction, while university administrators may use them to improve accounting education resources and learning activities. Professional accounting organizations and employers may also benefit from graduates who possess stronger foundational knowledge of corporate financial decision-making. The study recommends that Nigerian universities should strengthen the teaching of dividend decision-making within relevant accounting and financial management courses through practical exercises, case studies, financial analysis activities, and corporate decision-making scenarios. Accounting departments should expose students to the principles of profit distribution and retention and their relevance to corporate financial management. Lecturers should also encourage students to analyze realistic corporate situations involving dividend decisions. The study concludes that effective accounting education can significantly improve students’ knowledge of dividend decision-making and better prepare them for professional responsibilities involving corporate financial decisions.
